119.28: God Is Dead, How Friedrich Nietzsche and the Catholic Church Clashed Over Modernity Feb 24, 2023

Show notes

In this episode of the Civil War Center Podcast, host Andy Lucien delves into the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, specifically his critiques of Christianity and the Catholic Church, and how they relate to his Nietzschean Framework. Andy also compares Nietzsche's world view to that of Fyodor Dostoyevsky. First, Andy provides a brief background on Nietzsche, explaining his rejection of traditional morality and his belief in the concept of the "Übermensch," or Superman. Andy then focuses on Nietzsche's critiques of the Catholic Church and Christianity, discussing his famous statement that "God is dead" and how he believed that the Church's focus on morality limited individual potential. Next, Andy explains the Nietzschean Framework, which emphasizes individualism, self-creation, and the pursuit of power. He discusses how this framework differs from traditional morality and how it can be applied to modern life. Finally, Andy compares Nietzsche's world view to that of Dostoyevsky. While Nietzsche rejected traditional morality and focused on the individual, Dostoyevsky emphasized the importance of religion and community. Andy discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each philosophy and how they relate to the human experience. #Nietzsche #CatholicChurch #NietzscheanFramework #Dostoyevsky #Philosophy #Individualism #Übermensch #Superman #Morality #Religion #Community #CivilWarCenterPodcast Today’s Guest: Andy Lucien of the Civil War Center Podcast https://thecivilwarcenter.com/ You can learn more about the History of Papacy and subscribe at all these great places: http://atozhistorypage.com/ https://www.historyofthepapacypodcast.com email: steve@atozhistorypage.com https://www.patreon.com/historyofthepapacy parthenonpodcast.com https://www.gettr.com/user/atozhistory Beyond the Big Screen: Beyondthebigscreen.com The History of the Papacy on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6DO2leym3kizBHW0ZWl-nA Get Your History of the Papacy Podcast Products Here: https://www.atozhistorypage.com/products Help out the show by ordering these books from Amazon! https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1MUPNYEU65NTF Music Provided by: "Sonatina in C Minor" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Funeral March for Brass" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "String Impromptu Number 1" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Intended Force" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Agnus Dei X - Bitter Suite Kevin MacLeaod (incomptech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License

119.27: Finishing The Risorgimento: Italy Tries to Create an Empire and Fails Feb 17, 2023

Show notes

Today we're continuing to discuss a pivotal moment in Italian history: the Risorgimento. This was a period of political and social revolution that ultimately led to the unification of Italy as a single nation-state. One event that occurred during the Risorgimento was Italy's attempt to build an empire in Ethiopia. In 1896, Italy invaded Ethiopia in an effort to expand its territory and influence, but they were met with fierce resistance and ultimately suffered a devastating defeat. This was a major blow to Italy's imperial ambitions and marked the end of their attempts to colonize Ethiopia. Despite this setback, Italy continued to try and build an empire, but they were met with repeated failure. These attempts were marked by military defeats and diplomatic failures, which ultimately led to the country's decline as a major power. The Risorgimento was an important period in Italian history that led to the country's unification, but it also highlighted Italy's failed attempts to build an empire. 119.25: Pizza, Pinocchio and the Papacy: Finding the Very Best and Very Worst of Italy Feb 03, 2023

Show notes

Today we will be discussing the Risorgimento, the best and worst ideologies in Italy, Pinocchio as a metaphor for Italian unification, and of course, pizza. The Risorgimento was a period of political and social upheaval in Italy that lasted from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. The movement aimed to unite the various states and regions of Italy into one unified nation. This period saw the rise of many notable figures such as Giuseppe Garibaldi and Camillo di Cavour, who played a crucial role in the unification of Italy. When it comes to ideologies in Italy, there have been both positive and negative influences on the country's history. On the positive side, the liberal and democratic ideals that emerged during the Risorgimento have had a lasting impact on Italian society and politics. On the negative side, the rise of fascism under Benito Mussolini in the early 20th century had a devastating impact on the country and its people. Pinocchio, the beloved children's story written by Carlo Collodi, can also be seen as a metaphor for the Italian unification. The character's journey from a wooden puppet to a real boy can be seen as a metaphor for the transformation of Italy from a collection of separate states to a unified nation. And last but not least, let's talk about pizza. Italy's most famous export, pizza is a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions. Whether you're a fan of traditional Margherita or a more unconventional topping, there's a pizza for everyone. #Risorgimento #ItalianUnification #Pinocchio #Pizza #ItalianCulture Today’s Guest: Joseph Pascone, Host of Turning Tides Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/turning-tides/id1653316649 You can learn more about the History of Papacy and subscribe at all these great places: http://atozhistorypage.com/ https://www.historyofthepapacypodcast.com email: steve@atozhistorypage.com https://www.patreon.com/historyofthepapacy parthenonpodcast.com https://www.gettr.com/user/atozhistory Beyond the Big Screen: Beyondthebigscreen.com The History of the Papacy on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6DO2leym3kizBHW0ZWl-nA Get Your History of the Papacy Podcast Products Here: https://www.atozhistorypage.com/products Help out the show by ordering these books from Amazon! https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1MUPNYEU65NTF Music Provided by: "Sonatina in C Minor" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Funeral March for Brass" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "String Impromptu Number 1" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Intended Force" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Agnus Dei X - Bitter Suite Kevin MacLeaod (incomptech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License
