    History of the Papacy Podcast

This show will detail the biographies and interesting facts of the Papacy of Rome. It will start in the beginning, but will not go straight through. There will be many side tracks and detours along the way. We will investigate the backstreets of the Papacy where the tour normally doesn’t go. Support this show

119.4: When Church, State and Estates Collide, The Papacy and French Revolution Jul 29, 2022
    Show notes

Will and I will look at the French Revolution and what role the Church had in the Revolution. This is a more complicated topic that it appears. There was fabulously wealthy clergy and poor clergy. There was up and coming clergy and there were entrenched clergy. Each of these groups had their own incentives and goals. Let’s explore them.

119.2: The Papacy Down and Almost Out Jul 15, 2022

The papacy almost wasn’t. In the last years of the 18th century, the entire idea of the Popes of Rome as leaders of the Roman Catholic Church was down to its very last chip and was a close as you could possibly get to walking away from the table.

•History of the Papacy/Diptychs Fun Fact – About a 1,000 years before what we are going to talk about in today’s episode. There was a major argument in the church whether the laity should participate along side the clergy of Rome in electing a new pope. For a time, it was ruled that there should be universal suffrage for papal elections. By universal suffrage, I mean only the nobility and the power of papal elections would revert back to only the clergy in not too long, but one step forward, right?

119.1: Introduction to the Beginning of the End Jul 08, 2022
    Show notes

This episode is the beginning of the end. The end of the Middle Ages that is. Every scholar arranges the historical phases or eras of the papacy in slightly different ways. I’m no scholar, but I want to get in the game anyway. I made a case for the Papacy having an incredibly long phase that lasted from 752 to 1878. In this series we are going to explore why that Middle Ages era definitively ended in 1878.
