    History Matters

One thing historians love is a good drink…. and drinking alone isn’t fun. Happy hour is the best hour, even if you are sippin’ cold water in a beautiful glass. If you are under 21, chilled apple juice is always tasty.

    Sundown Towns Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

Have you ever heard of a 'sundown' town? They hold a dark place in American history. I also discuss my visit to the historic site of the Claremont Hotel, which is on the corner of 7th Ave. and Island in downtown San Diego. The footage of that is on my Instagram, @natalyehistory.

Profiting From the Pain of Others Mar 22, 2021
    Show notes

Rightfully so, people are questioning the paper trail of national groups that receive donations for families whose loved ones are victims of things like police brutality. Why is the money not going to the victim's families, despite tens of millions made from these people's murder?

Check out your local grassroots organizations, and accounts that share that information with the general public. In San Diego, I like to follow @polititexts; they share a wealth of information regarding where items/funds can be donated to assist local organizing and community members, as well as keeping these organizations honest about who is on their team.

We all have a role to play, no way is more necessary than the other. We all just have to do what we can, and feel a call for.

Cultural Mixing & Miscegenation Legislation Mar 15, 2021
    Show notes

While cultural mixing has happened since the beginning of time, there was a large push to stop these unions' potential to produce mixed-race populations. These anti-miscegenation laws in the Americas continued from the 17th century through the 20th century, but still perpetuate today. Race was created in the 17th century as a way to control movement of individuals in a caste-system that positions Indigenous and Black people as the bottom caste (meaning they receive the worst jobs, little to no legal protection, etc.).

Where's the Minimum Wage Raise, Joe? Mar 08, 2021
    Show notes

The title speaks for itself, but this episode covers what is in the COVID Relief Bill, the George Floyd Justice in Policing (JIPA) Bill (HR 7120), as well as information surrounding the coming trial of Derek Chauvin for the 2nd degree murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Justice for Angelo Quinto, of Antioch, CA.

Bound by Guano Mar 01, 2021
    Show notes

Today's Happy Hour is super short (last call!), but we are discussing the unifying that guano has on Africa, Asia, and Europe - and its role in the agro-industrial complex and early globalization.

Check out "1493" by Charles C. Mann, if you are interested in more about today's topic.

    Rise in Anti-Asian Attacks Feb 22, 2021
    Show notes

Specifically a history of anti-Chinese and anti-Filipino attacks and legislation in the United States.

    Reconstruct That! Feb 15, 2021
    Show notes

Reconstruction only lasted 12 years (1865-1877), and in this podcast we analyze why that was. Hint: freedom is not the same as liberty. Black Codes not only limited the liberties and freedoms of Black citizens, but also White citizens. But, you know, they didn't realize that so what else is new?

Lincoln Ain't (Really) Ya Boy Feb 08, 2021
    Show notes

The North is really no morally better than the South, and the same goes for the West. The Civil War was fought from 1861-1865, and while the North won the war, the South won the social war. They were able to maintain (federally illegal) racist legislation to its 'free' Black citizens; a legacy that has roots in the issues of today. We will also be talking about Lincoln as a politician, playing both sides of the fence, rather than as any true savior of American history.

The Case for Increased Minimum Wage Feb 01, 2021
    Show notes

*yells* YOU CANNOT SAY YOU ARE FOR THE ECONOMY IF YOU DO NOT WANT PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THE MARKET ECONOMY.

$15 is not even 'livable' according to MIT's livable wage calculator (https://livingwage.mit.edu/) in San Diego county, for those who have no children. This is indicative of a social problem, as well as a failure of our government.

Important to note that the "federal" minimum wage has been $7.25 since July 2009.

Aftermath of Insurrection Jan 18, 2021
    Show notes

This week my dad joins me to explain what the former military personnel at the insurrection have risked with their participation. We also discuss the pandemic's toll in San Diego, and lastly the concerns over New York State Senate Bill A416.
