Living Authentically: Escaping Aesthetic Realism pt. 2 with Donna Lamb May 06, 2026
    Show notes

In part 2, Rachel Bernstein continues her conversation with Donna Lamb, a survivor of the Aesthetic Realism group. Recruited at 20 in New York City, Donna spent 32 years in the group before leaving in her fifties.

She explains how founder Eli Siegel and his successor maintained control through “contempt,” enforced self-criticism, surveillance, and manipulation, including “Respect meetings.” Donna also shares how fear-based indoctrination and pressure to inform on others kept members compliant.

A key focus is the group’s promotion of conversion therapy. Donna recounts being pushed to deny her sexual identity, pursue heterosexual relationships, and conform to rigid beliefs about sexuality. She reflects on her experience through the lens of sexual fluidity and speaks out about the harm and lasting impact of these practices.

This episode explores cult dynamics, coercive control, identity manipulation, and the path to healing.

BONUS PREVIEW: How Cults Recruit and Control May 01, 2026
    Show notes

This is just a preview of our Patreon exclusive Bonus Episode. You can hear the full episode by becoming a member at: https://www.patreon.com/indoctrination

In this Patreon bonus episode, Rachel Bernstein explores “missionary tactics”—recruitment strategies used by high-control groups, including religious, political, wellness, MLM, and online communities. Through the story of “Alex,” the episode shows how seemingly positive outreach can gradually become manipulative.

She breaks down common tactics like love bombing, rapid emotional closeness, gradual commitment, information control, us-versus-them thinking, and leader authority, along with the use of rewards, fear, guilt, and shame. The episode also explains the psychology behind these methods, including the need for belonging, reciprocity, repetition, obedience to authority, and how emotional intensity can reduce critical thinking and create dependency.

Finally, she highlights key red flags—fast, intense connections, pressure to cut ties, early demands for loyalty or money, punishment for questioning, and black-and-white thinking—and offers practical guidance on how to protect yourself, including slowing down, maintaining outside support, and setting boundaries.

PREVIEW: Your Questions Answered: Exclusive Patreon Q&A Apr 30, 2026
    Show notes

This is just a preview of our Patreon exclusive Q&A video. You can access the full content by becoming a member at: https://www.patreon.com/indoctrination

You asked. I answered, and these questions were remarkable.

Every time I read through what this community sends in, I'm genuinely moved by how thoughtfully you're engaging with these topics. This month's Q&A covers some important questions I've received, and I've done my best to answer each one.

In this Patreon Q&A video, we explore:

    • Coercive control and the law — why psychological abuse remains so difficult to prosecute, and what's slowly beginning to shift
    • Love bombing and self-protection — the early relational patterns that signal danger, and one simple but powerful thing you can do to protect yourself
    • Do cult leaders see followers as human? — what the psychology of manipulation actually tells us about how high-control leaders relate to the people around them
    • Self-compassion and therapy after a high-control group — including how to navigate the frustration of feeling like the most informed person in the therapy room
    • Losing your spirituality after a cult — why emotional distance from religion or spirituality can be a healthy and honest response to what you've been through
    • Connecting with other survivors — why it can feel harder than expected, and a reframe that might help
    • Preventing indoctrination at a societal level — the conditions that make people vulnerable, and what meaningful prevention actually looks like

Whether you're in the middle of your own healing, supporting someone you love, or working professionally in this space, I hope this conversation offers something useful and affirming.

Your questions matter. Keep sending them in to indoctrinationshow@gmail.com.

Living Authentically: Escaping Aesthetic Realism pt. 1 with Donna Lamb Apr 29, 2026
    Show notes

In Part 1, IndoctriNation host Rachel Bernstein speaks with Donna Lamb, a cult survivor and writer, about her 32 years inside Aesthetic Realism—a controversial group founded by Eli Siegel and still operating in New York City.

Recruited at age 21 through an acting class, Donna shares how love bombing, intellectualized teachings, and strict control shaped her life inside the group. She reveals the pressure to “change” from being gay, including her experience with conversion therapy—and later being assigned to teach it herself.

As tensions grew around racism, activism, and creative expression, Donna began secretly protesting, writing under pseudonyms, and ultimately made the difficult decision to leave. In this episode, she discusses leaving the group, divorcing her husband, and beginning the process of rebuilding her life after coercive control.

This episode explores cult dynamics, LGBTQ+ conversion practices, psychological manipulation, and the long-term impact of high-control groups.

My Husband, The Rabbit Hole, and Me with Louise Williamson Apr 22, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode, Rachel Bernstein speaks with Louise Williamson about the impact of conspiracy thinking on partners and families. Louise describes noticing her ex-husband’s shift in 2011, with conspiratorial topics becoming obvious by 2014 and escalating into extreme beliefs, worsening further during COVID, as he published anti-vax material and made accusations against her. She recounts social fallout, including friends withdrawing after intense rants, and family effects: a daughter felt conversations became lectures, and a son was exposed to Holocaust-denial claims but was redirected through gentle questioning by teachers and peers. Louise links susceptibility to narcissistic personality style, emphasizes transitional triggers, and recommends critical thinking, watching emotional manipulation, and asking calm questions.

