Unsaved Christians: Achieving vs. Receiving May 09, 2022

Show notes

AN UNSAVED CHRISTIAN IS ONE WHO IS CHRISTIAN IN NAME AND CULTURE, BUT IS NOT A NEW PERSON IN CHRIST.

PHILIPPIANS 3:1-2. A great definition of a Christian VS 3:

1) Worship by the Spirit of God 2) Glory in Christ Jesus 3) No confidence in flesh.

A DISTINCT CONTRAST between v2 and v3

• Those who profess to be Christian and those who are new creations in Christ

• Those who are religious (what they do) and those who are righteous (what Christ has done!)

• Those with an outward mark of tradition and those who have had an inward change

V4 If anyone could brag it's Paul. 5 really good things about Paul...5-6

1) GOOD FAMILY HERITAGE:

2) STRONG SOCIAL STATUS.

3) BIBLICAL KNOWLEDGE.

4) RELIGIOUS ACTIVITY.

5) HIGH MORAL LIFESTYLE.

V7-11 THE ONLY TREASURE OF THIS LIFE THAT COUNTS IS JESUS.

Unsaved Christians: Wide Road, Narrow Road May 02, 2022

Show notes

An Unsaved Christian is one who is Christian in name and culture, but is not a new person in Christ.

MATTHEW 7:13-14 MATTHEW 7:21-23

1. MAJORITY LOCKSTEP AND EASE ARE WARNING SIGNS ON A WIDE ROAD.

2. MINORITY LIVING AND DIFFICULTY ARE COMFORTING SIGNS ON A NARROW ROAD.

3. NOT EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES IN GOD GOES TO HEAVEN. James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder.

4. GOOD, MORAL THINGS CAN ACTUALLY KEEP US FROM HEAVEN.

5. LAW KEEPERS APART FROM JESUS ARE REALLY LAW BREAKERS. James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

What to do with this?
1. GOSPEL CLARITY IS ESSENTIAL.
2. REFUSE TO BE IN DENIAL ABOUT OUR NATION.

3. REFUSE TO BE IN DENIAL ABOUT FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

4. REFUSE TO BE IN DENIAL ABOUT YOUR OWN LIFE.

The Never-Ending Fight – Malcolm Marshall Apr 26, 2022

The Never-Ending Fight

1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV

Temptation: Anything that entices you to the point that you consider walking contrary to God’s will.

I Corinthians 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (ESV)

Three clear takeaways from this verse:

o Temptation is common to everyone.

o Temptation’s allure can only go so far.

o Temptation has an escape route.

Eight Truths about Temptation

1. Our enemy has been scouting us a lot longer than we’ve been scouting him.

2. Temptation always returns to the scene of its previous success.

Guilt is rooted in shame & is used by the enemy to keep us from getting closer to God. Conviction is rooted in love & is used by God to keep us from getting closer to sin.

3. Yielding to temptation will not cut you off from God’s grace, but it will limit your usefulness to Him.

4. Any temptation constantly indulged in, denied or hidden will eventually enslave you.

5. Satan has assigned certain people to feed your temptation. Be discerning!

6. Your temptations will always bond with the wrong people & make you uncomfortable in the presence of the right people.

7. Temptation cannot be overcome by human reasoning or willpower. The way to overcome temptation is by complete separation from it.

8. Failure to identify & target your dominant temptations guarantees defeat.

Spiritual Ammunition for The Never-Ending Fight:

1) Our vulnerability to temptation strikes during two key times: 1) In our greatest successes & in our greatest trials.

2) Ask yourself this diagnostic question: Why am I drawn to this?

3) Look inside out.

o Who Christ is in you— Savior and Provider.

o Who you are in Christ—God’s adopted child, eternally secure & indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

o What you have in Christ—The promise of access to almighty God.

Sermon in a Sentence: “Never develop an appetite for the fruit of a tree you cannot climb.” (African Proverb)

LUKE 24:1-2 The women made their way to the tomb expecting defeat. HOPELESS.

In previous chapter, LUKE 23:49, these women had watched the death

Hopelessness is when the plans get ripped away,

LUKE 24:3-4a CONFUSED. confusion is when you no longer even have a plan.

LUKE 24:4-5 FEARFUL Fear is feeling like everything coming at your plans is a threat.

LUKE 24:6-11 DOUBTFUL. Doubt is when you think God’s promises will never happen.

LUKE 24:12 AMAZED!

NOTHING PUSHES BACK HOPELESSNESS, CONFUSION, FEAR, AND DOUBT MORE THAN BEING AMAZED AT THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS.

THERE HAS NOT BEEN A MORE SIGNIFICANT WEEK NEITHER IN HUMAN HISTORY NOR FOR THE HUMAN HEART THAN THE LAST WEEK OF JESUS BEFORE THE CROSS

I CORINTHIANS 11:24-25

WE REMEMBER… THE BODY OF JESUS. THE BLOOD OF JESUS.

WE CONSIDER…OUR SIN. 1 CORINTHIANS 11:27-28 I CORINTHIANS 11:29-30 GOD’S PROMISES.
1. ALL SINS OF ALL CHRISTIANS ARE ALL COVERED…ALL BY CHRIST’S GRACE!
2. CHRIST’S REMARKABLE LOVE IS REMARKABLY INEXHAUSTIBLE!

AUGUSTINE, THE CROSS WAS THE PULPIT FROM WHICH CHRIST PREACHED HIS LOVE TO THE WORLD.

IN COMMUNION, WE RENEW OUR SURRENDER TO CHRIST AND RENEW OUR RESPONSIVE LOVE FOR CHRIST.

ISAIAH 52:13-15 HE WILL BE SAVAGED, BUT HE WILL SAVE.

ISAIAH 53:1-3 JESUS WILLINGLY EMBRACED A HUMAN FRAME WITH ALL ITS LIMITATIONS

ISAIAH 52:4-6 CHRIST IS CARRIED TO DEATH SO WE CAN BE CARRIED TO LIFE!

1) He will take the penalty of sin. 2) He will take the place of sinners.

He who hung the earth is hanging; He who fixed the heavens has been fixed onto a cross; He who fastened the universe has been fastened to a tree. The Sovereign One has been made unrecognizable in a broken human body and is not even allowed a garment to keep Him from our view. That is why the lights of heaven turned away, and the day was darkened.” – Melito of Sardis

ISAIAH 53:7-9 THE INNOCENT WAS BURIED IN THE EARTH SO THE GUILTY COULD BE RAISED TO HEAVEN.

ISAIAH 53:10-12 CHRIST ON THE CROSS WAS NOT HUMAN STRATEGY, IT WAS GOD’S DIVINE PLAN.

THIS IS THE POWER OF THE CROSS: GOD ACCEPTS UNACCEPTABLE PEOPLE GOD LIFTS SHAMEFUL PEOPLE.

GOD ADOPTS REBELS AS ROYALTY. GOD DECLARES THE GUILTY INNOCENT.
