Bob Weir + Lucinda Williams + Kenny Roby Live Aug 07, 2020
    Show notes

Lots of new stuff for you today. Hope you enjoy, and have a great weekend!

Bob Weir, Melvin Seals and Mountain Girl on Comes A Time.As I mentioned yesterday, today, in the final days of The Days Between, Oteil and Mike are releasing 3 episodes you can watch or listen to, with 3 fantastic guests. The Bob Weir interview alone will blow your mind. He’s so smart and has so many amazing nuggets of wisdom to share. Watch on video here or listen on audio here.

Lucinda Williams on JamBase Podcast. This new episode of the podcast features Andy Kahn talking to Lucinda about her excellent new album, Good Souls Better Angels, which came out in April. They discussed her songwriting process and how she developed the songs that became the record. They also talked broadly about her work, and about how she’s coping during the pandemic.

Kurtis Blow on Tapes Archive. This new episode features a never before heard interview with the hip-hop pioneer. At the time of this interview in 1997, Blow was 38 years old and was promoting his three-CD compilation, “The History of Rap.” In the interview, Kurtis talks with host Marc Allen about how Don Cornelius, host of Soul Train, broke his heart; what hip-hop fans should go back and listen to; and how he foresaw how big rap music would become. If you don’t know, Kurtis was the first rapper to sign a major record label, and had the first certified gold record rap song for Hip Hop with The Breaks in 1980.

Kenny Roby Interview + Live Song. I got the chance to sit down and talk with singer-songwriter Kenny Roby, who told us about his new album, which comes out today, called The Reservoir. We got into depth about how this album was supposed to be produced by Neal Casal, but after his passing, it was continued with Dave Schools as the producer. Really good conversation, and he played us an acoustic song at the end. You can stream his new album today and order the LP here.

New Oteil Podcast + Festival Circuit Finale + More Aug 06, 2020
    Show notes

We have a lot of exciting announcements for today. Let’s get into it.

    1. Comes A Time Premiere. We’re proud to announce a brand new podcast, called Comes A Time, with Oteil Burbridge and Mike Finoia. As Oteil and Mike say, “In these strange days, when you think it can’t get any weirder, it does.” They’ll be talking to artists, comedians, activists and more to discuss where we are today, and where we go from here. This will be a weekly podcast that will be on video and audio. Today you can listen to their first episode, and tomorrow you’ll be able to watch or listen to episodes with Bob Weir, Melvin Seals and Mountain Girl. They have a bunch of awesome guests coming on in the near future.
    2. Festival Circuit: New Orleans Finale. Today we’re releasing episode 5 of Festival Circuit: New Orleans. In this final episode, we wrap things up by looking at what the future holds for live music and jazz fest, how the music industry needs to change, and we pay tribute to some of the people who made New Orleans music what it is today.
    3. Miles Davis on Late Era.In the second episode of this new show, the guys cover “Doo-Bop,” the last studio album by Miles Davis. It was recorded with hip hop producer Easy Mo Bee and released after he died, on June 30, 1992. The album was received unfavorably by most critics, although it won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance the following year. Reviews included that it “succeeded only in fits and starts,” so Sam, Andy and Winston take a fresh look at this odd album.
    4. Lonely Trip on Helping Friendly Podcast. On this new episode, Brad and I got to record together in person and review Lonely Trip, the 15-song quarantine album that has provided us with a ton of great new music, and a lot to dig into and discuss. We went song by song, discussing the music and lyrics, the influences, and we tell some stories along the way.
    5. Help Save Our Stages. We wanted to help plug the Save Our Stages movement, organized by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA). If you visit their site, you can send pre-filled letters to your representatives and senators about legislation in the House and Senate that would help ensure the survival of live performance venues across the nation.

    Show notes

We have a bunch of new interviews to tell you about, plus an exclusive live track from Allman Betts Band.

    1. Allen Stone on Eric Krasno Plus One. On this new episode of Plus One, Eric talks with soul singer and bandleader Allen Stone. Allen is the son of a preacher, and describes how singing in church from the age of 3 built his musical chops for years before he was exposed to “secular” music. He and Eric touch on Stevie Wonder’s influence, and they also talk about fatherhood, the lifelong search for contentment with the touring life, and what they tell up and coming artists when they’re asked for advice.
    2. Allman Betts Band on Past, Present, Future, Live!On this new episode I got to talk to Devon Allman and Duane Betts of the Allman Betts Band about family history, musical chemistry, and their new record "Bless Your Heart" which comes out on August 28th. They have a really cool story as the children of famous musicians who met more than 30 years ago, and then came back together in 2017 to form this band. The music is great, and you’ll hear a track from them at the end of this intro. As always, they play some exclusive tracks for us. Those are all available on our YouTube page.
    3. Sam Altman on Touchdowns All Day!Jon is back talking with original Disco Biscuits drummer Sam Altman. They talk about their early days playing together, the formation of the band, some tour stories, and lots more.
    4. Vance Powell on Under the Scales. This week, Tom speaks to the multiple grammy-winning producer, engineer and mixer responsible for so much of the great music we all listen to, Vance Powell. Recently having completed co-production of Sigma Oasis, he tells us how he got here and about some of the other fantastic artists who rely upon him to create their own signature sound. He also has worked with artists like Chris Stapleton, Jack White, Sturgill Simpson and many others. And don’t forget to become a Reefer and join Under the Scales Premium!

