millennial, MSTRMND. - EP Nov 21, 2019

Show notes

“millennial, MSTRMND.” was recorded and structured to play like a vinyl EP. In the era of “Soundcloud,” rap; millennials are dominating the hip-hop scene with their ability to incorporate a vast range of pop culture references in their lyrics and production alike. This EP utilizes samples from the silver screen, television, interviews, news clips, commercials, classic songs, and more… The concept and visuals for this EP were conceived to pay homage to Frank Ocean’s prolific mixtape “nostalgia, ULTRA.” The samples you will hear on this EP are nods to some of my personal “favorites.” Regardless of whether you are a Millennial, Gen Y, Gen X, or a Baby Boomer there is probably something here for you to enjoy... I hope you do! – Millennial Mastermind

Track Description:

Millennial Mastermind
- “Millennial Mastermind” sets the tone of the vinyl EP esthetic
  - Sample: “Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd” (self-arranged)
- Instrumental Credit: Millennial Mastermind (self-composed & arranged)
TangerineZ
- “TangerineZ” is a play on the phrase “tangerine Z.” This is a direct allusion to the cover art as the car pictured is an orange 1974 Datsun 260z.
- Sample: “1974 Datsun 260z Commercial, uploaded by XenonZcar” (self-arranged)
- Instrumental Credit: ii / Godzay Katana
Old Latrobe
- “Old Latrobe” a reference to Millennial Mastermind’s undying love for Rolling Rock lager. Rolling Rock is brewed in Latrobe, PA., thus coining the phrase “old latrobe.” This instrumental also utilizes a sample from the ever entertaining, legendary wrestler Ric Flair.
  - Sample: Rick Flair audio - already integrated into the instrumental
  - Instrumental Credit: PREMISE On The BEAT
Turkish Delight
- “One of my favorite tracks I’ve ever recorded” – Millennial Mastermind
- This track addresses how sometimes in life you need to “walk through the darkness to see the light” all the while making the best out of what life gives. It also deals with feelings of self-doubt, confidence and perseverance.
  - Sample: Shaq interview audio(self-arranged)
  - Instrumental Credit: yungdzaa
Sorry Mom
- “I would hate to have my mom hear the first lines of this interlude. . . so I titled it ‘Sorry Mom.’” – Millennial Mastermind

BTB ft. Astroʞid

  - Sample(s): “Gorilla Killed After Child Falls Into Zoo Habitat” ABC News, Audio from “Jason Bourne.” (self-arranged)
  - Instrumental Credit: Mathias Tyner x Div
Bandit
- “The decision to utilize the ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ sample came after I wrote the ‘Burt Reynolds, bad bitch, Trans Am, skirt out’ line. Smokey and the Bandit was one of my favorite movies growing up. A lot like Burt Reynolds in the movie this track is just me showing off.” – Millennial Mastermind
  - Sample: “Smokey and the Bandit” audio (self-arranged)
  - Instrumental Credit: ii / Godzay Katana
HLH Interlude
- This is a bridge into the following track titled: “F*ck Cyclists.” The Hooks, Lines, & Hip Hop host(s), spoof their own acronym “HLH,” for Hooks, Lines, and Hip Hop as “HLH,” for Hakeem’s Laughing Hour.” Hear Hakeem try out his comedy bit about how much he hates cyclist…enjoy!
  - Instrumental Credit: RO$$
F*ck Cyclists
- “This track was the second track recorded for the EP. I was in the studio trying to tie the whole track together, racking my brain on what to do with the ‘dead-space’. While struggling with this, I was browsing through Snapchat when I stumbled upon Hakeem ranting about cyclists on the road. That’s when it hit me! From there rest of the concept just sort of fell right into place.” – Millennial Mastermind
- Enjoy this satire of the current soundscape of hip-hop in 2019.
  - Sample(s): Hakeem’s Snapchat audio, “Family Guy” audio (self-arranged)
  - Instrumental Credit: YZ
tuC RMSA//ASMR Cut
- “This is one of the most personal and direct tracks I have ever made. Sorry, not sorry!” – Millennial Mastermind
- The track is titled “tuC RMSA//ASMR Cut” due to the ASMR elements incorporated into the track. It also discussed how “disposable” some friendships truly are.
  - Sample(s): Donald Trump campaign audio, Young Thug’s Big Boi interview audio, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” The Animals (self-arranged)
  - Instrumental Credit: Mizzy Mauri
