How to Survive the End of the World

Join Autumn Brown and adrienne maree brown, two sisters who share many identities, as writers, activists, facilitators, and inheritors of multiracial diasporic lineages, as well as a particular interest in the question of survival, as we embark on a podcast that delves into the practices we need as a community, to move through endings and to come out whole on the other side, whatever that might be.

    A Mother's Letter Oct 31, 2025
    Show notes

Hi Beloveds. We’re back with an episode to share from another show we love. Radio Workshop trains youth across Africa to make radio and podcasts. They provide the tools and teach the skills. Youth bring their creativity, local knowledge, and passion for tackling the issues that matter to them and their communities.

On today’s show...Rihanna was just 19 years old when she was arrested for being trans in Uganda. It was 2014. She spent 9 months in prison - an ordeal that tore a rift between her and her God-fearing mother. In this episode, we hear how her arrest radically changed the course of their lives - and how Rihanna’s mom unexpectedly became a staunch ally. This is the second in our two-part series on LGBTQ rights in Uganda, as the Anti-Homosexuality Act of 2023 turns a year old. This is A Mother’s Letter from Radio Workshop

The Revolution Will Be Incremental with Rebecca Solnit Aug 01, 2025
    Show notes

The sisters are ecstatic to build with writer, activist and historian Rebecca Solnit. Her latest book is No Straight Road Takes You There: Essays on Uneven Terrain.

They talk about how solidarity is always across difference and about the things we have in common mattering more then the things we don't, how liberation is contagious, prioritizing where to pour our energy, a politics of inseparability vs. the politics of division, our default response of turning towards each other in a crisis, how it turns out that even when your world has fallen apart you can light up with joy because you found the meaning and connection that's been missing in everyday life, a world with an abundance of time and security rather than abundance as neoliberal rhetoric, how there's no shortage of anything, just distribution problems, hunkering down for the likely reality of climate collapse and how we can't save everything but that doesn't mean we can't save anything.

The Illusion of a Clear, Direct Path to Freedom with Chinyere Tutashinda and Rico Sisney Jul 25, 2025
    Show notes

As we near the end of our season of solidarity, the sisters are thrilled to go deep with Chinyere Tutashinda, co-founder of the BlackOUT Collective and current Executive Director at the Center for Third World Organizing Hub, and Rico Sisney, Director of Action Strategies and Programs at the Center for Third World Organizing Hub.

They discuss reform vs. revolution, taking America for granted, the dysfunction of the USA, direct actions that model concepts beyond nation-states, choosing right actions in troubling times, it's not either/or, being prefigurative in our actions, how much of a population needs to actively participate for there to be movement, regime change vs. systems change, how power is fundamentally held, keeping vulnerable communities safe while participating, risk tolerance, who's gonna water your plants if you're in jail, what makes a tactic legitimate, the biggest block to solidarity and the illusion of a clear, direct path to freedom.

adrienne is joined at her home by Devin Atallah and Sarah Ihmoud to hear their love story. They discuss what love has to do with solidarity, falling in love, Palestinians in love, searching for love, eternal love, self love, decolonial love, love during a genocide, Palestine as a land of love, love as a way of breaking the cycle, love and light, idealized love, dreams as love, being activated by love, love as rerouting and love for humanity.

Devin Atallah is an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMB). He is a diaspora Palestinian from the USA and Chile. Dr. Atallah developed a Palestinian decolonial healing guide with colleagues, CURCUMs Trees: A Decolonial Healing Guide for Palestinian Community Health Workers, which is available in English and Arabic with Mayfly Books.

Sarah Ihmoud is a Chicana-Palestinian anthropologist who works to uplift the lived experiences, histories, and political contributions of Palestinian women and Palestinian feminism. She is a founding member of the Palestinian Feminist Collective, an executive board member of Insaniyyat, the Society of Palestinian Anthropologists, and is assistant professor of anthropology at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.

He is a professor at the Seattle University School of Law and author of the new book, Love in a Fucked Up World: How to Build Relationships, Hook Up, and Raise Hell, Together.

Dean and Autumn and adrienne discuss holding anxiety in your body, literally touching and flirting with trees, the most exciting thing on your horizon, giving eachother what we need, self-authorizing, the dangers of isolation, why we become relationship monsters, love as a psychedelic journey, how our childhoods play into our patterns, Getting the Love You Want by Harville Hendrix, everyone needing good, quality attention, the exclusivity spell, normalizing jealousy, locating our personal sore spots and whether we're gonna be able to move together enough to stop these ecocidal maniacs bent on killing us all!

The sisters convene to consider the realizion that aging means being in grief all the time but continuing, nonetheless, writing in the bath, taking responsibility for our inner state, the free Chani Breakthrough Course, the dream job of being a backup vocalist, political youth theatre, awesome kids learning from awesome parents, conflicted perpetrators and the sisters' personal journey on that pathway, 9/11, what it means to be an American, the disorientation and nausea of "What the hell? I'm the hell!", leaving cults when you realized it all made sense till it didn't, how Robin Hood triggered anti-authoritarianism, the rich history of student organizing at Columbia, the normalization of being at the top of a military superpower, the big question of 'is anything real?', having a different kind of conversation with your parents, sitting with the ocean, the cult of purity, fugitive resistance as a way of resisting the ideology of the state, figuring out how to not shop on Amazon, moving from cult to cult, needing a new belief system, and how solidarity is the only salve once you recognize that you're in the perpetrator role.
