    JUST A COP - HAL CUNNINGHAM Mar 22, 2019
    Show notes

Toronto, Canada. A city that has perilously transformed over a short period of thirty years from a relatively peaceful, naive, 'small-town’ city, to a sprawling urban metropolis plagued with crime, guns, gangs and violence.

Just A Cop is a rare memoir written by a street level cop, Hal Cunningham, who witnessed this transformation first hand. Beginning his career in 1973 as an unarmed cadet, Cunningham earned his way through the ranks from a constable on patrol, to undercover street intelligence officer, and eventually to the rank of Staff Sergeant and Platoon Commander.

This memoir is a first of its kind. Through the eyes of a frontline police officer who’s been there and witnessed much, it offers a raw look at how “Toronto the Good” changed into a 'mean streets' city whose per capita murder rate is now higher than that of New York City

    NAPOLEON: A LIFE - ANDREW ROBERTS Mar 16, 2019
    Show notes

The definitive biography of the great soldier-statesman by the acclaimed author of The Storm of War—winner of the LA Times Book prize, finalist for the Plutarch prize, winner of the Fondation Napoleon prize and a New York Times bestseller

“A thrilling tale of military and political genius… Roberts is an uncommonly gifted writer.”

    – The Washington Post

Austerlitz, Borodino, Waterloo: his battles are among the greatest in history, but Napoleon Bonaparte was far more than a military genius and astute leader of men. Like George Washington and his own hero Julius Caesar, he was one of the greatest soldier-statesmen of all times.

Andrew Roberts’s Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon’s thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine. Like Churchill, he understood the strategic importance of telling his own story, and his memoirs, dictated from exile on St. Helena, became the single bestselling book of the nineteenth century.

An award-winning historian, Roberts traveled to fifty-three of Napoleon’s sixty battle sites, discovered crucial new documents in archives, and even made the long trip by boat to St. Helena. He is as acute in his understanding of politics as he is of military history. Here at last is a biography worthy of its subject: magisterial, insightful, beautifully written, by one of our foremost historians.

JOHN HECHINGER Broken Pledge of America's Fraternities Mar 15, 2019
    Show notes

College fraternity culture has never been more embattled. Once a mainstay of campus life, fraternities are now subject to withering criticism for reinforcing white male privilege and undermining the lasting social and economic value of a college education.

No fraternity embodies this problem more than Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a national organization with more than 15,000 undergraduate brothers spread over 230 chapters nationwide. While SAE enrollment is still strong, it has been pilloried for what John Hechinger calls "the unholy trinity of fraternity life": racism, deadly drinking, and misogyny. Hazing rituals have killed ten undergraduates in its chapters since 2005, and, in 2015, a video of a racist chant breaking out among its Oklahoma University members went viral. That same year, SAE was singled out by a documentary on campus rape, The Hunting Ground. Yet despite these problems and others, SAE remains a large institution with strong ties to Wall Street and significant political reach.

SHANE O'SULLIVAN- DIRTY TRICKS (JFK ASSASSINATION) Mar 01, 2019
    Show notes

The victory of Richard Nixon in the US presidential election of 1968 swung on an "October Surprise"--a treasonous plot engineered by key figures in the Republican Party to keep the South Vietnamese government away from peace talks in Paris, costing thousands of American lives. Dirty Tricks provides compelling new evidence of Anna Chennault's Nixon-approved role in sabotaging the peace talks and ensuring a Nixon White House.

Dirty Tricks also provides the first detailed analysis of the CIA's recently-released internal history of Watergate, documenting the backgrounds of the burglars and their associations with the Agency in unprecedented detail, and how the Nixon White House sought to implicate the CIA in the emerging scandal. CIA Director Richard Helms' relationship with Watergate burglar E. Howard Hunt was much closer than previously disclosed and the CIA agent inside the plot was sent on a double agent mission by American intelligence after he got out of prison.

SCOTT WOLTER - AMERICA UNEARTHED Feb 19, 2019
    Show notes

Last season, the late researcher and author, Zena Halpern, presented a map to the Lagina brothers that clearly shows Oak Island along with several words, names and phrases written in French. Ms. Halpern appeared on the show and explained the map was related to what she called a “Templar Document”, but from here on will be referred to as the “Cremona Document.” The Cremona Document, and the Oak Island map, were the primary subject matter of Ms. Halpern’s 2017 book, The Templar Mission to Oak Island and Beyond: The Search for Ancient Secrets: Shocking Revelations of a 12th Century Manuscript. That 12th Century manuscript is the Cremona Document.

CODY LACHEY - UK PRISON REFORM Feb 16, 2019
    Show notes

Cody Lachey: I’ve been in Strangeways and Forest Bank, which is a category B prison in Salford. Like I say, I still speak to a lot of prisoners up and down the country and I’ve seen report after report from prisoners, serving prisoners, former prisoners and obviously Her Majesty’s Inspector of Prisons, and the fact is prisons are squalid, vermin infested, dilapidated, run down and just decrepit. Old Victorian prisons for the most part. Like I say, treating prisoners in that way and having them live in those conditions, does not aid rehabilitation in any which way – if anything it goes right the other way.

FRED ROSEN - BLOOD CRIMES Feb 15, 2019
    Show notes

Raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses and frustrated with their parents’ repressive rules, Bryan and David Freeman rebelled as teenagers. Encouraged by an acquaintance he met while institutionalized at a reform school, Bryan became a neo-Nazi. Bryan then indoctrinated David, and their flare for defiance took a dark turn. After callously murdering their father, mother, and younger brother, the skinhead brothers took flight across America, with police from 3 states in hot pursuit. They were eventually captured in Michigan and returned to Pennsylvania for trial

    FAULT LINES - KEVIN KRUSE & JULIAN E ZELIZER Feb 14, 2019
    Show notes

If you were asked when America became polarized, your answer would likely depend on your age: you might say during Barack Obama’s presidency, or with the post-9/11 war on terror, or the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s, or the “Reagan Revolution” and the the rise of the New Right.

For leading historians Kevin M. Kruse and Julian E. Zelizer, it all starts in 1974. In that one year, the nation was rocked by one major event after another: The Watergate crisis and the departure of President Richard Nixon, the first and only U.S. President to resign; the winding down of the Vietnam War and rising doubts about America’s military might; the fallout from the OPEC oil embargo that paralyzed America with the greatest energy crisis in its history; and the desegregation busing riots in South Boston that showed a horrified nation that our efforts to end institutional racism were failing.

In the years that followed, the story of our own lifetimes would be written. Longstanding historical fault lines over income inequality, racial division, and a revolution in gender roles and sexual norms would deepen and fuel a polarized political landscape. In Fault Lines, Kruse and Zelizer reveal how the divisions of the present day began almost five decades ago, and how they were widened thanks to profound changes in our political system as well as a fracturing media landscape that was repeatedly transformed with the rise of cable TV, the internet, and social media.
