Hype 'Merlin' Special #1: The Adventure Begins... Jan 25, 2018

Show notes

The first episode of our Merlin rewatch is finally here by popular demand! Join the ladies of Hype Podcast as we take a deep dive into Merlin’s memorable pilot, “The Dragon’s Call.”

Welcome to the first episode of our Merlin rewatch! If you’ve been following along on our weekly regular show, you’ll know taking a deep dive into BBC’s beloved Arthurian Legend series (just like we’ve done with Gilmore Girls and The 100 is something we’ve been wanting to do for awhile.

As with our past rewatch specials, we want to remind you that despite the fact that Selina and Pam have both already seen the series in full, all of our episodes will be spoiler free! That means if you’re watching along for the first time with us, we we won’t be discussing anything that happens past the episode(s) we’re highlighting in each installment of our Merlin rewatch series.

For our first Merlin special, Pam and Selina take a deep dive into the series’ pilot, “The Dragon’s Call!”

SHOW NOTES

We kick things off by explaining how this rewatch will work— it’s a bit different than the ones we’ve done in the past!
Selina and Pam share their Merlin origin stories and reminisce on the first time they watched the series
We talk about the key players we’re introduced to in the pilot, which include Merlin, Arthur, Gwen, Morgana, Gaius, and Uther.
Merlin’s magic is a source of much discussion, as is why Hunith thought to send her son to the one place he’s most in danger.
We also discuss Merlin and Arthur’s iconic first (and second!) meeting in Camelot!
Do we trust the dragon and his ominous talk of destiny? Do we trust Uther and his harsh stance on magic?
Gwen and Merlin: we ship it— don’t @ us!
Why did Merlin save Arthur? WAs it free will or destiny?
We wrap things up by sharing some of our favorites from the episode, including favorite scene and favorite line!
Selina also hits us with some fun facts about the episode!
Finally, we read your thoughts in our listener feedback section!

In our next installment of our Merlin rewatch, Selina and Pam will be discussing season 1, episodes 2 and 3. If you have any thoughts about our pilot discussion, or on the next two episodes of the series, be sure to send them our way!