    Show notes

A few great things to share with you today—enjoy! If you like what you hear, please consider giving us a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

    1. Late Night Jazz Fest on Festival Circuit. We have reached episode 4, where we’re going to go in depth on the late night music scene around the annual jazz festival. We start with the legendary shows on the Riverboat President, and trace that history and those performances to today’s typically-thriving late night scene that spans a lot of the city. We hear from people like Rob Mercurio of Galactic, Robert Walter, George Porter, Jr., Irma Thomas, Papa Mali, and more.
    2. 1996 Rupp Gin on Beyond the Pond.On this episode, Brian and Dave take on the Bathtub Gin from the 11/7/96. A jam that was ahead of its time, and is still one of the most memorable of all time. It was a week after their Remain in Light cover, and you can just start to hear the 1997 sound creeping in. As always, you’ll hear about new music and music inspired by the sound of this jam.
    3. Osirecs: FeelFree! I want to give a shout out to a band that I’ve been listening to for 10 years, FeelFree. This is my brother-in-law’s band, so I’m biased, but they have great songwriting, tight playing, good jams, and awesome horn lines. This is good Summer music, so you should check them out.

    2. Dick’s Picks 11 on 36 From the Vault. In this next episode of the 36 From the Vault Summer Tour, we go to The Stanley Theater in Jersey City, NJ on September 27, 1972. Our first 1972 show in the series – and the first of three from September ‘72 in the larger Dick’s Picks series, this is one of the best full shows we’ve heard thus far. Steven and Rob focus on the impact of Europe and shows like Veneta on the band in 1972, and the transition they were about to go through as they moved into 1973 and 1974, two renowned years in Grateful Dead history.

    Show notes

We have a brand new show to share with you. Please subscribe to Late Era.

And if you love The Drop, give us a review!

    1. Late Era Debut! We’re thrilled to bring you a brand new podcast, Late Era, which will closely examine the under-appreciated and overlooked records from some of the most notable artists of the last sixty years. Hosted by three music critics and musicians, Sam Sodomsky of Pitchfork, Andy Cush of Garcia Peoples and Pitchfork, and Winston Cook-Wilson of Pitchfork. These guys do a great job of exploring these artistic left turns, and look into whether there are things there that we should still appreciate. Episode 1 is about the 2003 Neil Young and Crazy Horse release, Greendale. So this is a Bush-era, 10-song rock opera set in a fictional seaside California town. It’s a weird one, and a perfect album to kick off this series. Please subscribe and leave a review.
    2. Harry Reid on Politics of Truth.Bob Crawford is joined by Bob Costa of the Washington Post and they welcome former US Senator Harry Reid of Nevada. Of course Harry Reid served in the Senate for more than 30 years, and they talk about the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, this summer of protests against racial injustice, seeing Elvis perform in Vegas, The Grateful Dead, and the Democrats’ chances of retaking the Senate in November.

Festival Circuit: New Orleans Ep. 3 — At the Fairgrounds Jul 23, 2020
    Show notes

Today we’re excited to share episode 3 of Festival Circuit: New Orleans. This episode is all about jazz fest. We go back to the beginning of the festival and look at how it started, standout performances, the evolution of the festival itself, and of course, talk a bit about New Orleans food.

We spend some time in the Gospel Tent, party with Mardi Gras Indians, and look at the explosive growth of the festival over the past 20 years. And of course, plenty of music.

This would have been the 51st jazz fest, and we all wish we could have been there. But this tribute to the festival itself helps us all feel a little more connected to the festival.

Here’s the first 10 minutes or so of episode 3. Hope you enjoy. And if you like it, please subscribe and share, and leave a review. Thank you.

Weekend Podcast Listening Recommendations Jul 17, 2020
    Show notes

Today we have a bunch of podcast recommendations for the weekend.

    1. Festival Circuit: New Orleans Episode 2.In this episode, we explore the idea of family in New Orleans, in all the ways that it manifests—the famous musical families of the city, the broader New Orleans musical family, and the idea that the city feels like one big family in many ways. There’s discussion of food, a lot of music, and so much more. We also talk about how the New Orleans family came together around a tragedy, after Hurricane Katrina. We end with talking about this amazing performance from Bruce Springsteen at the 2006 jazz fest, which we’ll pick up in episode 4. Thanks to all interviewees, and to our partners at WWOZ.
    2. David Crosby from 1998 on The Tapes Archive.A never before published interview with David Crosby from 1998, where Croz talks about meeting his son after 30 years, writing and playing music with his son, and a lot more. I’d also like to remind you about Freak Flag Flying, the 5-part series we did with David Crosby earlier this year, which feels like a lifetime ago.
    3. Campaign Songs on Politics of Truth.Bob’s guest this week is Margaret Talev, White House and Politics Editor at Axios and a CNN political analyst. Margaret is also a huge music fan who’s paid close attention to the soundtracks of campaigns for as long as she’s been on the trail. Margaret and Bob discuss which campaigns have harnessed the power of music effectively, and why it’s worked. There’s also the inevitable awkwardness (and occasional lawsuit) when a campaign co-opts the music of a political opponent, as is happening now with the Trump campaign on multiple fronts. And they talk a little politics.
    4. American Aquarium on Southern Songs and Stories. This is the first of a two episode series on BJ Barham of American Aquarium, with in depth conversation with BJ Barham as well as guests Ronda Chollock, a music promoter from Charlottesville, Virginia, and music artist Tyler Boone, who grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, but now calls Hollywood home. They talk about how Barham articulates the dark history of the South so that people will start having conversations about racial and class divides, however uncomfortable those conversations might be. They touch on how bittersweet it must be to have a hit record with no way to play it in person to fans, about how metal and Southern rock have more in common than you might have thought, and working with yet another Grammy-winning producer, Shooter Jennings.
    5. Dani Markham on Past, Present, Future, Live!
