Episode 93 with Kelly Hrudey of Hockey Night in Canada Nov 12, 2020
    Show notes

Episode 93 of the InGoal Radio Podcast presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports is a treat for every goaltending generation as we spend an hour with 15-year NHL veteran and current Hockey Night in Canada analyst Kelly Hrudey.

In that feature interview presented by Sense Arena, Hrudey shares stories from a career that almost ended as a teenager, including lessons from legendary New York Islanders Billy Smith and Al Arbour, a funny story about his status as the paddle-down pioneer, why he really held his glove so high, and the importance of style, including some of the earliest customized pad designs, that iconic "Hollywood" mask with the Los Angeles Kings, and his real nickname. Hrudey also talks about his relationship with Wayne Gretzky, how motivational speaker Tony Robbins saved his career, and his role now helping others with mental health.

All that, plus another trip to The Hockey Shop for a fresh gear segment that looks at two Warrior chest protector models. Of course, as many already know, we’re now also sharing a video version of our gear segments at The Hockey Shop — think of it as a simulcast like TV and radio broadcasts of an NHL game — to bring you behind the scenes at Goalie Utopia and add visual elements highlighting new features of each piece. InGoal Radio Episode 92 LA Kings Prospect Matt Villalta Nov 06, 2020
    Show notes

Episode 92 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, is live and loaded with great position-specific take aways from Los Angeles Kings goalie Matt Villalta, who is already skating in California with Jonathan Quick, Bill Ranford and AHL goalie coach Matt Millar.

In that feature interview presented by Sense Arena, Villalta shares lessons from his time on the ice with the two-time Stanley Cup winner, including some specific details from Quick that he's working to add to his own game. Coming off his first-year pro, Villalta is open and insightful about the evolution of his own game, all the various tools he's used to keep improving during a now 8-month break between games, including Sense Arena and a few other tools already featured at InGoal, and how something as simple as what you choose to put on your mask can help create the mindset necessary to succeed as a pro.

All that, plus another trip to The Hockey Shop for a fresh gear segment that looks at the new CCM AXIS chest protector, which adds some new layers of protection to their already popular Premier models.

Of course, as some of you may know, we're now also sharing a video version of our gear segments at The Hockey Shop -- think of it as a simulcast like TV and radio broadcasts of an NHL game -- to bring you behind the scenes at Goalie Utopia and add visual elements highlighting new features of each piece. Episode 91 Antoine Bibeau and Sense Arena VR Goaltending Oct 30, 2020
    Show notes

To say Episode 91 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, is packed would be like saying Dominik Hasek was decent at stopping pucks.

This thing is LOADED with goalie greatness: From industry standard-setting mask makers and painters Greg Harrison and David Gunnarsson discussing the ties between Halloween, horror movies, goalie masks and Jacques Plante; to the inventor of Sense Arena, a ground-breaking new virtual reality goalie training program already being adopted by NHL teams and their tendys, to an informative, insightful, and at-times emotional interview with new Carolina Hurricanes free agent addition Antoine Bibeau.

In our feature interview presented by Sense Arena, Bibeau, who was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs, talks about falling for the position cheering Patrick Roy in Colorado and, after getting a call from none other than Roy's former teammate, Joe Sakic, this season to tell him the Avalanche had traded for him, what it was like to get to put on the same uniform. He shares numerous insights on his path to pro, invaluable lessons on the mental and physical game along the way, his own thoughts on Sense Arena, and the emotion of winning his first start with the Avs only to need season-ending hip surgery a short while later — and what the comeback since has been like.

All that, plus another trip to The Hockey Shop for a fresh gear segment that looks at the new Bauer UltraSonic chest protector, which brings their innovative approach from the game-changing pads to goalie arms.

Episode 90 with Cam Talbot and CCM AXIS Masks Oct 22, 2020
    Show notes

Episode 90 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by the Hockey Shop Source for Sports, features new Minnesota Wild goalie Cam Talbot talking about the stress of free agency and his unique late-blooming path to the NHL.

Talbot shares the keys to that rise, which has been anchored by his work in a training center affectionately known as the Dungeon and his offseason coach Patrick Dipronio, and the lessons from playing with Henrik Lundqvist and being coached by Benoit Allaire with the New York Rangers, as well as some of the specific impacts of Dustin Schwartz with the Edmonton Oilers and Jordan Sigalet of the Calgary Flames. He also shares career-altering lessons from his time at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, and how he returned that favour and helped save the NCAA hockey program earlier this summer.

All that, plus a return trip to see another Cam — Matwiv — at The Hockey Shop for a fresh gear segment that looks at the new CCM AXIS mask, and what to make of those innovative new Fluid Inside pods that line the inside.

InGoal Radio Episode 89 with Niklas Rubin and Troy Grosenick Oct 14, 2020
    Show notes

In this week's episode, presented by the Hockey Shop Source for Sports, we chat about the recent free agency period, the goaltender the signings and their potential impact around the league.

