UnforMETable, Episode 15: Joel Youngblood Jul 09, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past

With the All-Star Break upon us, Rob Wolff travels back to take a look at the Mets tenure—and unlikely All-Star selection—of outfielder/super-utility player Joel Youngblood.

Youngblood arrived in New York on an infamous day in Mets’ history—June 15, 1977—in a smaller trade on the day the Midnight Massacre saw Tom Seaver depart Flushing. Pegged as a utility player, Youngblood became a solid contributor for the Mets—primarily as an outfielder—as he struggled to shed his image as a supersub.

Youngblood was the Mets’ lone All-Star representative in 1981 before making baseball history on August 4, 1982 thanks to the unique timing of his trade from the Mets to the Montreal Expos.

As always, you can listen or subscribe to this and all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! And you can find us on the Stitcher app, or listen wherever you get podcasts.

If you’ve got an idea for a player to be featured on UnforMETable, let us know in the comments.

Make sure to follow Rob on Twitter (@WolffRR), and you can now follow the show, too (@unformetable). Tune in next week for another tale from the Mets’ past.

This week, Steve and Lukas quickly break down the surprising signing of thirteenth round draft pick Blaine McIntosh.

What can be done to improve the conditions these young men have to deal with?

    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we take a little break from podcasting for the Fourth of July holiday. We hope all of our wonderful listeners enjoy the break as well.

Instead of a regular podcast, we will be sharing our thoughts on our favorite episodes so far. We have come a long way since our first episode. We interviewed a couple of amazing guests, Linda screams with regular frequency, Maggie coined the phrase “group dong,” and Allison is a saint for trying to keep us on track. We also hope we shined a light on subjects that too frequently get left in the dark.

We have had a lot of fun recording despite the fact the Mets drive us crazy, but we would love to hear from you about your favorite episode as well. Email or tweet us your favorite episode and tell us why it is your favorite. After you hit send, you will be entered to win an awesome and super happy Brandon Nimmo gnome! To be qualified to enter you must be following us on Twitter.

Be sure to follow A Pod of Their Own on Twitter (@apodoftheirown) so you can enter our giveaway. The winner will be announced in two weeks. UnforMETable, Episode 14: Dae Seung-Koo Jul 02, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past

As the Mets prepare to welcome the Yankees to Queens for the second installment of this year’s Subway Series, Rob Wolff travels back to take a look at left-handed reliever Dae Seung-Koo’s brief tenure with the franchise in 2005.

A veteran of many years in the Korean and Japanese leagues, the 35 year-old was brought to New York to serve as a LOOGY, and had never recorded an at-bat in his professional career. But his most memorable moment as a Met would come in the Subway Series in an unbelievable at-bat against future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson—and his daring baserunning thereafter.

A Pod of Their Own, Episode 13: Peak Mets Threat Level Red Jun 26, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we try to wrap our minds around the cavalcade of Mets drama, from the Sunday’s locker room throwdown to leaks about Brodie’s backseat managing to bullpen meltdowns.

For more reading on this circus, check out former Mets beat writer Marc Carig’s takedown of team leadership and the Post’s brutal take on Callaway’s standing as manager.

Next, we look at a related topic: MLB discipline. Both umpires and the league have standards that seem variable and unpredictable and it’s a real problem.

Finally, we wrap things up as we always do with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

And a quick update to an earlier show: the brilliant and talented Dr. Meredith Wills has published a follow-up to her work last year on the difference in the baseballs resulting in the home run surge. It’s a must-read!
