ARTICLE FROM VULTURE.COM ON SCOTT ADKINS
Familiarity is more of a feature than a bug for Netflix, so it's not surprising that Day Shift, which topped the streaming service's charts after its August 12 release, is a lot like other movies you might have already seen. It's about a Black vampire hunter named Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) who's human, but his gruffness and gifts for hand-to-hand conflict mean he comes across as Blade's down-on-his-luck SoCal cousin. Bud has a complicated history with the vampire-hunters union, the headquarters of which is a strip-mall answer to the hotel in the John Wicks, with its rules, bureaucracy, and fondness for retro technology. The antagonist he faces down, Audrey (Karla Souza), is overseeing a luxury development in the San Fernando Valley, bent on vampire rule via gentrification - a plan shared by the undead villains in Netflix's own 2020 Vampires vs. the Bronx. But there is an element that distinguishes Day Shift from any offering of the week, which is that it features a few genuinely pleasurable fight sequences. Some feature contortionists in ghoulish makeup who bend their limbs in eye-watering ways. The best involve Scott Adkins, a Birmingham-born martial artist and actor whose presence in Day Shift serves as an action shibboleth, a nod to the fact that first-time director J.J. Perry is a working stunt coordinator himself.
Adkins is not famous, not in the way that his scene partner Steve Howey might be considered to be after long stints on Reba and Shameless. His most visible role to date is one most people didn't even know he played, taking over for Ryan Reynolds in the final act of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to play a not-quite-Deadpool with prosthetics over his face to make it look like his mouth was sewn shut. But he and Howey, cast as renowned vampire-hunting Armenian brothers who disguise themselves as stereo repairmen, roll up in Day Shift in the kind of entrance that suggests the audience is familiar with the actors being introduced. And a certain kind of geek absolutely will be. While Adkins has been inching toward the mainstream - he'll play a role in the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 - the fandom he's built up so far has come from his work in Asia and a slew of effective, bruising features that have mostly bypassed theaters. He's a deity of the direct-to-video realm, proving again and again that you don't need big budgets or a few hundred overworked VFX artists at your beck and call when you're capable of providing the spectacle yourself.
Adkins isn't a bad actor, though it's his astonishing physical prowess that sets him apart. In 2006'sUndisputed 2: Last Man Standing, he does a somersaulting kick into a flying roundhouse, flat-out video-game sh*t that director Isaac Florentine captures in full and in slow motion so you can appreciate that it's being done in real life. Adkins is best at rough-and-tumble antiheroes and charismatic villains - he's incapable of playing a character who has not at some point in his life snapped someone's arm in two. He was the antagonist in Undisputed 2, his breakthrough, a sequel to the 2002 Wesley Snipes boxing movie that featured none of the original cast and that was improbably great anyway. Michael Jai White was the star, but Adkins stole the show, and subsequent sequels followed his character, a sadistic MMA specialist named Yuri Boyka whose dominance in the prison's underground fight scene has secured him a measure of status behind bars, on a bloody quest for redemption and meaning.
Adkins has made eight movies with Florentine and seven with another direct-to-video martial-arts specialist - Jesse V. Johnson, a fellow Brit whose collaborations with Adkins have a low-rent bluntness that's impossible to dislike. Johnson cast Adkins as a down-on-his-luck dojo owner who takes on a job enforcing loans for a mob boss in 2018's The Debt Collector, an excuse for a half-dozen comedic skirmishes with bodyguards and one good enough to fuel a sequel two years later. But it's the 2019 Avengement (a real word, even if it doesn't sound like one) that's Johnson's magnum opus, with Adkins playing a character out for revenge against the gangster brother who betrayed him, weathering countless prison beatings in flashbacks that seem to just burnish his brutal patina. Johnson, like J.J. Perry, has a background in stunt work, a career path that isn't new but that's led to some of the more satisfying action set pieces in recent years - and not just in the direct-to-video market.
Perry did stunts on the first two John Wick films, which came from stuntmen turned bigshot Hollywood filmmakers David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. Netflix's previous gritty action hit Extraction was the directorial debut of stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, who in addition to Marvel movies worked on Leitch's Atomic Blonde and the aforementioned, misbegotten X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Stunt work is obviously a small world, but there's a reliable tangibility to the fight scenes in these movies that's often missing in bigger blockbusters, where everything has become possible and very little of it looks real. In Day Shift, Adkins and Howey join Jamie Foxx and Dave Franco to invade a suburban house that turns out to be home to a vampire hive. While Foxx shoots up bloodsuckers exploding out of the drywall, Adkins stakes vamps in the kitchen, beheads them with a sword, and fences with a bendy lady who wields knives with her feet. Then, in a move that is pure, joyous excess, he reveals blades hidden in his boots and does a twirling kick through the air for no other reason than that it looks cool. It turns out, there's still value to that - to not just being an actor who trains enough to be able to navigate fight scenes with the help of doubles and camera angles, but to be a performer who's able to do something that seems impossible, and who can also act.

