    Una lezione di Storia dell'Europa registrata nel febbraio 2019 in occasione di Future Digs, progetto nell'ambito di Matera Capitale della Cultura 2019.
    «Quello romano non era un impero europeo: le zone che oggi per noi sono il cuore dell’Occidente, lungo il Reno e il Danubio, non erano per i cittadini di Roma che un’estrema periferia affacciata sul barbaricum. Un secolo e mezzo dopo, la vittoria di Carlo Martello a Poitiers mette fine all’espansione araba ed è celebrata da un cronista del tempo come una vittoria degli “europenses”; e il nipote di Carlo Martello, Carlo Magno, sarà acclamato come il “Re Padre dell’Europa”. Le province perdute dell’Impero, asservite dai barbari, avevano strutturato una propria forte identità e presto sarebbero partite alla conquista del mondo. “Quindi – conclude Barbero – i discendenti di quei barbari che hanno combattuto queste due battaglie siamo noi europei»

    «Per secoli le donne non hanno avuto voce in pubblico, a meno che non fossero regine. Nel Medioevo poche ragazze ebbero la forza di costringere una società maschilista ad ascoltarle e a lasciarle libere di vivere come volevano, e spesso pagarono per questo un prezzo altissimo. Caterina da Siena sentiva la voce di Dio, e voleva gridare agli altri ciò che Dio le dettava. Figlia di un artigiano con una famiglia numerosa, già da ragazzina costrinse il padre a darle una stanza tutta per sé, per essere libera di vegliare, pregare e fare penitenza. Col tempo arrivò a farsi ascoltare dal papa e dai cardinali, a cui scriveva durissime lettere di rimprovero; e i capi della Chiesa chinavano la testa davanti a questa ragazza che morirà ad appena trentatré anni, distrutta dai digiuni.»

    «Le due flotte che si affrontarono a Lepanto erano il prodotto di una tecnologia affinata nel corso dei secoli e di colossali investimenti da parte dei tre imperi, l’ottomano, il veneziano e lo spagnolo, che insieme governavano tutto il mondo mediterraneo. La costruzione delle 400 galere fu possibile solo grazie all’esistenza di impianti industriali all’avanguardia come gli arsenali di Venezia e di Istanbul, e allo sfruttamento spietato di risorse forestali in via di esaurimento; i governi dovettero ricorrere a mezzi estremi per reclutare i 60.000 rematori necessari. Eppure, quando le due flotte si incontrarono era praticamente certo che una delle due sarebbe stata cancellata in poche ore…»

    «Alla vigilia dei 150 anni dell’Unità, il racconto storico e la visione dell’Italia che ebbero Cavour, Vittorio Emanuele II e Garibaldi. Cavour, nato suddito di Napoleone per tutta la vita parlò e scrisse in francese meglio che in italiano. Carlo Alberto lo considerava “un carbonaro impertinente”. Sosteneva che l’Italia nata dal Risorgimento doveva incarnare i grandi principi della Rivoluzione francese e che gli operai dovevano essere pagati meglio “per prevenire il socialismo”. Primo ministro per nove anni, terrorizzò i possidenti aumentando le imposte e investì per modernizzare il paese: durante il suo governo triplicò il PIL, creò dal nulla strade, ferrovie, canali e banche. Preparò l’unica delle Guerre d’Indipendenza che l’Italia sia riuscita a vincere.»
