You'll be hearing more from her new album in the coming weeks. You'll also hear more from Submotion Orchestra this week, along with a bunch of new releases to kick off the year.

    What’s Happening At Dave’s Lounge Jan 21, 2015
    Show notes

What's this? Oh, y'know, just a viral video sensation hanging out with a podcaster and his future wife. (And guess which one of them forgot to turn the flash on?)

    Dave, Kawehi, and Melissa

I had the opportunity to see Kawehi perform live in Raleigh last Saturday. The energy she puts into her performance is just tons of fun to watch. Also, her Ableton Live skills make me feel like a caveman rubbing two sticks together while she's cooking with gas. I've got a long way to go.

I've captured some video from her Raleigh show here:

Check out her tour dates on her web site, and when you meet her, tell her Dave sent you.

Meanwhile, if you're waiting for the next episode of Dave's Lounge…

    • Show #301 is in the can! You can hear it first on BeatLounge Radio on Sunday, January 25, at 6:00 PM ET / 2300 UTC.
    • The episode will hit the podcast feed on January 30, though it might get to the Dave's Lounge App a bit sooner.
    • From here on out, all show notes will include timestamps, so you can see when a particular song was played.
    • This is the first episode in which I announce what each song is after it's played, rather than before. Do let me know how you like that format.
    • There is new music from Natalie Walker in this episode. Yes. I'm rather stoked.

One more thing: Dave's Lounge is no longer accepting Bitcoin donations, but will continue to encourage the use of Dwolla where I can. (I think I received a grand total of 0.02 BTC from that experiment, so no big loss.)

That's all for now. For more updates, follow Dave's Lounge on Twitter, Facebook, and Ello.

    Dave’s Lounge #300: The 2014 Yearbook Dec 21, 2014
    Show notes

Dave's Lounge Music Podcast #300 - The 2014 YearbookAs our lonely little planet once again turns a corner and makes its way around the sun, we look back at the year that was by taking a moment to examine what our media landscape has become. We live in a world where the recording and radio industries are run by big data, and it turns out we're the ones supplying a lot of that data. We live in a media environment where a breach of a movie studio's computer security can somehow morph into a “terrorist threat” against “American interests”. In this sort of environment, it helps to understand who's really delivering a message like that and why. It also helps to realize how that environment gets funded, and what we can do to change that.

Independent voices in media are more important than ever these days, and there's never been a better time to support them.

If you've missed hearing me talk at the beginning of the show, you're in luck. I've got plenty to say this week.

I also have more than two hours of great music from this year for you. Here are the songs that you selected as your favorites from 2014. Here's to another trip around the sun, and here's to the music that guided us along the way…

    Join Me In A #MusicExperiment Nov 28, 2014
    Show notes

Have you ever wondered how hit records become hits, and why you hear them on the radio all the time?

In this article for TheAtlantic.com called “The Shazam Effect”, Derek Thompson wrote about how the music industry is turning to big data to determine what music people like and how to give them more of it. Every time we Shazam a song or stream a song on Spotify, Rdio, YouTube, etc., we give the music industry data on what we want to hear.

So what would happen if we all Shazam'ed a song at once? If the music biz has become merely a big computer, can that computer be hacked?

Let's find out! Everyone watch the video below, Shazam this song, then send it to all your friends and ask them to do the same. Let's all get a better understand at what the music biz has become here in the 21st century — and how we might be able to impact it.

Again, there are some copyright issues that prevent me from including some of those live sets in the podcast feed. I might be able to include them on Soundcloud in the future, but we'll see.

Two of the artists I featured in that set lead of this week's show, which has a bigger, more orchestral vibe than what you might usually hear on this podcast. Then again, sometimes you never know what you might hear when I'm DJing…

DJX Weekend Live Set Now On Mixcloud Nov 18, 2014
    Show notes

As you fly into Philadelphia, you can see the thick grey smoke rising from the power plants on the river, even in the dead of night. Urban renewal and urban decay live side by side everywhere you look. It's a hardscrabble city that demands more from its residents than any part of America really should.

Dave's Lounge GlassAnd I can't stop loving the place.

I mean, look at this whiskey glass. Benjamin Chou, who's been part of the Philadelphia blues and fusion dance scenes for a while now, laser-etched this bad boy and presented it to me on Friday, the night of my 2:00 AM set at DJX Fusion Weekend. How awesome is that? He made special glasses for several other mutual friends of ours, too. The DJX crew and the dancers in Philly are wonderful people, and I am both happy to call them friends and grateful that they offered me the opportunity to come and play some tunes at their event again this year.

Because this mix contains some major label tunes, I am unable to make it available on the podcast feed, but I can post it to Mixcloud. This was played and recorded live using Traktor DJ for the iPad, and it's presented here, warts and all. There are a few similarities toward the end between this mix and my Shakori Hills Recess mix from last September, mostly because there wasn't much overlap between those two crowds. The first 10 minutes got a great response from the crowd; they might get you up and dancing, too.

    Here's the set list:

1.) Ana Popovic, “Mo' Better Love (feat. Tommy Sims)”
    2.) Marian Hill, “Whisky”
    3.) Blackstreet, “No Diggity”
4.) Chet Faker, “Terms And Conditions”
5.) Andreya Triana, “Lost Where I Belong”
6.) Submotion Orchestra, “Trust / Lust”
7.) Marina Quaisse, “8th of July”
8.) Alice Russell, “I'm The Man That Will Find You”
    9.) Tori Amos, “Sugar”
    10.) Feist, “Brandy Alexander”
11.) Alina Baraz & Galimatias, “Pretty Thoughts”
    12.) Moloko, “Statues”
13.) Lovespirals, “Feels So Good (Yumenomado's Film Noir Mix)”
14.) Motif, “One More Time (feat. Naemi Joy)”

Enjoy! And thanks again for the great times, Philadelphia!