We also head (virtually) to Sweden to speak with goaltender Niklas Rubin of the storied Frölunda franchise — whose most famous alumnus goalie is none other than Henrik Lundqvist. We found Rubin, who was leading the Swedish Hockey League at the time of recording with three shutouts in four games for a 0.76 GAA and a .962 SV%, through a newspaper article detailing an unusual on-ice training method he has used since last summer. Beyond innovative training with his goaltending coach Kristoffer Martin we talk about Swedish Hockey, his own development and current game-day routines as well as an interesting look at mental fatigue and his use of breathing exercises in-game to remain sharp. We're sure you'll find a number of great ideas in this interview to bring to your game the next time you step on the ice.

And in our second feature interview we catch up with seven-year veteran Troy Grosenick, who is coming off a .920 season in the AHL, to talk about what it’s like to be a part of this game of goaltending musical chairs after he signed with the Los Angeles Kings, and get some bonus input on the stress of life in the NHL playoff bubble with a baby on the way back home, how posture played a role in his steady rise over the past four seasons, and how this second offseason reminds him of youth hockey as he gets changed in parking lots loaded with NHL players.

In the Gear Segment sponsored by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, Woody and Cam go through the entire line of Bauer Helmets looking at innovations for comfort and protection as well as choosing the right helmet for your game.

    Episode 86 Connor Hellebuyck Sep 23, 2020
    Show notes

Freshly minted Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck is our feature guest for Episode 86 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports. Our exclusive interview with the Winnipeg Jets star was one of the first he’s done since winning the Vezina, and it’s loaded with fascinating stories about his unique path from ignored high school hockey graduate, to the top of the NHL.

Hellebuyck talks about dedicating himself to the position later than most after also playing out until he was 13, and the role a particular set of pads played in that decision to finally just become a goalie. He shares a story about going to stick-and-puck to run drills with a friend to prepare himself for a NAHL camp invite he drove 12 hours to attend, and how that led to a relationship that helped pave his way to pro. He shares insight on his evolution in college, from barely playing to winning the first Mike Richter Award as the top NCAA goalie in just his second season, and his initial hesitation to turn pro after that. He is candid about the changes in his game since joining the Jets, including some early stubbornness and specific examples of post play and hand positioning that he ultimately needed to alter.

It’s a fascinating interview with one of the game’s best, and should serve as both an inspiration and a reminder to young goalies everywhere that where you’re at with hockey in your early teens doesn’t necessarily have to dictate where you end up.

We also head back to The Hockey Shop for our weekly visit with Cam Matwiv, and a detailed conversation about the Bauer Ultrasonic pads that have been incredibly popular with his staff and customers. Cam goes over the innovative new pads and their revolutionary Stabilislide Knee, and shares feedback about fit, flex and feel, as well as some of the custom options he’d recommend to other goalies.

    Episode 85 Evgeni Nabokov Sep 16, 2020
    Show notes

Episode 85 of the InGoal Radio Podcast kicks off with some very exciting news as we welcome back our presenting sponsor, The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, and catch up with good friend Cam Matwiv for the first of what will again be weekly visits to their slice of goalie heaven and a long list of new products we'll be reviewing in-depth, starting this week with CCM AXIS pads.

Our feature guest this week is perfectly timed, as we welcome 14-year NHL veteran Evgeni Nabokov to the show just as Russian goaltenders set an NHL record with three of the four starters in the Conference Finals, and now two in the Stanley Cup Final after Anton Khudobin knocked off the only non-Russian No.1, Vegas starter Robin Lehner. Speaking of Khudobin, he once told us he didn't get formal goalie training until his teens, and it was none other than fellow Kazahkstan-born goalie Nabokov, so who better to talk to about the evolution of the position back in Russia? Nabokov, who is now the San Jose Sharks goaltending coach after a 14-year career spent largely with the Sharks, shares stories about how he came to the position through his father, a long-time pro, the strengths of the Russian system then and now, his path to the NHL, the influence of American coaching icon Warren Strelow, and his own philosophy about the best way to develop goalies. It's a fun half-our conversation loaded with take aways for goalies, goalie coaches and goalies parents alike.

Episode 84 Andrew Allen of the Seattle Kraken Aug 26, 2020
    Show notes

This week’s feature interview for the InGoal Radio Podcast is with recently hired Seattle Kraken pro scout Andrew Allen, but Premium Members can hear the full interview with the former Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabre goaltending coach now. In addition to discussing his new role scouting goalies for the NHL’s newest franchise, Allen shares stories and advice from a career that started at a training camp with Roberto Luongo and the Florida Panthers and included five years in the American Hockey League and ECHL before a transition to coaching that started with Japan’s National Team. Allen touches on experiences and lessons from four seasons as the Blackhawks development coach, including the importance of not making goalies overly dependent on him, as well as from his time working with Carter Hutton, Robin Lehner and last weeks guest, Linus Ullmark, during four seasons with the Sabres. Perhaps best of all, Allen relates those lessons and his experiences and opinions on the ongoing evolution of a position he is so clearly passionate about — you can’t miss it in this interview — back to goalies of all ages and skill levels through his continued work at youth hockey levels and in private camps he runs through Goaltenders by Andrew Allen.
