Joerg Rieger: the End of Religion & Business as Usual Mar 17, 2021
    Show notes

Joerg Rieger is Distinguished Professor of Theology and the Cal Turner Chancellor’s Chair of Wesleyan Studies. He is also the founding director of the Wendland-Cook Program in Religion and Justice.

For more than two decades he has worked to bring together theology and the struggles for justice and liberation that mark our age. His work addresses the relation of theology and public life, reflecting on the misuse of power in religion, politics, and economics. His main interest is in developments and movements that bring about change and in the positive contributions of religion and theology. His constructive work in theology draws on a wide range of historical and contemporary traditions, with a concern for manifestations of the divine in the pressures of everyday life.

On John Polkinghorne: Creation, Prayer, Miracles, and Time Mar 13, 2021
    Show notes

"John Polkinghorne said his being a physicist-priest might strike some like being a vegetarian-butcher. But in his writings, speaking, teaching, and ministry, he showed one could affirm the best of both science and theology. John died on March 9, 2021. I was privileged to work with him on several projects, including a book we called The Polkinghorne Reader. It included what he thought was the best excerpts from his various books. Tripp and I talked about his influential work as an open theist in the science-and-religion dialogue. Enjoy as we explore his ground-breaking ideas!" - Thomas Jay Oord

Douglas Ottati joins the podcast for his 5th visit to discuss his new book, A Theology for the Twenty-First Century. This is one of the most significant Protestant Systematic Theologies in years. Chase Tibbs: Why Go Christian Socialist? Mar 03, 2021
    Show notes

This is a special crossover episode with Chase Tibbs from the Faith and Capital podcast. In our conversation, Chase gives 5 reasons to go 'Christian Socialist.' Most theology nerds know that the overwhelming majority of theologians in the 2oth century were socialists. Barth, Tillich, Niebuhr, Guiterrez and more were all committed Christian socialists, and yet today, many Christians wrongly assume the two are incompatible. I doubt everyone is going to be persuaded, but I hope more people will come to see how Chase's faith deeply informs his politics.

OHHH Chase's pod is celebrating its 2nd birthday. If you haven't listened to it before and are interested in a show inviting Christians to participate in the struggle for emancipation, then give it a listen.
