UnforMETable, Episode 86: Richard Hidalgo [rebroadcast] Jul 05, 2022
    Show notes

Note: Rob is away this week, and so we are rebroadcasting an episode with a tie to today’s date, July 5.

Welcome to UnforMETable, a new show from Amazin’ Avenue that looks back on less heralded, more obscure, but quintessential Mets players from the past.

This week, guest host Brian Salvatore traces the career of former Met Richard Hidalgo. Hildalgo came up with the Astros, had an amazing year in 2000, and a very good year in 2003 before coming over to the Mets in a trade in June of 2004. He hit 21 home runs in the summer of 2004, only to depart the team in the off-season.

Some of the things discussed in this episode: his connection to Bobby Abreau, his son signing with the Marlins, his abandoned ‘field of dreams,’ and the time the dude was shot during a carjacking, but played profession baseball just a few months later.

As always, you can listen or subscribe to this and all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! And you can find us on the Stitcher app, or listen wherever you get podcasts.

And finally, the guys take a look at how the system’s top prospects have done with one month in the books and highlight some non-top-25 players who have risen to the occasion.

A Pod of Their Own, Episode 131: Tin foil hats off Jun 29, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we begin by emphasizing that the Mets cannot get out of the month of June fast enough. The Astros seem to have the Mets’ number, but they will at least escape June with a winning record, although a much smaller NL East lead than they had before.

We also try not to put on our tin foil hats about Max Scherzer, whose rehab start was delayed. We discuss the return of other injured Mets, like Colin Holderman and James McCann.

We also discuss the case for the Mets’ “fringe” All-Stars, of which there are quite a few!

Next, we cover various odds and ends throughout the league. We talk about baseball’s new uniform “muddy” ball technique, the brawl between the Mariners and the Angels, the Mets sitting down with the Advocates for Minor Leaguers, and more.

Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

You can listen or subscribe to all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! And you can find us on the Stitcher app, Spotify, or listen wherever you get podcasts.

You can follow A Pod of Their Own on Twitter (@apodoftheirown) and you can also follow our co-hosts on Twitter: Allison McCague (@PetitePhD), Maggie Wiggin (@maggie162), and Linda Surovich (@LindaSurovich). And you can find Kellyanne Healey in the Amazin’ Avenue comments (LaRomaBella). You can also email the show at aa.apodoftheirown@gmail.com.

Look for A Pod of Their Own in your feeds every Wednesday and don’t forget: there’s no crying in podcasting!

UnforMETable, Episode 85: Steve Renko Jun 28, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past.

A three-sport star at the University of Kansas, Steve Renko would choose the baseball path over the dangers of football. Drafted by the Mets as a pitcher/outfielder, he would start out as a hitting prospect before transitioning to pitching.

Renko would begin to zip through the minors as a pitching prospect, catching the eye and the favor of Gil Hodges. However, before he could make his debut in Queens for an up-and-coming 1969 Mets team, Renko would become a key piece in a deadline deal which would bring in future World Series MVP Donn Clendenon.

From Complex To Queens, Episode 174: One potential future Jun 27, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to From Complex to Queens, the Amazin’ Avenue podcast focusing on the Mets’ minor league system.

The Cyclone opened on this date in 1927, so the guys discuss it in Promote, Extend, Trade...kinda.

Next, Steve, Ken, and Thomas discusses a fairly in-depth mock draft done by the good people at Baseball America. Baseball America mocked shortstop Cole Young and right-handed pitcher Gabriel Hughes to the Mets in the first round and right-handed pitcher Ben Joyce in the second round. How does that sound to you?

After, the team give updates on the Syracuse Mets, Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Brooklyn Cyclones, St. Lucie Mets, and Florida Complex League Mets.

Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), Episode 100: Hapless in Houston Jun 23, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), the new/old favorite from Amazin’ Avenue editors Chris McShane and Brian Salvatore.

While the Mets looked solid against the Marlins over the weekend, the two-game series in Houston was not exactly pretty. Now, small sample size, injuries, and the backend of a hurt rotation all played a part in this, and Brian and Chris recognize this. Still, discussions of trade deadline acquisitions have begun.

    Chris’s Music Pick:

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Nonagon Infinity

    Brian’s Music Pick:

    Ween - The Mollusk

A Pod of Their Own, Episode 130: A future with more Mark Canhas Jun 22, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we begin by discussing the updates on various injured Mets and the impending return of Max Scherzer to the rotation. We also talk about the 13-pitcher roster rule coming into effect and Tommy Hunter’s return to the major leagues as the feel-good Mets story this week.

Next, we talk about Pride Night at Citi Field, which Grace Carbone recently wrote about in a fantastic piece that we recommend you read. In particular, we discuss the allyship Mark Canha and Taijuan Walker showed with their full embrace of Pride and how refreshing that was to see. We also point to Megan Rapinoe as another example of what LGBTQ+ allyship looks like in sports.

We also discuss the new “no politics” policy being implemented at The Athletic.

Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

Amazin' Avenue in Conversation, Episode 31: Francisco Lindor and Brock Porter Jun 21, 2022
    Show notes

Last week, Francisco Lindor virtually surprised Clemson commit Brock Porter of St. Mary’s Preparatory School with the 2021-22 Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award. We had the chance to chat with both Francisco and Brock, and we are thrilled to bring those conversations to you.

UnforMETable, Episode 84: Jim Hickman Jun 21, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the past.

Plucked from the Cardinals’ organization in the expansion draft, Jim Hickman would finally get an opportunity in the majors with New York’s brand new expansion franchise in 1962.

Hickman would eventually become a regular for New York and an early source of some power—which he would flash in becoming the first Met to hit for the cycle, as well as the first Met to hit three home runs in one game.

Hickman would be the last original Met to leave the team, eventually having some of his best individual seasons with the Chicago Cubs—but being denied a chance at the postseason when his former team would chase down the Cubs in 1969.
