    Free Online Curriculum

    324: Free Online Curriculum

In this episode, Meryl shares strategies and specific resources for stretching your homeschool budget by leveraging high-quality free curriculum. You’ll hear about four “all-in-one” programs, dozens of subject-specific tools, how to snag freebies from vendors, and tips for DIYing your own courses with AI assistance.

    1. “All-in-One” Homeschool Curricula

These comprehensive platforms give you daily lesson plans for multiple grades and subjects—often covering 80–90% of what you need.

    • Easy Peasy All-in-One Homeschool (grades 8–12; Christian worldview, but easily adapted)

    • Khan Academy (beyond math: science, history, arts; best as a supplement)

    • Ambleside Online (Charlotte Mason style; public-domain “living books”; year-based levels)

    • CK-12 Foundation (flexible “Flexbooks” in math, science, social studies, electives; built-in videos, quizzes, AI practice)

    2. Subject-Specific Free Resources

If you need only one or two subjects, pick and choose from these specialized platforms:

    • Civics & Government: iCivics (interactive games & lessons)

    • STEM & Finance: EverFi (STEM, history, health, personal finance)

    • Coding: Code.org (full K–12 computer science courses)

    • Personal Finance: Next Gen Personal Finance (games, interactives)

    • Foreign Language: Duolingo (supplement), Mango Languages (library-provided)

    3. Vendor “Freebies” in Exchange for Email

Many curriculum publishers offer sample unit studies or mini-courses free when you subscribe:

    • FundaFunda Academy – “States of Matter” unit study (grades 4–8)

    • PeanutButterFish Lessons – weekly free unit studies for younger ages

    • Music in Our Homeschool – free music-appreciation lessons

    • Literary Adventures for Kids – curated reading lists by grade

    • Seven Sisters Homeschool – three years of free high-school English outlines

Tip: Use a spreadsheet or digital folder system (see Ep. 219) to track all your downloads, logins, and newsletter freebies.

    4. DIY Curriculum with AI Assistance

When you can’t find exactly what you need, build your own:

    1. Gather source materials: library books, YouTube Crash Course videos, open educational resources.

    2. Leverage AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) to generate:

      • Lesson outlines

      • Comprehension questions & quizzes

      • Suggested projects & hands-on activities

      • Grading rubrics and schedules

    3. Customize by age, credit requirements, and learning style.

    Homeschool Children with Learning Challenges

322 : Online help for homeschool children with learning challenges

    Episode Summary:

In this episode, Meryl chats with Krisa Wynn about Homeschool Heroes, an online platform designed to support homeschool families with children who have learning challenges — or as they call them, “unique learners.” Krisa shares how the platform provides free and paid resources, community groups, learning assessments, consultations, and quarterly day-off events for homeschoolers.

Homeschool Heroes is an expansion of the original SPED Homeschool nonprofit, but now offers even more ways to connect, support, and empower homeschool families, including those dealing with ADHD, autism, trauma, and other special circumstances.

Meryl and Krisa also discuss how Homeschool Heroes offers a better alternative to Facebook groups by avoiding algorithm issues, and allowing real peer-to-peer connection and expert access.

Meryl shares how FundaFunda Academy (the show sponsor) also supports students with learning challenges through flexible, tech-integrated, asynchronous online classes.

    What You’ll Learn About:

    • What Homeschool Heroes is and how it grew from SPED Homeschool

    • Free resources available, including downloads for curriculum enrichment and high school support

    • How the community groups work — even for free subscribers — and why they offer a better experience than Facebook groups

    • The tagging system that helps homeschoolers find exactly the resources they need

    • The Mindprint Learning cognitive assessment tool for identifying strengths and learning needs

    • The quarterly “Homeschool Parent Day Off” events (next event: May 8, 2025)

    • One-on-one consultation services for personalized homeschool help