BONUS PREVIEW: Spotting Subtle Manipulation Apr 17, 2026
    Show notes

This is just a preview of our Patreon exclusive Bonus Episode. You can hear the full episode by becoming a member at: https://www.patreon.com/indoctrination

In this Patreon bonus episode, Rachel Bernstein explains how survivors of past coercion can miss quieter, covert manipulation that looks like kindness, concern, or normal persuasion. Rachel contrasts extreme manipulation (overt coercion, isolation, strict control, public shaming, harsh punishments) with subtle tactics that erode self-trust and boundaries incrementally, especially when someone is tired, seeking connection, or conditioned to manage others’ feelings. Signs include soft gaslighting, slow boundary creep, praise followed by control, guilt as leverage, slow isolation, triangulation, conditional kindness, playing the victim, “for your own good” directives, and micro-shaming disguised as jokes. She gives practical steps, including slowing down, using boundary experiments (“I need to think about that”), creating external sounding boards, keeping notes on patterns, and protecting time, finances, health, and privacy.

UNLOCKED BONUS: Synanon’s Dark History Apr 15, 2026
    Show notes

You can hear more episodes by becoming a member at: https://www.patreon.com/indoctrination

In this unlocked Patreon episode, Rachel Bernstein gives an updated intro focusing on Synanon and includes recent news on renewed scrutiny of César Chávez and the United Farm Workers for allegedly adopting Synanon-style practices at the La Paz compound. She covers the UFW’s founding aims and describes reporting that Synanon’s confrontational “Game” was used at La Paz to enforce discipline, discourage dissent, centralize power, and create an insular, coercive culture affecting staff, volunteers, and women residents, even after formal ties waned. The episode then recounts Synanon’s history: founded in 1958 by Charles Dederich, it grew into a wealthy organization using isolation and “attack therapy,” expanded to non-addicts, imposed extreme rules, and escalated into violence, including the rattlesnake attack on an attorney, leading to arrests, loss of tax-exempt status, bankruptcy, and dissolution. Rachel closes the episode by identifying Synanon’s control methods and emphasizing ongoing consent when organizations change.

The Seven Mountains Mandate with Matthew Boedy Apr 08, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode, Rachel Bernstein speaks with Matthew Boedy, who is a professor of rhetoric at the University of North Georgia. He researches and writes about religious rhetoric, particularly in the last few years about the rise of Christian Nationalism. In the interview, Boedy explains rhetoric as framing reality through living language, and describes religious rhetoric as examining powerful “divine terms” like good and evil, including how “evil” has shifted historically from social corruption to vague, dehumanizing group labels. The conversation centers on the Seven Mountains Mandate, a roughly 50-year-old Christian nationalist strategy to “retake” seven cultural institutions (education, government, religion, family, business, media, entertainment) through institutional control rather than mass conversion. They discuss propaganda-like repetition, patriotism as a rhetorical cover, and the need for a broad majority response and more open, less militarized language.

BONUS PREVIEW: Messages of Manipulation: Unpacking Internalized Beliefs Apr 03, 2026
    Show notes

This is just a preview of our Patreon exclusive Bonus Episode. You can hear the full episode by becoming a member at: https://www.patreon.com/indoctrination

In this Patreon bonus episode, Rachel Bernstein explains how people who leave controlling, groups, or manipulative relationships often carry repeated phrases in their minds that become internalized beliefs. Drawing on survivor reports, exit counseling literature, and research on coercive persuasion, she shows that these aren’t random slogans but crafted messages designed to shape identity, distort self-perception and worldview, and increase dependency on a leader, partner, or group. Rachel breaks down several of the most common themes, why they are effective at keeping people compliant or fearful of leaving, and how they can continue to affect someone afterward.

Gaslighting for God with Becky Garrison Apr 01, 2026
    Show notes

In this episode, Rachel Bernstein interviews Becky Garrison, author of "Gaslighting for God," about spiritual narcissism, charismatic leaders, and how abuse is hidden behind a persona with little accountability. Garrison describes her background in religious satire, family alcoholism, and how research into trauma and somatic therapies helped her recognize narcissistic patterns without becoming triggered. They distinguish lying from gaslighting as deliberately altering someone’s perception of reality and discuss DARVO and institutional cover-ups, including examples involving clergy, money, and celebrity wellness figures. Garrison emphasizes prevention through education, following the money, testing groups with “gentle no” boundaries, watching for coercive demands (time, money, access), avoiding parasocial attachments, and finding support communities after leaving toxic leaders or groups.
