ANDREW FIRTH - PICTURES OF THE ABYSS (JACK THE RIPPER) Sep 05, 2020
    Show notes

PICTURES OF THE ABYSS will be published in A4 hardback, 142 landscape pages in full colour throughout, in late September 2020. Pre-order a limited edition copy, signed by the author and individually numbered. Deadline 31st August 2020.

In the early years of the twentieth century, London was a city of opposites. The affluent west of the city was prosperous and wealthy, but in contrast the east was an area of poverty, crime and disease. Life expectancy was low, and the streets were filled with the homeless, the destitute and the sick.

When the American author Jack London ventured into the East End in the summer of 1902 to research the hopeless living conditions so typical of the area, he was to witness such sights as the cramped living conditions in shabby Frying Pan Alley, the revolting menial tasks that inmates of the Whitechapel casual ward carried out to pay for a dismal bed and a frugal meal of bread and ‘skilly’. In his book “The People of the Abyss”, a written account of his experiences, he relayed the tale of Dan Cullen, a resident of one of Whitechapel’s municipal dwellings, whose worsening health had forced him to move into the old Temperance Hospital, near Euston station. Jack had witnessed the sorry sight of the homeless sheltering under Tower Bridge and others trying to sleep by the steps of Christ Church in Spitalfields. He had tasted coffee and tea that was close in appearance to dirty dishwater and bore little resemblance to anything his readers might have drunk, and he had seen desperately hungry men and women pawing their way through the filthiest of meat scraps outside a butcher’s shop in Aldgate. In short, he had, if only briefly, lived the life of one of the people of the abyss, and had witnessed the horrendous life that circumstance had forced them to endure.

As well as his vivid written descriptions of the East End, Jack London also photographed a considerable number of evocative scenes to complement the text. These well-known images have been frequently reprinted over the years, often to illustrate books about Jack the Ripper and the East End in general.

But where exactly were these photographs taken? Jack London gives very little detail about the locations, choosing to caption the images vaguely as “A house to let” or the similarly ambiguous “Where the children grow up”. What do these obscure places look like today, and is there anything left of the old workhouses and dwellings that Jack London captured in his photos.

The answers to these questions are revealed in “PICTURES OF THE ABYSS”, a new photographic coffee-table style book by Andrew Firth. Published by Mango Books, it follows a similar format to his highly acclaimed book “Ripperland”, with the result of several years research presented as a series of ‘then and now’ photo-montages with accompanying maps and modern-day comparison shots.

By using high quality scans of the original photographs from the Jack London archives (including some rare or previously unpublished images), and then superimposing them into their modern-day equivalent scenes, photographer and graphic designer Andrew Firth has created a unique visual survey of what now remains of the old ‘Abyss’. The book contains over sixty photo-montages and over 150 colour and monochrome photographs of the scenes as they appear today. The book also features a foreword written by tour guide and author Richard Jones.

The long-awaited fifth book in the wildly popular series of horror/comedy novels featuring Andrew Mayhem!

As a stay-at-home dad taking care of triplets, Andrew Mayhem's days of getting into wild adventures are over. His life is measured in diaper changes. Sleep has become an abstract concept, something oft-discussed with his wife Helen but rarely experienced.

So when Internet celebrity explorer Percival Longshore asks Andrew and his best friend Roger to travel with him on a good old-fashioned treasure hunt, Andrew laughs off the idea. He can't even watch ten consecutive minutes of a movie, much less fly to the rainforest in South America to see if an old map is accurate.

The base pay is generous, the potential reward is astronomical, and Percival assures him that he will be in absolutely no danger. After Helen gives her blessing for Andrew to leave for a few days, he finds himself on a small motorboat on the Amazon River seeking his fortune. Maybe this adventure really will be different.

When they pass a skinned body tied to a pole, Andrew realizes that nothing has changed...

A DEADLY SECRET ROBERT DURST - MATTHEW BIRKBECK Aug 27, 2020
    Show notes

Matt Birkbeck is an award-winning investigative journalist and critically acclaimed author.

Birkbeck's latest book, FINDING SHARON (Summerville 2018) is the sequel to his international bestseller "A BEAUTIFUL CHILD" (Berkley/Penguin 2004), which tells the remarkable, tragic story of Sharon Marshall, a brilliant young woman who was kidnapped as a toddler by Franklin Delano Floyd, a convicted felon, fugitive, and pedophile who raised her as his daughter while traveling the country using stolen identities. Birkbeck spent six hours in a Florida prison in 2003 interviewing Floyd, who had just been sentenced to death for torturing and murdering a Tampa woman. In FINDING SHARON, he tells the final chapters, including the discovery of Sharon's true identity.

His previous books including "The Quiet Don" (Berkley/Penguin 2013), which tells the remarkable story of Mafia kingpin Russell Bufalino, who built a vast organized crime empire in the decades between Prohibition and the Carter presidency and whose power and influence reached the highest levels of government. Once described by a U.S. Senate subcommittee as "one of the most ruthless and powerful leaders of the Mafia in the United States," Bufalino's legacy left a culture of corruption that continues to this day.

Birkbeck also authored "Deconstructing Sammy: Music, Money, Madness, and the Mob" (Amistad/Harper Collins 2008), which tells the riveting story of Sammy Davis Jr. and the efforts to resolve his millions in debts and restore his legacy following his death in 1990. The New York Times Book Review called Deconstructing Sammy "Gripping" and "Sensational," and the Los Angeles Times called it "Epic."

Birkbeck's A Deadley Secret (Berkley/Putnam 2002 and 2015), explores the investigation into Robert Durst, the heir to a New York real estate fortune accused of killing his wife and two others. The Durst story exploded in March 2015 with the airing of HBO's The Jinx, in which Durst admitted to "killing them all." Following his arrest for murder, police searched his Houston condo where they found two copies of A Deadly Secret. Penguin re-released an updated version of the book in April 2015. The book was turned into the Lifetime TV movie "The Lost Wife of Robert Durst," which aired in November 2017.

Birkbeck is also the coauthor of Till Death Do Us Part (Atria/Simon & Schuster) in 2006 with Dr. Robi Ludwig, a noted psychologist who appears regularly on The Today Show and Larry King Live.

Birkbeck has written for the New York Times, Reader's Digest, Rolling Stone, People Magazine, Boston Magazine, and the Philadelphia Inquirer.

He is currently a senior writer at Harrison Scott Publications, covering Wall Street and financial regulatory issues in Washington, D.C.

ANDY GALLO - BETTER BE TRUE Aug 26, 2020
    Show notes

Andy Gallo's stories capture how he wished he'd spent his formative years, instead of how it really happened. Unfortunately for his characters, they find themselves infused with some of Andy's less noble qualities.

A hopeless romantic, Andy writes seated next to a hundred year old Smith Brothers typewriter he inherited from his grandfather. He also dreams of superheroes and wizards and sees no reason why two men with superpowers can't fall in love just like everyone else. Although not all of his stories have a paranormal bent, a touch of the supernatural never derailed a good read in his mind.

Married and living his happy every after, Andy helps others find their happy endings in the pages of his stories. He and his husband of more than twenty years spend their days rubbing elbows with other parents as they raise their daughter. Embracing his status as the gay dad, Andy sometimes has to remind others that one does want a hint of color even when chasing after their child