Paul Sexton, Author of Charlie's Good Tonight Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

    ABOUT CHARLIE'S GOOD TONIGHT
The fully authorized and official biography of legendary Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, one of the world's most revered and celebrated musicians of the last half century. British journalist Paul Sexton-who has covered the band for more than thirty years-has been authorized to write Watts' biography by his family, who have maintained a low-profile dignity both before and since the drummer's death. The welcome result is CHARLIE'S GOOD TONIGHT: The Life, the Times, and the Rolling Stones: The Authorized Biography of Charlie Watts (Harper; October 11, 2022; $27.99), a frank, affectionate portrait of an iconic musician and singular man. The book also has the approval of the Rolling Stones themselves, with forewords by both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
"Watts was the proof that not all rock stars are created equal, and that clichés are there to be avoided. Such as the one that, in his mind, he was a rock star at all," Sexton writes. "He was the global celebrity who hated attention and once said that he preferred the company of dogs to humans; the car enthusiast who didn't drive; the horseman who didn't ride; the man of wealth and taste who grew up in a prefab; the drummer who toured the world for five and a half decades and spent all of them yearning to be home. The jobbing musician who thought the Stones would be finished in a year and ended up as their pilot light with a whole-life tariff. If you made him up, you would find few believers."
Drawing on exclusive interviews with bandmates and fellow musicians, with family and myriad friends from childhood through his late life, Sexton gives the full measure of the man. From working class beginnings during World War II to the Swinging Sixties when he was recruited for the Stones months after their formation, through the celebrity and debauchery of the 1970s and 80s, weathering band bust-ups and battles with personal demons, Watts remained remarkably even keeled. With roots in jazz, he openly admitted that the Rolling Stones' music was not really his cup of tea, but faithfully kept the steady beat of the band for almost sixty years.
While it offers new glimpses behind the scenes, CHARLIE'S GOOD TONIGHT is not a retread of the legend that is the greatest rock 'n roll band in history, says Sexton. It is a portrayal of the life and times of a "someone whose like we won't see again, who almost seemed to belong in another epoch altogether: a man out of time, but always perfectly in time.
The biography not only draws extensively on Sexton's huge archive with the Stones, but contains countless fresh interviews, including new reflections by Jagger, Richards and Ronnie Wood; Watts' daughter Seraphina, sister Linda and granddaughter Charlotte; former bandmate Bill Wyman; engineer and confidant Glyn Johns; and many more.

Tara Lipinski, Olympic gold medalist - New Show Wedding Talk, Premiering OCTOBER 13th Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

