(Bonus) Territorial evolution of the British Empire Sep 19, 2022
    Show notes

(Bonus) The territorial evolution of the British Empire is considered to have begun with the foundation of the English colonial empire in the late 16th century. Since then, many territories around the world have been under the control of the United Kingdom or its predecessor states. When the Kingdom of Great Britain was formed in 1707 by the union of the Kingdom of Scotland with the Kingdom of England, the latter country's colonial possessions passed to the new state. Similarly, when Great Britain was united with the Kingdom of Ireland in 1801 to form the United Kingdom, control over its colonial possessions passed to the latter state. Collectively, these territories are referred to as the British Empire. Upon much of Ireland gaining independence in 1922 as the Irish Free State, the other territories of the empire remained under the control of the United Kingdom.

(Bonus) Trekking during the WWII Blitz Sep 11, 2022
    Show notes

(Bonus) Large numbers of British civilians engaged in trekking during the WWII Blitz. This involved leaving cities at night to sleep in nearby towns and rural areas. The practice was most prevalent in provincial cities during early 1941. While the British Government was concerned that trekking indicated that civilian morale was under strain, the practice was generally motivated by a desire to avoid the risk of death or injury and to be able to sleep.

(Bonus) Evacuations of civilians in Britain during World War II Sep 11, 2022
    Show notes

(Bonus) The evacuation of civilians in Britain during the Second World War was designed to protect people, especially children, from the risks associated with aerial bombing of cities by moving them to areas thought to be less at risk. Under the name "Operation Pied Piper", the effort began on 1 September 1939 and officially relocated 1.5 million people. There were further waves of official evacuation and re-evacuation from the south and east coasts in June 1940, when a seaborne invasion was expected, and from affected cities after the Blitz began in September 1940. Official evacuations also took place from the UK to other parts of the British Empire, and many non-official evacuations within and from the UK. Other mass movements of civilians included British citizens arriving from the Channel Islands, and displaced people arriving from continental Europe.

(Bonus) Biography of Queen Elizabeth II Sep 11, 2022
    Show notes

(Bonus) Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her life and served as monarch of 15 of them at the time of her death.[a] Her reign of 70 years and 214 days is the longest of any British monarch and the longest recorded of any female head of state in history. Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Her father acceded to the throne in 1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, making Elizabeth the heir presumptive. She was educated privately at home and began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In November 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, and their marriage lasted 73 years until his death in April 2021. They had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward.

Queen Elizabeth (then Princess) Comforts UK Children-1940 Sep 11, 2022
    Show notes

S04-E02 We feature Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth) in her first radio speech. In 1940, at just 13 years of age, Princess Elizabeth spoke briefly with listeners throughout the commonwealth and the U.S through a BBC children's radio program. It was a morale-boosting message to fellow young people affected by the devastating German air attacks and threats of invasion during the early part of World War II. She spoke with a maturity far beyond her young age to inspire hope for the children, some of which have been forced to evacuate from the British cities to the countryside or to other countries including the U.S.

I provide several PDF documents in addition to this audio episode: First, a biography of Princess Elizabeth who would in just a few years become Queen Elizabeth II. Second, an overview of the British civilians, both young and old, who were evacuated from Britain to other countries. Third, an overview of the civilians who trekked to the British countryside to avoid the German air attacks. And fourth, an overview of the BBC Children's Hour radio show where Princess Elizabeth delivered her short speech.

(Bonus) Abortion in the United States Sep 08, 2022
    Show notes

(Bonus) Abortion in the United States and its territories is a divisive issue in American politics and culture wars, with widely different abortion laws in U.S. states. Since 1976, the Republican Party has generally sought to restrict abortion access based on the stage of pregnancy or criminalize abortion, whereas the Democratic Party has generally defended access to abortion and has made contraception easier to obtain. The abortion-rights movement advocates for patient choice and bodily autonomy, while the anti-abortion movement maintains the fetus has a right to live. Historically framed as a debate between the pro-choice and pro-life labels, most Americans agree with some positions of each side. Support for abortion gradually increased in the U.S. beginning in the early 1970s, and stabilized during the 2010s.

(Bonus) Overview of Roe v Wade Abortion Decision Sep 08, 2022
    Show notes

(Bonus) Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States conferred the right to have an abortion. The decision struck down many federal and state abortion laws, and caused an ongoing abortion debate in the United States about whether, or to what extent, abortion should be legal, who should decide the legality of abortion, and what the role of moral and religious views in the political sphere should be. The decision also shaped debate concerning which methods the Supreme Court should use in constitutional adjudication.
