    Water & SDGs - Downscaling WATer relevant SDGs (DWAT-SDGs) Mar 20, 2023
    Show notes

POLICY SEMINAR Water & SDGs - Downscaling WATer relevant SDGs (DWAT-SDGs) 2023 UN Water Conference Side Event Jointly organized with the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) MAR 20, 2023 - 10:00 TO 11:00AM EDT Localizing and realizing SDGs will require deep transformations in every country and region, including contextualizing toward a locally relevant subset of goals. Localization is essential due to the diversity of local conditions and priorities across regions in both the developed and developing world, local disagreements over priorities, competing interests, trade-offs, and synergies among multiple sectors and stakeholders, and country- and region-specific risks posed by future uncertainties. However, current SDG localization efforts are hampered by lack of appropriate institutional support (especially the participation of local communities), future uncertainties and risk, limited interactions between science and practice communities, and limited communication among countries and regions. To support localizing SDGs, the International Water Resources Association is increasing support to SDG implementation through a task force committee (TFC) on Water & SDGs. The overall goal of the TFC is to downscale WATer-relevant SDGs (DWAT-SDGs) to the country/region, basin, and local scales to facilitate SDG realization and support sustainable management of water resources in a climate crisis. This session will allow member countries to exchange existing tools and case studies linked to SDG 6 implementation and will develop suggestions and partnerships for expanding SDG 6 localization, making an important contribution to the Water Action Agenda. Food Loss and Waste in Fruit and Vegetable Supply Chains Mar 13, 2023
    Show notes

POLICY SEMINAR Food Loss and Waste in Fruit and Vegetable Supply Chains Co-organized by IFPRI, Embassy of Denmark, and World Resources Institute MAR 14, 2023 - 9:30 TO 11:00AM EDT According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about one-third of all food produced around the globe is lost or wasted. This is particularly egregious in a world where one in nine persons is food insecure, and widespread food affordability concerns in low- and middle-income countries have resulted from COVID-related value chain disruptions and the global impact of the war in Ukraine. This annual event will take stock of efforts around the world to tackle food loss and waste through initiatives like Champions 12.3, a coalition of leaders from governments, businesses, international organizations, research institutions, farmer groups, and civil society dedicated to inspiring ambition, mobilizing action, and accelerating progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3 by 2030. The seminar will also take a closer look at fruits and vegetables, which are among the healthiest but most wasted foods. Given their perishable nature, great care, attention, and cooperation along all parts of fruit and vegetable value chains are required to reduce food loss and waste. Welcome Rob Vos, Director, Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, IFPRI, and Lead, CGIAR Initiative on Rethinking Food Markets Jacob Jensen, Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries of Denmark Keynote Address Maximo Torero, Chief Economist, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Panel Discussion Rob Vos, Director, Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, IFPRI, and Lead, CGIAR Initiative on Rethinking Food Markets Muhammad Yakubu Bubayaro, Founder/CEO, Bunkasa Agritech Shannon Sajdak, Senior Sustainability Manager, Apeel Signe Frese, Director, CSR and Quality, Coop Denmark Closing Remarks Liz Goodwin, Senior Fellow and Director, Food Loss and Waste, World Resources Institute (WRI) Moderator Luciana Delgado, Senior Research Analyst, IFPRI More about this seminar: https://www.ifpri.org/event/food-loss-and-waste-fruit-and-vegetable-supply-chains Subscribe IFPRI Insights newsletter and event announcements at www.ifpri.org/content/newsletter-subscription

Harmful Environmental Impacts of Agricultural Subsidies Dec 14, 2022
    Show notes

POLICY SEMINAR Harmful Environmental Impacts of Agricultural Subsidies Co-organized by IFPRI and The University of Adelaide DEC 14, 2022 - 3:00 TO 4:30PM EST Agricultural subsidies are high—and increasing—and are largely concentrated among relatively few commodities in a handful of countries. The negative impacts of these subsidies on production and trade are widely known, but their environmental impacts are less well understood. In a recent review of the literature on agricultural subsidies, the Institute for International Trade identified key areas where further analysis is needed to strengthen the evidence base for subsidy reform. The study confirmed that many subsidies rely on environmentally harmful policy instruments, with few constraints on these expenditures. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has analyzed the impacts of removing agricultural support on various indicators measuring food security, nutrition, and climate outcomes, finding that removing support may have important adverse trade-offs. This seminar will discuss the harmful environmental impacts of agricultural subsidies and how repurposing them could lead to policies that work better for people and the planet. Welcoming Remarks Rob Vos, Director of Markets, Trade and Institutions Division, IFPRI Keynote Address Ken Ash, Visiting Fellow, Institute for International Trade (IIT), The University of Adelaide David Laborde, Senior Research Fellow, IFPRI Discussants Lee Ann Jackson, Head of Division, Agro-food Trade and Markets, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Sophia Murphy, Executive Director, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) Joseph Glauber, Senior Research Fellow, IFPRI Nelson Illescas, Director, INAI Foundation (Fundación INAI) Closing Remarks Peter Draper, Executive Director, Institute for International Trade, The University of Adelaide Moderator Valeria Piñeiro, Acting Head of the Latin American region & Senior Research Coordinator, IFPRI More about this seminar: https://www.ifpri.org/event/harmful-environmental-impacts-agricultural-subsidies Subscribe IFPRI Insights newsletter and event announcements at www.ifpri.org/content/newsletter-subscription

Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Intensive Farming Systems Dec 06, 2022
    Show notes

Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Intensive Farming Systems: Results from an ETH Zürich-IFPRI Collaborative study Co-organized by IFPRI, ETH Zürich, and Bayer DEC 6, 2022 - 10:00 TO 11:30AM EST The growth of our global food production capacity over the past century is unprecedented, and has been facilitated by advances in crop breeding, mechanization, intensification, and the application of chemical inputs. This has come at a cost in terms of biodiversity loss and land degradation. This apparent trade-off between productivity and environment can be resolved through adoption of new farming practices that emphasize restoring and maintaining biodiversity on agricultural land to the benefit of soils and crops. The science underpinning such practices is still being developed and trialed, but we know enough to propose alternative management principles. Similarly, farmers have long been experimenting and adapting their farming systems, sometimes drawing on scientific outputs, but more often than not drawing on their own experiential learning and knowledge exchange across farmer networks. In recognition of the developing science coupled with the growing interest of farmers in exploring new approaches to enhance farm resilience, ETH Zurich and IFPRI are pleased to share their research findings undertaken as part of the Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Crop Production project, supported by Bayer. Over the course 2021-2022, ETH Zurich and IFPRI, together with partners in Germany, France, Brazil, and the USA, conducted systematic reviews of the scientific literature, complemented with interviews with farmers in each country, to evaluate management options for enhancing biodiversity and resilience in crop production. A panel composed of farmers, researchers, government and private sector actors will then comment on these research findings through the lens of farm management realities, and offer their perspectives on how to advance this area of research and how to achieve greater coherence of multiple policies, programs, and efforts.
