    Show notes

In this episode, Mark and Jonathan get a chance to have additional time conversing with Nick of the Woods, who we spoke to in episode 13, our cold weather episode. Nick, an outdoors guide and educator, tells us about how he got into the woods, and why it means so much to him to introduce the rest of us to the skills necessary to learn to love them the way he does. After that, a quick conversation about keeping water clean finishes up the chat. Finally, Jonathan and Mark then have a quick conversation about how a camp location can affect your comfort.

    Episode 29 – Live From Hangcon 2018 Feb 05, 2018
    Show notes

This month, Mark and Jonathan travel to Ocala National Forest in Florida for the Hangcon 2018 group hang. We did a live recording of the episode this month, chatting about the future of hammock camping with a couple of folks you might recall: Gresh and Spiguyver, as well as a new guest: Tripsmith. After our initial conversation, we chat with everyone about what they’d like to see in the future, and then finally the stuff they do/don’t take with them on a backpacking or camping trip. While a little bit colder than expected, it was a great podcast recording and tons of fun meeting folks there who have listened to our podcast in the past. Thanks so much to the organizers of the group hang, Gumbo and Timberr, who put so much effort into making this a great experience for everyone.

    Episode 28 – Adventure with a mission! Jan 08, 2018
    Show notes

This month’s episode brings us an interview with the founders of Sierra Madre Research, a hammock design company with some interesting designs for their hammocks. Richard and Juli Rhett tell Mark and Jonathan about their company, some of their interesting designs, and how they got into hammock camping as an avocation and an important part of their personal mission – helping others get access to clean water. Finally, we get to learn a little bit about what happened to get Juli and Richard onto the set of Shark Tank.

After the interview, Jonathan and Mark discuss the possibility that social media may be driving the overuse of our trails, and stand on a soapbox about LNT. Sorry about that, listeners….

Episode 27 – Engineered for the Outdoors Dec 04, 2017
    Show notes

In this episode, Mark and Jonathan have a great conversation with Caleb Lystrup, one of the co-founders of Khione Outdoor Gear, a Utah-based startup and recent kickstarter success story. Caleb and his partner Casey Messick, both graduate students at BYU, discovered their love of hiking together and had an inspiration for a “new” type of hammock shelter, an all-in-one that they have called the “SHEL”. We chat about Casey’s development of their product, his experience in testing and perfecting the system (due out in January), and some ideas for cheap backpacking products.

After the interview, Jonathan and Mark discuss trying to sleep in the noisy woods and not being too freaked out by animals, and then try to figure out why foxes like sneakers.

We chat about how they converted, why they hammock camp, and how they fit it into their regular program. It’s obvious to these Scouts that hanging is the only way to camp!

After talking to the Scouts, Mark and Jonathan discuss their suspension, and the many choices available to hangers in today’s market.

Finally, Jonathan reviews a new product to the market in a kickstarter, the Ultimate Hammock, while talking to its creator.

    Episode 25 – Plenty of Room Oct 02, 2017
    Show notes

This month’s episode includes a great conversation between Mark, Jonathan, and Marc Bohmann from Teton Hammocks, an up-and-coming cottage manufacturer of hammocks and hammock supplies. We answer the question, is there still room in the market for a new entrant in the hammocks game, and if so what kind of business do they need to be? After a lively discussion about engineering for sideways rain, we finish up with a chat about winter foods for camping and backpacking.

Mark and Jonathan revisit an old story – site selection. With more news articles about folks being hurt by choosing rotten trees, it’s important to remember to pay attention to the trees that we connect to for camping.

Finally, we know you’ve all been waiting for a review of the Chameleon, and we have it for you. Jonathan and Mark talk about their experiences with the new Chameleon from Dutchware.

Starting camping as a teenager, a college friend introduced him to hammock camping, and the rest is a history that you get to hear about in this month’s podcast.
