DYLAN HOWARD - DIANA: CASE SOLVED May 12, 2020
    Show notes

“This particular phase in my life is the most dangerous. My husband is planning ‘an accident’ in my car, brake failure and serious head injury in order to make the path clear for him to marry.” —Letter written by Princess Diana, late 1996

It is a moment that remains frozen in history. When the Mercedes carrying Diana, Princess of Wales, spun fatally out of control in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris in August 1997, the world was shocked by what appeared to be a terrible accident.

But two decades later, the circumstances surrounding what really happened that night—and, crucially, why it happened—remain mired in suspicion, controversy, and misinformation. Until now. Dylan Howard has re-examined all of the evidence surrounding Diana’s death—official documents, eyewitness testimony and Diana’s own private journals—as well as amassing dozens of new interviews with investigators, witnesses, and those closest to the princess to ask one very simple question: Was the death of Princess Diana a tragedy…or treason?

Diana: Case Solved has uncovered in unprecedented detail just how much of a threat Diana became to the establishment. In these pages you will learn of the covert diaries and recordings she made, logging the Windsors’ most intimate secrets and hidden scandals as a desperate kind of insurance policy. You will learn how the royals were not the only powerful enemies she made, as her ground-breaking campaigns against AIDS and landmines drew admiration from the public, but also enmity from powerful establishment figures including international arms dealers, the British and American governments, and the MI6 and the CIA.

And, in a dramatic return to the Parisian streets where she met her fate, the two questions that have plagued investigators for over twenty years will finally be answered: Why was Diana being driven in a car previously written off as a death trap? And who was really behind the wheel of the mysterious white Fiat at the scene of the crash?

JOLLY ROGER UK BAND May 05, 2020
    Show notes

Hailing from the pirate haven of Penzance, this fun, upbeat, pirate-folk band have hung up their cutlasses, exchanged their galleon for a land ship (named Hubert Cumberdale) and taken to a life of music.

Formed in February 2019, punk-rock-folk-pirate band JollyRoger are already taking the south-west by storm, gigging port, bow & starboard. Soon getting booked for the likes of Boardmasters Festival & performing live on BBC RADIO CORNWALL & TCR RADIO. One year later, in February 2020, they had a sell-out first year show. They were then asked to support one of their musical influences, The Rumjacks. Next, the three were approached by Channel 4 and were filmed playing their first single '21st Century Pirate' for the show 'Britain's Most Historic Towns', which is scheduled to air in June 2020.

They have built a loyal fan base & reached over 4000 followers on Facebook in their first year alone. Now, they are getting regular slots at reputable venues & have (had) a full calendar full of festivals & gigs for the rest of this year. Bookings include, hosting Bloodstock Festivals Metal 2 the Masses Final, Brixham Pirate Day & winning a newcomer slot at the biggest medieval festival in Europe - Mediaval Festival in Selb, Germany.

In September 2019, JollyRoger released their first, home recorded EP 'Everyday Pirate' (Here’s a link to their 5 track EP on Spotify). Tracks have since been played on Coast FM, BCFM radio & Astro Radio. Charity EP 'Silent Mountain' came in November 2019. A rowing themed EP made in memory of family member, Christopher. A community gig boat was made in his honour and JollyRoger sang the EP during the launch, half of the EP profits go to charity sadsuk.org.uk. JollyRoger have just released their selp-titled debut album which they aim to launch in May 2020! You can find out how to pre-order by visiting www.facebook.com/jollyrogerbanduk

JollyRoger comprises of brother & sister, Jae Dennis (guitar/ ukelele/ harmonica) & Samantha Hannah (mandolin/guitar) plus Kynan Sandles on the lesser-seen acoustic bass guitar, all of which grew up in the pirate haven of Penzance. These guys are family and their connection on stage adds that little extra to their music and performances as they naturally use the audience and foot stomping as their percussion.

Inspired and influenced by the vocals of 'The Pogues' crossed with 'Fisherman's Friends' with the energy of the 'Dropkick Murphys' and the comedy of 'Tenacious D', it's hard to categorise JollyRoger! Their aim is to provide a new genre of music that can be enjoyed by all, bringing all walks of life together. They demand audience immersion (even from your homes!)

MANSFIELD KILLINGS - SCOTT FIELDS Apr 23, 2020
    Show notes

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

It was the worse two-week killing spree in Ohio’s history.

On the night of July 21, 1948, Robert Daniels and John West entered John and Nolena Niebel’s house with loaded guns.

They forced the family including the Niebel’s 21-year-old daughter, Phyllis, into their car and drove them to a cornfield just off Fleming Falls Road in Mansfield.

The two men instructed the Niebels to remove all of their clothing, and then Robert Daniels shot each of them in the head.

The brutal murders caught national attention in the media, but the killing spree didn’t stop there.

Three more innocent people would lose their lives at the hands of Daniels and West in the coming week.

Scott Fields tirelessly researched the killings, the capture and trial of Daniels and even interviewed a surviving member of the Niebel family to weave this tragic story into a must-read novel bringing the reader back to those dark days in the summer of 1948.

What led to these brutal killings, and why was the Niebel family singled-out to be savagely murdered? It has been more than sixty years since the tragedy, and, yet, this question still remains unanswered. The killing spree is not only remembered to this day, but is an important and dark part of Mansfield lore.

ADAM WOOD - SWANSON (JACK THE RIPPER INTERVIEWS #9) Apr 16, 2020
    Show notes

Donald Sutherland Swanson was born in the remote far north of Scotland, leaving for London in 1867 at the age of 19 and initially working as a City clerk.

The following year he joined the Metropolitan Police and began patrolling the streets of the capital as a uniformed constable. 35 years later he retired as Superintendent of the Criminal Investigation Department, the top detective in the country.

Set against the backdrop of the developing Metropolitan Police, this book tells the story of a life and career which included railway murderers, grave robbers, fraudulent mediums, Jack the Ripper, the Philosopher’s Stone, Fenian dynamite campaigns, shocking revelations about the aristocracy and a crazed captain with sea serpents in a bottle.

Linking it all together is Donald Swanson, whose application letter to the Metropolitan Police spoke of a desire for “a good opening”. After reading his story, the reader will be left in little doubt that he made the most of the opportunities which came his way.
