Homeschooling IRL | Parenting & homeschooling — unfiltered.

Homeschooling in real life — the messy, funny, faith-filled truth about raising and teaching your kids. Hosts Fletch and Kendra Fletcher pull back the curtain on what homeschooling and parenting actually look like day to day: the wins, the meltdowns, the questions that keep you up at night, and the conversations most parents are afraid to have out loud. Every episode brings honest talk, plenty of laughs, and practical encouragement — often with a favorite guest — on everything from curriculum and burnout to marriage, faith, and the hard stuff: talking to your kids about sex, screens, growing up, and keeping your sanity along the way. If you’re homeschooling from a Christian worldview and you’re tired of the highlight reel, pull up a chair. You’re among friends who get it. Honest, evergreen conversations for every season of the homeschool journey. Part of the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

Why The Rise In African American Homeschooling, Part 2 – HIRL Episode 54 Jun 08, 2015
    Show notes

Free homeschool podcast discussing the rise in African American Homeschooling in America. This is the second installment in our two-part series, Why the Rise in African American Homeschooling? In part one we sat down for a rich discussion with Dr. Ama Mazama to discuss the issues of racism in our school system and why so many African American families were choosing to leave the public school system to begin homeschooling.

Like us, many of our listeners responded to that first episode by telling us that their thoughts were really challenged on the hidden ways racism continues to thrive in the public school system and to some extent in the homeschool movement.

Now in this second part, we continue the discussion with homeschooling mom Belinda Bullard. Belinda shares with us some of the struggles she experienced when she decided to educate her children from home. She also shares her story of finding very limited options with Christian homeschooling curriculum and how she responded by creating her own inclusive curriculum that celebrates the African American heritage and aims to strengthen and empower the African American student and their family.

Once again, even if you are not an African American parent, we want to encourage our listeners to take part in this conversation. We have found that the reality of racism can even be found lurking in the shadows of Christian homeschooling. It is our hope that this podcast can help the discussion and be one step in trying to be a part of the solution to the reality of racism and inequality everywhere.

Why The Rise In African American Homeschooling, Part 1 – HIRL Episode 52 May 25, 2015
    Show notes

HIRL-Episode-52Last month, Fletch read an interesting article in The Washington Post called, Racism in Schools is Pushing More Black Families to Homeschool Their Children. The title alone was enough to get him interested, but in the article the writer discussed why there has been such a sharp rise in African American Homeschooling. We thought this was a good discussion to have with our listeners, so we pursued the author for an interview.

Dr. Ama Mazama, professor of African American Studies at Temple University and homeschooling parent, joins us for an important discussion. In our interview, Professor Mazama discusses her research and shares with us why she believes there has been a distinct rise in homeschooling among black families.

You will want to listen to this interview and join us as we explore the questions and challenges that this discussion creates.

How The Gospel Makes Us Unoffendable – HIRL Episode 50 May 11, 2015
    Show notes

1431314109400What if someone told you that you had no right to be angry? What if you could live a life that was defined as unoffendable? What would it look like to not be offended by the things people say and do, or by the way they treat you? And what if you could smile and relax, knowing that God has covered every offense with his inexhaustible love for you?

Homeschoolers, let’s face it. We are quick to be offended. Whether it’s outsiders who watch us and don’t like our educational choices or fellow homeschoolers who challenge our methods or curriculum, we can often take offense at anyone who questions what we are doing. What would your life look like if you were unoffendable?

On this episode of HomeschoolingIRL, we’re talking with radio host Brant Hansen about his new book, Unoffendable: How Just One Change Can Make All of Life Better. When the gospel gets involved, it really is your best life, forever.

Homeschooling With Special Needs – HIRL Episode 49 Apr 27, 2015
Show notes Homeschooling with Special Needs — Homeschool Help Hub | Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network

If you’re homeschooling a child with special needs — or wondering whether you can — here is the truth: you can do this, and your child may well do better at home than anywhere else. No one loves your child like you do, no one is more motivated to help them flourish, and no classroom can match the individual attention you can give at your own kitchen table.

Why homeschooling works so well for special needs

A traditional classroom is built for the middle. A child who learns differently spends the day being pulled toward a pace that doesn’t fit — too fast in some things, too slow in others. At home you flip that entirely. You can teach to your child’s actual level in every subject, follow their interests, build the day around their best hours, weave therapy and movement right into learning, and remove the anxiety of being compared to twenty-five peers. You control the environment: the noise, the lighting, the transitions, the breaks.

You don’t have to be an expert

Many parents freeze at the word “special needs,” certain they’re unqualified. You don’t need a special-education degree. You need to understand your one child, gather a few good tools and people, and take it one skill at a time. You already know your child better than any specialist ever will.

    Getting started

You don’t need a formal diagnosis or an IEP to homeschool — but if your child already has evaluations, keep those records; they help you choose curriculum and access services. Start by finding your child’s real baseline in each subject rather than their grade label, then set small, reachable goals. Progress for a special-needs learner is measured in inches, and every inch counts.

    Curriculum, methods & support

Adapt freely: shorten lessons, teach multisensory, use audiobooks and hands-on materials, and give life skills the same weight as academics. Then build your team — a special-needs-friendly co-op, other parents walking the same road, and any therapists or online classes that lighten the load. Don’t forget the rest of the family: siblings need attention too, and you need rest and encouragement to keep pouring out.

Your child is not behind — they’re on their own path

There are no second-class homeschoolers. Your child was made on purpose, with gifts the world needs. Homeschooling lets you nurture those gifts at exactly the pace they were designed for.

1428878305523How important is it for us to practice transparent parenting with our children? What should you do when your children ask you questions that are just too personal or too painful to answer? If we do practice transparency, will our kids simply follow our example?

In this episode, we sit down with marriage and family therapist, Chris Oneth, to discuss the topic of transparency in our parenting. We answer these questions and many more as we talk through this very difficult topic.

Join us as we discuss the importance of being honest with our kids and share techniques for walking into the difficult conversations. Show notes

HIRL-Episode-45On the HomeschoolingIRL podcast, we have spent 44 episodes telling stories of other homeschooling families. We continue to share one major theme: Live in the gospel and stop shifting your hope onto the world or religion. On this episode, we shift gears and finally share our own story of losing our religion and our recovery from “gospel amnesia.”

From that hot summer morning in the summer of 2008, when we found our 7-week-old baby in a coma, we share the events that led to a massive overhaul in our marriage, our parenting, and ultimately, our faith in Christ. That sickly baby boy was just the beginning; there would be harder trials and far more refining ahead.

Does your own faith feels stagnant or does the Christian life seem joyless? Join us as we share what unlocked the self-made prison doors and caused us to lose our religion but find a deeper, more glorious faith in the power of the cross!
