How We Can Put Every Kid through College Sep 23, 2022
    Show notes

What if every baby could receive a college savings account, regardless of the financial situation they’re born into? That’s the mission behind baby bonds, a government policy championed by Senator Cory Booker that would provide children with a nest egg to start off adulthood. Andy speaks with economist Darrick Hamilton, who proposed the policy in 2010 as a mechanism to reduce the racial wealth gap in the United States, and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, who created a program in his city. They explain how baby bonds could eliminate college debt, why we should invest in kids we don’t personally know, and the money and public support it would take to expand local programs to the national level.

Why Student Debt Forgiveness is Good for America Sep 02, 2022

Millions of student loan borrowers breathed a sigh of relief after the White House revealed a plan to wipe clean a huge swath of debt. But how meaningful is this policy, what are the broader implications to the economy, and will it help future borrowers? Harvard Economist Susan Dynarski and the Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Andre Perry break down the plan and use their own experiences to humanize the root problems this relief begins to address. Plus, Andre argues why you will benefit from this policy even if you didn’t personally.
