Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past.

Drafted a round before Gary Carter—and out of the same high school as Darryl Strawberry—Ellis Valentine had the type of talent that had people touting him as a future Hall of Famer.

Valentine’s career got off to an impressive start with the Montreal Expos before some combination of injuries, off-field problems and an on-field beanball led to the precipitous downslide of his career at the tender age of 26—and right around the time of his acquisition by the New York Mets.

Hear about Valentine’s fascinating career—including a memorable television appearance—and his impressive post-baseball work.

Amazin' Avenue in Conversation, Episode 8: Noah Syndergaard Aug 29, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to Amazin’ Avenue in Conversation, a new podcast from Amazin’ Avenue where we invite interesting people on the show to talk about themselves, the Mets, and more.

Noah Syndergaard needs no introduction. One of the most electrifying athletes in sports today, Snydergaard is part of the Mets' young rotation that looks to be a dominant force in baseball for years to come. He's also one of the most legitimately funny athletes on social media, something that can be gleaned from following him on Twitter (@noahsyndergaard) and Instagram (@nsydnergaard).

Noah has partnered with Great Clips for their Back to School promotion, which helps underfunded schools throughout the country. On Thursday, September 5, Great Clips and Noah will visit PS 111 Adolph S Ochs in Hell’s Kitchen to hand out school supplies and to deliver a donation of $40,000. The money will go towards a monthly hot meal program for students and families that live in temporary housing as well as to fund extracurricular initiatives such as an after-school drama club and an African-inspired music and dance program.

To help out, download the Great Clips app and make a difference in the lives of kids across the country.

A Pod of Their Own, Episode 21: Big Pete breaks records, the Cubs break hearts, and APOTO gives back Aug 28, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, the Mets are on a roller coaster and we’re along for the ride. Big wins and big losses have dominated, but Big Pete has broken the Mets season home run record and we are so happy for him.

Next, we welcome Sara Sanchez, host of the fantastic Cubs podcast Cuppa Cubbie Blue. We talk rivalries, old and new, how our respective playoff runs feel, and how we cope when our teams are made up of people we can’t cheer for. Sara wrote an emotional must-read about Addison Russell’s return to baseball for Bleed Cubbie Blue earlier this year.

Then, we share our Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

And finally, we wrap things up with a special announcement - we are pledging to donate to the National Domestic Violence Hotline for each home run the Mets hit in the month of September and we want you all to join us! The amount can be small or large, public or private, all that matters is that we support this amazing organization. Follow us on Twitter for more updates and to let us know you’re on board!

UnforMETable, Episode 22: Chico Walker Aug 26, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past.

As the Mets welcome the Cubs to town in a pivotal series with playoff implications, we look back at a utility player who divided the bulk of his major league career between the two franchises—Chico Walker.

Hear about Walker’s extensive time in the minors—including his participation in a game that made professional baseball history. Walker ultimately fought his way to a role on the Chicago bench, but he started and made a notable appearance in a memorable game in Mets’ history in 1986.

Eventually, Walker found his way to the Mets, where he finally received the most playing time in his career—albeit for The Worst Team Money Could Buy.

Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), Episode 20: Hamstrung Aug 22, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), the new/old favorite from Amazin’ Avenue editors Chris McShane and Brian Salvatore.

This week, A Pod ofTheir Own’s Allison McCague sits in with Brian to discuss the injury to Marcus Stroman, and how that affects the team’s playoff hopes.

Next up, we discuss how the players around the fringes have been excelling for the Mets as of late, and compare Joe Panik and Brad Brach to similarly effective 2015 acquisitions.

We round out the episode with the three things we’ve all come to expect from a baseball podcast: hamstring injuries, boner pills, and 90s pop-punk.

    Allison’s Music Pick:

    Green Day - Warning

    Brian’s Music Pick:

Colleen Green - Dude Ranch as Played by Colleen Green

A Pod of Their Own, Episode 20: Wilmer Flores, Backstreet Boys, Kangaroos, and some baseball Aug 21, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we’re pretty jazzed about how well the Mets have been playing, including the starting pitching stepping it up, Amed Rosario continuing to roll, Juan Lagares’ strong week, the solid addition of Joe Panik, the potential returns of Brandon Nimmo and Jed Lowrie, and more. But most of all, we’re excited about Pete Alonso breaking the single-season home run record for an NL rookie.

Next, we expand upon a previous discussion about attempts to expand the game to a younger audience, this time focusing on Major League Baseball’s partnerships with Facebook and YouTube, weighing the pros and cons of broadcasting games on those platforms.

UnforMETable, Episode 21: Mike Jorgensen Aug 20, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past.

With Marcus Stroman, Steven Matz, and Joe Panik on the scene, the current Mets feature an inordinate number of players on the team with New York connections. Today we look back a player the Mets drafted straight out of Francis Lewis High School in Queens in 1966—Mike Jorgensen.

Hear about Jorgensen’s first tour of duty with his hometown club—how he missed out on being a part of the 1969 Miracle Mets, and was traded for to the Expos for Rusty Staub. He enjoyed the best seasons of his career in Montreal, then endured a career—and life—threatening moment in Texas before returning back to the Mets, where he had a couple of memorable moments in the early 80s before finishing his career with the rival Cardinals.
