The Flagship: In-depth look at Ragin' Cajuns with ULL reporter Raymond Partsch Sep 02, 2021
    Show notes

On this week's interview edition of The Flagship Podcast we preview Texas' season opener against the 23rd-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns with Raymond Partsch, host of RP3 and Company on 103.7 The Game in Lafayette (La.) and beat writer covering Louisiana for the Daily Iberian.

Partsch covers it all with Horns247 columnist Chip Brown - from how Louisiana, which is starting a season in the AP Top 25 for the first time in school history, had to adjust for Hurricane Ida coming ashore near New Orleans last weekend to coach Billy Napier as well as the offense, defense and special teams of the Ragin' Cajuns.

Partsch explains why he thinks Napier, the receivers coach at Alabama while Steve Sarkisian was an analyst for the Tide in 2016, turned down interest from Auburn and South Carolina as a head-coaching candidate after Louisiana went 10-1 last year, including a season-opening, 31-14 victory at Iowa State.

Partsch breaks down the Louisiana offense, starting with fifth-year "super senior" quarterback Levi Lewis (5-10, 190), whom Partsch says "makes good decisions and doesn't get you beat by making the big mistake" and who coaches turned loose more in the running game last season (when Lewis averaged 6.1 yards per carry).

Louisiana's leading rushers from last season - Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas - are in the NFL now, so the Ragin' Cajuns are looking to sophomore Chris Smith (No. 21) and freshman Emani Bailey (No. 20) of Denton Ryan to carry the load in Louisiana's run-first attack.

Louisiana has some big receivers, but Partsch says it's a mystery as to which one would be considered the go-to guy in the passing game, because Lewis spreads the ball around, including passes to the running backs.

Partsch breaks down the playmakers from a defense that he says is the strength of the Louisiana team and returns 10 starters from last season.

Partsch gives the edge in special teams to Louisiana, in part, because running back Chris Smith returned a couple kicks for touchdowns last season.

Partsch provides an injury update on the Ragin' Cajuns and wraps up the interview with a prediction for how the game will play out - so check it out!

The Flagship: Previewing Texas' home opener against Louisiana Sep 01, 2021

IT'S GAME WEEK!!! And The Flagship Podcast is here to get you ready!

In this week's episode, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown takes a three-dimensional view of everything that will be going on outside and inside DKR - before, during and after the Longhorns make their debut under new coach Steve Sarkisian.

Throw in the fact that Sarkisian's debut comes against a veteran Louisiana team (opening the season in the AP Top 25 - at No. 23 - for the first time in school history), coached by Billy Napier, who drew interest from two SEC coaching vacancies after last year's 10-1 season and the intrigue escalates.

Brown talks about how facing the Ragin Cajuns' fifth-year, dual-threat quarterback Levi Lewis will be good preparation for the other dual-threat quarterbacks Texas will face this season against the likes of TCU, Oklahoma State, Iowa State and Baylor.

This week’s episode also gets into Sarkisian's decision to start redshirt freshman quarterback Hudson Card (a story Brown broke last Saturday) with plans to also play redshirt junior QB Casey Thompson and how that's a departure for Sarkisian from past decisions about his signal-callers.

Brown covers all the variables that will impact Saturday's game - right down to a near-100-degree forecast - and how he's not surprised the betting line favoring Texas has shrunk.

The Flagship also dissects the Texas depth chart release this week and how Horns247 members shouldn't have been surprised by any of the starters. But Brown admits there were a few surprises beyond the starters and discusses which ones.

Brown has done his homework on the Ragin' Cajuns and points out some key players to watch on offense - in addition to Lewis at quarterback, and why Louisiana's 3-3-5 defense is no joke.

In everyone's favorite segment - Love It, Or Leave It – The Flagship gets into whether Saturday's game will be high scoring or low scoring and if special teams will play a significant role as well as what everyone's favorite new attraction on Bevo Boulevard will be on Saturday.

It's game week!! Let The Flagship Podcast get you ready!!

The Flagship: Key indicators pointing to Hudson Card being named Texas starting QB Aug 25, 2021
    Show notes

Horns247 reported Wednesday morning that key indicators are pointing to Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian turning to redshirt freshman QB Hudson Card to start the season off for the Longhorns. But what does this mean for the position itself with redshirt junior QB Casey Thompson having two years left of eligibility?

On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes deliver the latest on the Texas quarterback battle between Card and Thompson and why signs are pointing to Sarkisian relying on the redshirt freshman Card to start for the Longhorns' opening game against Louisiana. Chip and Taylor discuss some of the behind the scenes intel gathered that has lead to the QB competition trending in Card's direction and what this means for Thompson's future at Texas. The Flagship weighs in on all of the layers of this decision by Sarkisian, including if Thompson will head elsewhere with his two years of college eligibility still in tact as a grad transfer.

Chip and Taylor also discuss some developments coming out of preseason training camp, and what to make of the stomach virus that has been plaguing the Longhorns' locker room over the last week.

After a quick break, The Flagship returns with this week's edition of 'Love it or Leave it', which covers everything from how the running back position may or may not help Texas while the offense breaks in a first-time starting quarterback, if we think Card is the right guy to lead the offense and much more!

Texas fans won't want to miss this loaded episode of The Flagship Podcast!

Longhorn Blitz: Where things stand after Texas' second preseason scrimmage Aug 24, 2021
    Show notes

Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe are back to discuss the second preseason scrimmage for the Texas Longhorns under Steve Sarkisian. There's once again a lot to unpack on the latest edition of Longhorn Blitz, but ultimately, what should be made of the tables turning after the offense moved the ball up and down the field on the defense two weeks ahead of the season opener?

You can get the latest Longhorn news and analysis at Horns247. The Horn is where Rod (3-7 p.m.) and Jeff (10 a.m.-12 p.m.) can be heard on the air daily.

The Flagship: CBS analyst Brian Jones previews Texas' upcoming season Aug 23, 2021
    Show notes

Jones says he's frustrated with the lack of player development at Texas the past decade and hopes Sarkisian and Co. can do something about it.

Jones was in Austin during spring football and said, "From the janitors to the athletic director - to a man - they said there was a sense of urgency and discipline."

Jones said Sarkisian's track record of selecting starting quarterbacks and developing them should give Texas fans comfort as Sark prepares to pick either Hudson Card or Casey Thompson to start at QB for the Longhorns.

Count Jones among those who believe sophomore Bijan Robinson is the next big thing at running back for Texas.

On the defensive side of the ball, Jones said someone needs to step up at his former position (linebacker), but has confidence in Sarkisian's defensive staff as well as the talent up front.

Jones has some bold predictions for the 2021 season, including his selection of a team other than Oklahoma to win the Big 12. (Jones also says to watch out for Texas A&M as a possible College Football Playoff team.)

Jones also shares his thoughts on Texas' looming move to the SEC and how "the target on the Longhorns just got larger."

Texas fans won’t want to miss this week’s interview edition of The Flagship Podcast.
