Honcho Campout’s Camp Cast — Music
Honcho Campout’s Camp Cast

What does queer raving on 250 acres of private land in the heart of the red-pilled Appalachia woods sound like? From the rigging of speaker systems to taking naked group showers, “Camp Cast” is a five-part audio series narrating the beautiful chaos of one of America’s most beloved weeklong LGBTQ+ music festivals. Threaded within field recordings of the surrounding wildlife and dusty, bass-heavy dance floors, the series unpacks what it means to be queer in nature and explores all that surfaces in the rugged outdoors for systemically policed bodies.

Episode 01: Rave Chaos Aug 05, 2024

Show notes

What is ‘rave chaos’ and why is it one of the necessary ingredients to make a truly great gathering? And what possibly could America’s largest Christian faith music festivals have in common with a ‘gay techno camping festival in the woods’? In this episode, the producers of the Honcho Campout, a nearly decade-running queer psychedelic forest rave in the Appalachia, reconnect with their childhood memories in nature. We learn how the elements of unpredictability, tribe, and a childlike sense of adventure have fortified this urban party scene for a return to the great outdoors.
