    Google's free applied digital skills lessons

    148: Google’s Free Applied Digital Skills Lessons

    I first learned about Google’s Free Applied Digital Skills lessons from Coach Victor Hicks in an interview he did on the 10 Minute Teacher podcast. Listen to it to hear he how has used these lessons with students.

    You can find all the lessons here (currently 160 of them!)

    You can filter the list of lessons by age, topic, and tool

    The results of a search can be sorted by popular, recent, duration, alphabetical

    You can either set it up as a teacher with a classroom (or multiple classrooms) and assign your children specific lessons, or you just tell your children which individual lessons to do without a classroom setup.

    There are so many options to choose from which makes this is an ideal way to help your children learn more tech skills that will be useful in college and the workplace. You can learn along with your kids! The videos are short and explain everything really well.

    2. Explore.org and other live webcams to learn about animals
    3. Find videos on Youtube and TikTok to learn about what it is like to live in other parts of the world.
    4. Wander through a city’s streets with Streetview in Google maps
    5. Immerse yourself in an experience using VR (Google Expeditions, 360-degree Youtube video example: Clouds over Sidra about a refugee camp on the Within app.
    6. Discover the history around you with the Clio app

    Challenging Yourself as a Homeschool Mom

    146: 4 Ways Challenging Yourself as a Homeschooling Mom Leads to Leveling Up Your Homeschooling Life

    In this episode, guest Sarah Miller-Snyder shares 4 ways challenging yourself as a homeschool mom leads to leveling up your homeschool.

    Sarah has been a guest on the podcast twice before. She has shared about Podcasts for hhomeschool families and Podcasts for kids of all ages, so be sure to listen to those if you haven’t already.

    Sarah has her own podcast, The Online School Mom. I am her guest on the episode “Online electives to boost your child’s education“.

    You can find the rest of what Sarah offers at Online School Mom and you can join her Facebook group Online School Mom.

    Her daughter Addie talked about how she started an Etsy shop in the summer series on Techie Teens.

    Listen to the episode to hear all the challenges Sarah took on this past year – most of them related to technology in some way!!

    The 4 Ways These Challenges Benefited Their Family

    1. The kids copied their mom
    2. Doing less for her kids led to them helping out more
    3. They all learned to accept mistakes and ‘failure’.
    4. She gained more energy and a better ‘vibe’ which positively affected the home environment.

    Main takeaway: Don’t wait until you are ready to try things or go for a goal; the only way to build confidence is to do things.

    Technology and the Middle School Years

    145: Technology and the Middle School Years

    In this episode we look at technology and the middle school years from two different perspectives:

    1. How much technology is too much?

    The first topic I discuss is video gaming. The article I reference is here.
    The Instagram account to look at is @juliebravewriter. Click on “Video Games” under highlights in Stories.

    The second topic is Social Media. The website I reference is Social Media Test Drive. I also mention a previous podcast episode: Homeschooling Digital Natives

    2. How much technology is too little?

    Make sure they know the basics they will need for high school. FundaFunda Academy teaches a Computer Applications class that will prepare them well.

    Let them take at least one online class in middle school. If you want an inexpensive self-paced option, look at FundaFunda’s web-based unit studies.

    How to find balance in tech usage with middle schoolers?

    I give ideas on different approaches. You are invited to join the Homeschooling Middle School Facebook Group to talk about this and other issues with homeschool parents of middle schoolers.

    Asynchronous Vs Synchronous Online Classes

    143: Asynchronous vs Synchronous Online Classes

    In this episode, we take a look at asynchronous vs synchronous online classes and consider which might be a better fit for your family.

    Synchronous Classes

    * Live class – Zoom / Google Meet
    * Interaction? Passive? Discussion?
    * Homework outside of class?
    * Specific day/time
    * If you miss a class is it recorded?

    Asynchronous Classes

    * Not live – but could take different formats
    * Self-paced or deadlines?
    * Videos + quizzes or more?
    * Graded or not?
    * Interaction with teacher? other students?

    Show sponsor, FundaFunda Academy– provides classes that are asynchronous with deadlines and graded.

    You can find FundaFunda’s demo classroom here.

    Synchronous classes – good for students who do better in a classroom situation and need the discipline of having to show up to class

    Asynchronous classes – good for students needing a flexible schedule and for students who like to work at their own pace

    Special offer for August 2021:
