    527. Purple Heart Day Aug 07, 2026
    Show notes

August 7 is observed every year as National Purple Heart Day, marking the day in 1782 when General George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit. The original badge was a purple cloth heart used during the Revolutionary War. It is the oldest military decoration still given to U.S. service members today. General Douglas MacArthur revived the award in 1932 on Washington's 200th birthday as the modern Purple Heart, which honors the brave U.S. service members who were wounded or killed in combat while serving in the military. Let’s commemorate this prestigious award with the story of the Revolutionary Battle of Monmouth Courthouse which was fought on June 28, 1778, in New Jersey between Washington’s Continental Army and British Regulars.

    Show notes

In July 1945, the USA warned Japan of a powerful new weapon, but the Island nation ignored the many warnings—refusing to surrender. The American military dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9), bringing about the end of World War II (1939-45), thereby potentially saving the lives of hundreds of thousands of American military personnel, as well as Japanese soldiers and civilians over the course of a drawn out invasion of the Japanese islands.

CODEX 8.10 American Crisis by Thomas Paine Aug 04, 2026
    Show notes

A series of 16 influential political pamphlets published between 1776 and 1783 during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) titled The American Crisis, or simply The Crisis, by eighteenth-century Enlightenment philosopher and author Thomas Paine — an Englishman living in the colonies who signed his essays anonymously as "Common Sense," the title of his earlier influential work. Each essay, bolstered the morale of the American colonists to fight hard for their independence, appealed to the English to support the colonist's cause, clarified the issues at stake, and denounced any type of negotiated peace. The essays were gathered into one volume in 1882, showcasing the iconic opening line: "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman."
