    Sean Claffey - Americonned Jun 16, 2023
    Show notes

Americonned is a film about income inequality in the US and the tragic destabilizing effects to Americans. Radical inequality has led to radicalization at every level of society, and this powerful documentary depicts what happens when America hits its tipping point by looking back through our history at similar critical moments of instability. The labor movement of the past was born in times just like these. We must restore the path to the once great middle class that now suffers in silence. Despite increases in productivity in recent decades, compensation for the American worker has been stagnant. And now, 47% of American jobs are at high risk of being lost to automation and A.I. by the mid-2030s.

Glenn Cooper - The Lost Pope Jun 15, 2023
    Show notes

In this action-packed thriller, a Harvard theology professor uncovers religious and papal history—and plenty of conspiracy.

Cal Donovan, a theology professor at Harvard, receives an urgent message from a former graduate student, Samia Tedros. Now a museum conservator in Cairo, Samia has discovered a miraculous fragment of papyrus with three unknown lines from the Gospel of Mary Magdalene so explosive that a wealthy man is willing to kill to ensure no one ever sees it.

At the Vatican, another drama is developing. The new Pope has defied centuries of tradition and appointed a nun, Sister Elisabetta Celestino, as his secretary of state. Powerful insiders are outraged that a woman now sits as the second most influential person at the Vatican, and they plot to destroy her.

When Samia shows up at Cal’s doorstep in the dead of night, he is drawn into a deadly competition to possess a papyrus with the power to rescue Sister Elisabetta and change the course of Christianity

Maureen Boyle - Child Last Seen Jun 14, 2023
    Show notes

HER CASE HAD BEEN CLOSED—BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.

On an unseasonably warm winter evening in Pennsylvania, 15-year-old Patty Desmond sneaked out through the basement of her house. She had a history of running away, and that, combined with an argument with her mother, gave police reason to suspect she’d come home in a week or two.

The year was 1965. That night was the last time her family ever saw her.

Conrad Eugene Miller was well-known to local law enforcement. An older married man with a child, Miller’s association with Patty was questionable at best. Yet he was the last person known to have seen her alive—and the suspect police continued to circle back toward.

After nothing but false sightings and rumors, the case was moved to the backburner—where it stayed. As decades crept by, reality sunk in: Patty Desmond was never coming back. Then, a tiny crack unleashed a flood of information, and a mystery that had never quite been forgotten was solved.

Jode Millman - The Empty Kayak Jun 13, 2023
    Show notes

For Detective Ebony Jones, crime is always personal. But this time, it strikes too close to home.

A pop-up thunderstorm marched its way across the Hudson River, ambushing a young couple’s kayaking trip. The woman miraculously made it back to shore, but her fiancé remains missing. Ebony and her partner are the first responders who rush to the river to assist in rescuing the capsized boater.

The victim’s identity shocks Ebony to the core. Kyle Emory, the ex-boyfriend of her estranged best friend, attorney Jessie Martin, is the man who never made it out of the water. The accident ignites a firestorm between the two friends, pitting them against each other in a race to discover whether Kyle survived or whether he met his untimely demise. Under pressure from the chief and the DA, Ebony needs to solve the mystery, while Jessie seeks justice for the sake of the daughter she shares with Kyle. The investigation leads them through the dark worlds of social media, online sports betting, and extreme sports. Along the way, they uncover lies and betrayals and gather a list of dangerous suspects who are all linked to the accident survivor, Kyle’s mysterious fiancée. Even more, the discovery that Kyle possessed his own life-shattering secrets has trapped Ebony between her career and her lifelong friendship with Jessie. Yet neither Ebony nor Jessie will stop until they discover the truth about the drowning, even if it destroys their friendship and their lives.

But the evidence is as murky as the secretive Hudson River. Only the river knows whether Kyle’s tragic death was an accident, a suicide, or something more sinister.

Jeff McArthur - Pro Bono : The Fugate Files Jun 10, 2023
    Show notes

In 1958, 19-year-old Charles Starkweather went on a murder spree that paralyzed Nebraska, shocked the nation, and left 11 people dead. With him when he was captured was his 14-year-old ex-girlfriend Caril Fugate. The question soon arose, was Caril a kidnapped victim, or a heartless accomplice?

County Attorney Elmer Scheele had already determined her guilt, pressing charges before she was captured. He and his deputies questioned her without offering her the chance to speak with an attorney. Two weeks later, one was at last appointed to her, John McArthur.

McArthur became so convinced of Caril’s innocence that he dove into the work; continuing to represent her pro bono even after she was given a life sentence. After 18 years, he was finally successful when she was released on parole.

McArthur’s files from the case were kept in his home office through the decades. This book reveals some of the more interesting elements found inside, and it serves as a supplement to the book Pro Bono: The 18-Year Defense of Caril Ann Fugate.

Thomas Westerfield - Goes On, Without the World's Understanding Jun 09, 2023
    Show notes

    Compassionate. Provocative. Moving.

In this new collection, Thomas Westerfield challenges our expectations about the stories that can be told regarding sexuality, race, love, abuse, trauma, art, and intergenerational relationships.

We meet, among others, a men’s sexual abuse group in rebellion against their earth mother therapist; a ninety-six-year-old gay cult writer who confronts a young queer interviewer; a burnt-out white professor playing dangerous academic games with his Black lesbian colleague; a teenager in a small Kentucky town in 1971 who experiences gay life for the first time through the movie, The Boys in the Band; a retired man sharing a Las Vegas roulette table with a lonely drunk college student celebrating his twenty-first birthday; a little boy terrified of what his Barbies will do to him in the dark of night; and a sex-trafficked young man, now free, explaining why he will never return to his family.

Some find acceptance, even peace, within the many contradictory and often warring elements of their hearts; some do not. But all are embraced with compassionate acceptance as they go on, without the world’s understanding.

Phillip Strang - Dark Streets Jun 03, 2023
    Show notes

A homeless man, Old Joe's death was not unexpected. Not until it was found to be murder.

This was Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross, once a hub of inequity, of strip joints and gentleman's clubs, of licensed premises and restaurants. But now, the area is changing, going upmarket, another enclave for those that can afford it, not a place for the homeless, nor is it a place of murder, but then, another murder in Point Piper, upmarket and exclusive, a woman, her throat cut.

Detective Gary Haddock's a seasoned hand in Homicide, but he's baffled by the murders. Statistically, Sydney's Eastern Suburbs rarely has a murder, but after four, are they serial or random, and if they are, why?

Sergeant Natalie Campbell from Kings Cross Police Station is wet behind the ears when she pairs with Haddock, but she soon learns that she is more astute than the man, although she's a risk taker. He has to protect her, but she will take the investigations forward.
