Phantasmal Crime 27 - The Rose Family Murders Sep 12, 2023
    Show notes

Not too far from Malabar Farm State Park in Ohio sits Pleasant Valley Cemetery. One marble grave marker stands a bit higher than the rest of the headstones around it and across the top is embossed the family name Rose. This marks the final resting place of three members of the Rose family who all died within a thirty day time frame. The cause of death was not some hideous plague that swept through town. The family was murdered. That revelation is horrific enough, but what makes this story truly chilling is that they were murdered by one of their own.

    Ep. 502 - USS Salem Aug 31, 2023
    Show notes

The USS Salem was the flagship of the 6th Fleet and is nicknamed "The Sea Witch." She was first launched in 1947 as a Naval cruiser and was fortunate to never see any battle. But that didn't keep her from being linked to death with reports of onboard deaths ranging from 75 to 100. And that has left ghosts on this now floating museum in Quincy, Massachusetts that we had the opportunity to explore when we visited Salem in August of 2022. Join us for the history and hauntings of the USS Salem! The Moment in Oddity features Magnetic Termites and This Month in History features Cy Young's major league debut. We are joined by Jared Rang who suggested this location!

Phantasmal Crime 26 - The Dark Power of the Everglades Aug 29, 2023
    Show notes

The Florida Everglades is a network of impenetrable swamps, snaking waterways and thick cypress forests. This would be a great place to make a body disappear and there is a dark history here of disappearances, death and hauntings. Conservative numbers claim that there have been 175 unsolved murders here since 1965. People claim that the Everglades is haunted and there are stories going back to the times of the earliest settlers here, the Calusa tribe, that speak of a dark energy and power.

    Ep. 501 - Hotel del Coronado Aug 24, 2023
    Show notes

There's no other way to describe the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego other than magnificent. The structure is unique and easily recognizable with its Queen Anne Victorian architecture and white clapboard exterior topped with red turrets. Much has been added to it through the years to modernize it, but the original 1888 hotel still dominates the scene. A beautiful stranger came to stay in 1892 and she was found dead at the hotel. And now that hotel is famously haunted by her spirit. From the hotel, one can see the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which also is apparently haunted. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Hotel del Coronado. The Moment in Oddity features a gold coin treasure and This Month in History features the Lincoln penny.

    Ep. 500 - Mystic Mountains Aug 17, 2023
    Show notes

Vast areas of the oceans have never been explored, but there are also places on the earth that have been left untouched. Particularly the mountains. Some are so high, men can only dream of scaling them. Others are so thick with vegetation, it is impossible to penetrate deeply. Fathomless mysteries are hidden within them. Several of these mountains have legends connected to them, making them mystical. The irony of many of these mystical peaks is that although they rise high above the horizon, their roots go deep, many ushering an entrance to the underworld. Join us as we share some of the world's mystic mountains! The Moment in Oddity was suggested by Chelsea Flowers and features Skin Furniture and This Month in History features Betty Boop makes her debut.

    Phantasmal Crime 25 - Ursulines Avenue's Murder Block Aug 15, 2023
    Show notes

New Orleans, Louisiana is well known for its legends and its ghosts. Like every other large city, it has played host to some heinous crimes and the 700 block of Ursulines Avenue seems to be a murder block. Is there something evil here? A legend grew up around a sensational crime that took place here in 1927 starring a spectre nicknamed "The Sausage Ghost." Seventy-five years later, another very similar and grotesque crime occurred just a couple doors down the block.

Denver was considered the Queen City of the Plains during the Victorian era and by 1867, it was designated the territorial capital. Colorado would gain statehood in 1876 and a capitol would be built on Capitol Hill starting in 1886. Capitol Hill would become a thriving neighborhood, particularly for the wealthy, and it would be here that Denver's Millionaire's Row would be established. The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion is one of the homes that has survived from that opulent era. There are many ghost stories that have been told about this property through the years.
