    Widely considered the world's top expert on Sports Leadership, Jeff Janssen is the founder and president of the Janssen Sports Leadership Center.     196: Learning to Be Present Focused with Brett Haskell, Director of Sport Psychology, University of Nebraska Jul 23, 2018

    Dr. Brett Haskell, Ph.D., was promoted to Director of Sports Psychology in July of 2018.

    In her role, Dr. Haskell provides counseling, psychological services, mental skills training, teambuilding and leadership development services for each of Nebraska's 24 sports and more than 600 Husker student-athletes. Haskell works closely with student-athletes to help them develop skills and techniques that enhance personal well-being, address mental health concerns and optimize performance. She also works with coaches to provide team interventions that build student-athlete resilience and grow mental resolve.

    Dr. Haskell came to Nebraska in September of 2014 after serving as a counseling and sport psychology postdoctoral counselor at Kansas. Along with obtaining her doctoral degree from Kansas in Counseling Psychology, Dr. Haskell provided counseling and performance enhancement training to Jayhawk student-athletes for five years.

    Dr. Haskell earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Nebraska-Kearney in 2005 and her master's degree in sport psychology from North Carolina-Greensboro in 2008. While at UNK, she was a member of the Loper volleyball team. Dr. Haskell resides in Lincoln with her husband, Brian, son Ezra and daughter Parker.

    Jim Thompson, founder and CEO of Positive Coaching Alliance, started PCA in 1998 to transform the culture of youth sports into a Development Zone™ with the goal to develop Better Athletes, Better People. PCA's vision of youth sports as a Development Zone has attracted the support and involvement of many elite coaches, athletes, academics and business leaders in this country.

    Jim received an MBA from Stanford where he was Director of the Public Management Program, named during his tenure as the nation's top non-profit business management program. He has written nine books on youth sports including: Positive Coaching, The Double-Goal Coach, Shooting in the Dark, Elevating Your Game and Developing Better Athletes, Better People.

    Jim is on Stanford's Continuing Studies Program faculty where he teaches courses in coaching, leadership, and sport & spiritually.

    193: A Mindset for Excellence with Dr. Jesse Michel, Houston Astros, Mental Skills Coordinator Jul 06, 2018

    Jesse Michel is currently in his second season at the helm of Houston Astros Mental Skills Program. As the Mental Skills Coordinator for the 2017 World Series champions, Jesse helps ensure the players, coaches, and staff are mentally prepared to compete at their best every single day. He has spearheaded the efforts to develop and implement a comprehensive Mental Training Program for the organization, and is an integral part of the player development staff for the major league and minor league teams.

    Prior to his role with the Astros, Jesse was the Lead Master Resilience Trainer-Performance Expert for Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness (CSF2) at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, HI. While in Hawaii, worked with Soldiers to develop the same mental skills and techniques that elite athletes and use to excel on and off the field.

    Jesse has a Ph.D. in Sport and Exercise Psychology and M.A. in Community Counseling from West Virginia University, a M.S. in Exercise and Sport Science from Ithaca College, and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of California, San Diego. He is currently listed on the United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant for the Association of Applied Sport Psychology.

    High performers train their focus. They know that busy doesn't mean they are doing the most important work. They know their human nature is that you are not disciplined and nor have self-control. So, train your mind to focus on what's most important for them given their mission and purpose. They decide to focus on one thing – put the distractions away. High performers say no so they can say yes to the most important things.

    191: BRAND Yourself with Dr. Kensa Gunter, Licensed Psychologist and Certified Mental Performance Consultant Jun 29, 2018

    Dr. Kensa Gunter is a licensed psychologist (Georgia) and a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP).

    In her Atlanta based private practice, she provides individual counseling, sport psychology services, and consultation services to various organizations. Dr. Gunter has worked with the Atlanta Falcons (NFL) and the Atlanta Dream (WNBA) as well as athletes from a variety of levels (e.g., high school, collegiate, & professional) and non-athletic populations. She also provides workshops and lectures both locally and nationally.

    She's passionate about helping people and working to decrease the stigma around mental health that exists within society and particularly within athletic & African-American communities. She serves in various professional organizations and is also listed on the United States Olympic Committee Sport Psychology Registry.
