DR. JACOB APPEL - WHO SAYS YOU'RE DEAD? Oct 29, 2019
    Show notes

Drawing upon the author’s two decades teaching medical ethics, as well as his work as a practicing psychiatrist, this profound and addictive little book offers up challenging ethical dilemmas and asks readers, What would you do?

    • A daughter gets tested to see if she’s a match to donate a kidney to her father. The test reveals that she is not the man’s biological daughter. Should the doctor tell the father? Or the daughter?
    • A deaf couple prefers a deaf baby. Should they be allowed to use medical technology to ensure they have a child who can’t hear?
    • Who should get custody of an embryo created through IVF when a couple divorces?
    • Or, when you or a loved one is on life support, Who says you’re dead?

In short, engaging scenarios, Dr. Appel takes on hot-button issues that many of us will confront: genetic screening, sexuality, privacy, doctor-patient confidentiality. He unpacks each hypothetical with a brief reflection drawing from science, philosophy, and history, explaining how others have approached these controversies in real-world cases. Who Says You’re Dead? is designed to defy easy answers and to stimulate thought and even debate among professionals and armchair ethicists alike.

BAD VOLF - JOHN MARK DOUGAN & RON CHEPESIUK Oct 25, 2019
    Show notes

This true story is about John Mark Dougan, a Marine Corps veteran and former police officer who had enough of the violence and crime plaguing the Criminal Justice system. He blew the whistle and was retaliated against by the police administration. Dougan started setting up whistleblower websites all around the country for good cops to spill their secrets without fear or retribution. The justice system launched illegal investigation after investigation into every aspect of John's life, and John set up a clever operation to trick them into admitting they were illegally accessing his email and social media accounts. When the FBI ignored John's demands for an investigation, he became BadVolf, starting a digital war with the very law enforcement agencies who were retaliating against him.John tricked everyone, including the media, into believing he was a Russian hacker before engaging in a strategic, one-man campaign of disinformation, fake news, hacking, social engineering and doxing. John did all the activities that people love to blame on Russia, except he did it as an American citizen, on American soil; retribution and deception the only way to fight back against criminals in charge of local, state and federal American law enforcement agencies. After an eight-year-long battle, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Dougan’s home, ordering surveillance teams to follow and attempt to capture him at any cost. Dougan however, had other plans; he donned a disguise and slipped away into exile using the skills acquired in the Marine Corps, police agencies and from working with technology. This is the story of how BadVolf was created, and the resulting two-week long escape from these badge-toting criminals is a riveting story that led John to obtain political asylum in Russia.

EVAN BERNSTEIN - SKEPTICS' GUIDE TO THE UNIVERSE Oct 24, 2019
    Show notes

The USA TODAY bestseller is now in paperback with a new chapter on Global Warming! This all-encompassing guide to skeptical thinking from podcast host and academic neurologist at Yale University School of Medicine Steven Novella and his SGU co-hosts, which Richard Wiseman calls "the perfect primer for anyone who wants to separate fact from fiction."

It is intimidating to realize that we live in a world overflowing with misinformation, bias, myths, deception, and flawed knowledge. There really are no ultimate authority figures-no one has the secret, and there is no place to look up the definitive answers to our questions (not even Google).

Luckily, THE SKEPTICS' GUIDE TO THE UNIVERSE is your map through this maze of modern life. Here Dr. Steven Novella-along with Bob Novella, Cara Santa Maria, Jay Novella, and Evan Bernstein-will explain the tenets of skeptical thinking and debunk some of the biggest scientific myths, fallacies, and conspiracy theories-from anti-vaccines to homeopathy, UFO sightings to N- rays. You'll learn the difference between science and pseudoscience, essential critical thinking skills, ways to discuss conspiracy theories with that crazy co- worker of yours, and how to combat sloppy reasoning, bad arguments, and superstitious thinking.

So are you ready to join them on an epic scientific quest, one that has taken us from huddling in dark caves to setting foot on the moon? (Yes, we really did that.) DON'T PANIC! With THE SKEPTICS' GUIDE TO THE UNIVERSE, we can do this together.