Tara Lipinski, the internationally acclaimed figure skater who won over the world's hearts when she earned the gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics - earning her the distinction as the youngest individual gold medalist ever in Winter Games history - has applied the same grace, finesse and assiduous character as a role model to empower a whole generation of young girls to achieve any goal they set their minds to. Tara was also recognized as the youngest ever World Figure Skating Champion and United States Champion. In the time since her Olympic triumph, Lipinski has taken the same championship-style approach to her roles as a TV sports commentator for NBC, NBC Sports and Universal Sports, an actress, a philanthropist and more. In following her love for performance as a popular professional ice skater into these new high-profile jobs, it is clear Lipinski was born to be a performer both on the ice and on the screen.
Today, Tara is NBC's prime time figure skating TV Analyst, covering events like the World Figure Skating Championships, the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series, the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships and the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. After her huge success at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, with NBC Sports, she was promoted to the NBC prime time team for the 2018 Olympic Games in South Korea. Aside from figure skating, NBC has enlisted Tara for its live event coverage of the Kentucky Derby, Super Bowl XLIX and 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Previous to her role at NBC, Tara attended Olympic Games where she worked with many of the world's top media outlets and partnered with sponsors, further burnishing her global stature as an iconic Olympian of accomplishment and inspiration.
The strength of character, determination, expertise and Tara's infectious joie de vivre that has become her enduring brand can be seen in the golden moments of her winning Olympic performance, yet were instilled at an early age. It all began when as a three-year-old in Sewell, New Jersey, she started roller skating, and went on at age nine to win the primary girls freestyle title at United States Roller Skating Championships.
At 13 years old, Lipinski went on to become the first female skater to land a triple loop/triple loop jump combination - a signature element of her performances. On reaching the amateur pinnacle of her sport with her Olympic achievements, Tara turned professional and proved her public appeal has a strong audience draw on such events as Stars on Ice, Champions on Ice and Ice Wars. She co-headlined with Scott Hamilton and Kristi Yamaguchi on the Stars on Ice tour and starred in the Pro Team competition Ice Wars that aired on CBS prime time.
A deal with CBS Television resulted in her own primetime special, Tara Lipinski: From This Moment On, and led to dozens of cameo TV appearances and acting roles on such primetime series as Kidding, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Malcolm in the Middle, Veronica's Closet, 7th Heaven, and The Young and the Restless, among others.
Tara also authored two bestselling books entitled Triumph on Ice and Totally Tara.
Lipinski currently divides her time between Los Angeles and New York as well as the house she helped design on the South Carolina coast when she has time to get away from her busy career.

David Pasqualone - Growing a business (sales and marketing focus) Oct 07, 2022
    Show notes

Raised by a single mother in the late 1970’s after being abandoned by his father at birth, David lived in a dilapidated house with 6’ high ceilings that leaked when it rained for the first 20 years of his life. Scarred from watching his grandmother suffer while slowly and painfully dying from cancer, living in fear for his life at times due to insane family members threatening him (that were already convicted of murdering his great aunt), and the recipient of multiple other constant childhood traumas, David Pasqualone started life confused, scared, and feeling alone.
He was regularly told by those around him that he was lazy, undisciplined, and useless. Constantly ill as a child and teenager, doctors labeled him as a hypochondriac as he got sicker and sicker over the years. Sent to psychologists instead of diagnostic testing, he was told he was a waste of life constantly by many of those around him. Despite this, David stayed respectful to his elders, but never accepted the lies he was being told about himself.
Once he turned 18, he demanded medical tests and two weeks before his high school graduation, they revealed he had a tumor in his head the size of an orange that was slowly killing him. After two major surgeries, intense radiation therapy, and months stuck at home, David was dying at 19 years old. Even though doctors gave him little hope of survival, David chose to try a holistic approach to healing over more surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy. He not only survived, but thrived physically.
The story continues with this young man, who thought he was intellectually a step above Forrest Gump and a functional idiot, finishing college, getting married, thriving in business, and raising a beautiful family. Only to get critically ill again and suffer for 5 years in intense pain after a simple dental visit goes horribly wrong.
Told by multiple physicians to get his affairs in order and prepare for death, David refused to accept this path. Becoming his own medical advisor, David did basically everything opposite of what the doctors told him. He did his best in life each day to heal, but learned to trust God for the results. This phase of his journey brought him into wellness and strength. He got off all of the antidepressants and painkillers the doctors tried to medicate his symptoms with, and once again began to thrive physically.
In 2014 his personal life took a drastic turn when his wife of 14 years derailed and their marriage turned into a long, terrible episode of the Jerry Springer show mixed with the Twilight Zone and the Good Son movie. It was a real-life nightmare.
Fighting to save his marriage, protect his children, and not die from the stress, David spent 6 hard years trying to “fix things” before he learned to accept the reality of what he was facing, make the tough decisions, and move on with life. So he and his children could not only heal from the trauma and PTSD of the hand they were dealt, but fully heal, thrive, and live with joy once again.
David’s life has been full of intense challenges in every area: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, familial, relational, social, and financial. Through this all he has learned that despite our circumstances and personal perspective, God is there for us, loves us, has a bigger plan than we can imagine. And most importantly, if we don’t quit and stay steadfast on our course, we’ll always win and benefit from even the most hideous experiences and hardships.
So while David Pasqualone may have started out life confused, scared, and feeling alone, he now lives life with a passionate purpose, complete confidence, and is surrounded by those he loves. Each day David’s mission is to help people know God, be encouraged into action, find their purpose, live it passionately, and fulfill it steadfastly until their race is over. And with God, nothing is impossible; we cannot fail!

Tamera Mowry-Housley - Author of Memoir You Should Sit Down For This: A Memoir about Life, Wine + Cookies Oct 06, 2022

ABOUT TAMERA MOWRY-HOUSLEY, AND YOU SHOULD SIT DOWN FOR THIS
Early in her debut memoir, YOU SHOULD SIT DOWN FOR THIS: A Memoir about Life, Wine, + Cookies (Legacy Lit, 10/4/22), author Tamera Mowry-Housley invites readers to imagine themselves popping over to her Napa Valley home, sitting down in her kitchen after a welcoming hug, surrounded by the smell of freshly baked cookies and having a cup of tea. And that's precisely what reading You Should Sit Down for This feels like: catching up with an old friend over a lovely Earl Grey and too many cookies!
Tamera Mowry-Housley broke onto the scene as the beloved TV star-one half of the memorable duo on the hit show Sister, Sister, and co-host of the FOX talk show The Real. Tamera's spunky Sister, Sister character stole the hearts of millions; however, the transition in the public eye from a teenage star to a grown woman with a family and thriving career wasn't easy. Being raised in Hawaii as an army brat instilled in her the discipline needed to succeed and conquer her dreams, but she felt secluded and sheltered and wondered if living on her terms would ever be her reality. Then, through gumption and grit, she decided it would. By harnessing her inner strength, Tamera stopped letting other people define her, tapped into her faith, and tossed away negativity to hone her own happiness and create a unique path forward for herself. She imparts her brand of wisdom-her Tameraisms-throughout the book and encourages readers to learn from her journey.
In You Should Sit Down for This, Tamera opens up about:
    ● exiling herself from the world of beauty pageants
    ● the pressures of being a teenage star
    ● her struggle with rejection
    ● the craziness of dating later in life
    ● the challenges of balancing family and career
    ● why it's okay for women to hide out in their closets when they just need a few minutes of peace. and much more!
In You Should Sit Down for This, Tamera is the fun-loving, wisdom-sharing girlfriend we all need in our lives-one who is always ready to top off your wine! A must-read for Tamera's millions of fans, whether they grew up watching her on Sister Sister and Tia & Tamera, or fell in love with her on The Real, the book is a lighthearted and delightful glimpse into the life of a much-loved actor. Tamera will leave readers feeling liberated and motivated to embrace the highs and lows of growing up in a book that celebrates cookies and the juicy parts of life. You Should Sit Down for This is a much-needed reminder of the magic that can happen when we open our minds and hearts to become the best versions of ourselves.

Former Obama speechwriter Cody Keenan, author of Grace: President Obama and Ten Days in the Battle for America Oct 06, 2022
    Show notes

    ABOUT CODY KEENAN AND GRACE
GRACE: PRESIDENT OBAMA AND TEN DAYS IN THE BATTLE FOR AMERICA (Mariner Books, October 4, 2022) is the riveting story of the most exhilarating and emotional stretch of the Obama presidency, told by the man Obama calls his "Hemingway," his longtime collaborator and chief speechwriter, Cody Keenan.
GRACE is a spellbinding account of the ten most dramatic days of the Obama presidency, when a hate-fueled massacre and looming Supreme Court decisions (the right to health care for working families and the right for same-sex couples to marry) put the character of our country on the line. Cody Keenan takes the readers deep inside the White House to offer the most intimate glimpse into process, procrastination, and crafting speeches at the highest level with Barack Obama, including:
    · What happens inside the West Wing after a mass shooting, from someone who's written more eulogies after such tragedies than anyone else on the planet
    · Heated Oval Office debates over how and whether to speak that week at all
    · A late-night writing session in the First Family's private residence
    · Obama's innermost thoughts on race and his use that week of the one word you can't say
    · And the moment on Marine One when Obama decided to take a leap of faith in a soaring sermon and surprise everybody by leading the country in a chorus of "Amazing Grace."
In the rarest of White House memoirs, Keenan masterfully narrates the propulsive story of those ten days and offers an intimate look at where we've been and where we can go on our American journey toward progress and hope.