FRAUDS, MYTHS AND MYSTERIES - KENNETH FEDER Oct 23, 2019
    Show notes

Frauds, myths, and supposed mysteries about humanity's past are moving targets for anyone committed to the scientific investigation of human antiquity. It is important for anyone interested in the human past to know, for example, that there is no evidence for a race of giant human beings in antiquity and no broken shards of laser guns under Egyptian pyramids. Debunking such nonsense is fun and useful in its own way, but more important is the process by which we determine that such claims are bunk.

Now published by Oxford University Press, Frauds, Myths, and Mysteries: Science and Pseudoscience in Archaeology, Ninth Edition, uses interesting--and often humorous--archaeological hoaxes, myths, and mysteries to show how we can truly know things about the past through science. It is not just a book about how we know what isn't true about the human past--it's also about how we know what is true.

    CONVICTING A MURDERER - SHAWN RECH Oct 17, 2019
    Show notes

Shawn Rech, the director of another documentary, "Convicting a Murderer," told Fox News' Dana Perino on "The Daily Briefing" Tuesday that the bombshell confession was captured on tape and has been turned over to investigators who "need to dig in."

Steven Avery, 57, and his nephew, Brenden Dassey, 29, were both convicted of Halbach's murder and sentenced to life in prison. They both maintained their innocence on "Making a Murderer," which examined the conspiracy theories surrounding their convictions and explored whether law enforcement framed the two.

Rech, who has not released the inmate's name, called the new confession "very strange," and explained how it fell into his production team's lap.

KEN KRATZ - NEW INMATE CONFESSION Oct 16, 2019
    Show notes

Wisconsin inmate has reportedly confessed to the murder of Teresa Halbach. The inmate, who will remain unnamed until Wisconsin law enforcement has access to said confession, told filmmakers of upcoming documentary series Convicting a Murderer, that he was responsible for the infamous death, as seen on Making a Murderer.

Currently, there are two men behind bars for Halbach's death. Both claim they are innocent. Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey have both spent years fighting for their freedom. Dassey took his case all the way to the Supreme Court, where his attempt at a new trial was rejected, while Avery continues the appeal process.

The Netflix series Making a Murderer was a runaway hit, with over 19 million US viewers in the first 35 days. The series left many with the opinion that Steven Avery, a man falsely imprisoned for almost 20 years on a previous, unrelated assault charge, had been framed by a corrupt police force and district attorney’s office for the murder of a young photographer. Viewers were outraged, and hundreds of thousands demanded a pardon for Avery. The chief villain of the series? Ken Kratz, the special prosecutor who headed the investigation and trial. Kratz’s later misdeeds—prescription drug abuse and sexual harassment—only cemented belief in his corruption.

This book tells you what Making a Murderer didn’t.

While indignation at the injustice of his first imprisonment makes it tempting to believe in his innocence, Avery: The Case Against Steven Avery and What Making a Murderer Gets Wrong and the evidence shared inside—examined thoroughly and dispassionately—prove that, in this case, the criminal justice system worked just as it should.

With Avery, Ken Kratz puts doubts about Steven Avery’s guilt to rest. In this exclu- sive insider’s look into the controversial case, Kratz lets the evidence tell the story, sharing details and insights unknown to the public. He reveals the facts Making a Murderer conveniently left out and then candidly addresses the aftermath—openly discussing, for the first time, his own struggle with addiction that led him to lose everything.

Avery systematically erases the uncertainties introduced by the Netflix series, confirming, once and for all, that Steven Avery is guilty of the murder of Teresa Halbach.

WHISTLEBLOWERS - DR ALLISON STANGER Oct 10, 2019
    Show notes

Misconduct by those in high places is always dangerous to reveal. Whistleblowers thus face conflicting impulses: by challenging and exposing transgressions by the powerful, they perform a vital public service—yet they always suffer for it. This episodic history brings to light how whistleblowing, an important but unrecognized cousin of civil disobedience, has held powerful elites accountable in America.

Analyzing a range of whistleblowing episodes, from the corrupt Revolutionary War commodore Esek Hopkins (whose dismissal led in 1778 to the first whistleblower protection law) to Edward Snowden, to the dishonesty of Donald Trump, Allison Stanger reveals the centrality of whistleblowing to the health of American democracy. She also shows that with changing technology and increasing militarization, the exposure of misconduct has grown more difficult to do and more personally costly for those who do it—yet American freedom, especially today, depends on it
