Lindsay Clancy Case: Defense Exposes Gaps in Psychiatrist's Postpartum Track Record Aug 10, 2026
    Show notes

If you're the state's expert witness, the last thing you want is your own resume working against you. That's what happened today in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, when defense attorney Kevin Reddington took psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Tufts apart on cross. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation after prosecutors allege she strangled her three children โ€” 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan โ€” with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She's pleaded not guilty, with an insanity defense built around severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Tufts told the court she'd been trained in postpartum treatment and had seen as many as 50 patients across four years. Reddington countered with the specifics: in the month leading up to Clancy's evaluation โ€” her first stretch practicing solo โ€” she'd seen roughly two postpartum depression patients. He also raised a pending lawsuit accusing Tufts of overstating her postpartum credentials, a detail that undercuts the "trusted expert" framing prosecutors need her to carry. He then pivoted to medication, walking her through side effects and drug interactions and pushing on how much she actually knew about what Clancy was taking, before hammering what he's calling a breakdown in communication among her doctor, her psychiatrist, and everyone else supposedly coordinating her care.

Prosecutors continue to argue Clancy knew what she was doing despite the psychiatric defense. She allegedly attempted suicide after the killings by jumping from a second-story window and remains paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands during the incident and has since relocated to Manhattan. Proceedings continue in Plymouth Superior Court.

How Lindsay Clancy's Psychiatrist Described The Day Before Aug 10, 2026
    Show notes

Two doctors testified at the Lindsay Clancy murder trial on Day 9, and both are defendants in wrongful-death lawsuits filed over the deaths of the three Clancy children. That collision is the spine of this episode of Hidden Killers. The state called Dr. Alia Goodheart and Dr. Jennifer Tufts to help prove Lindsay Clancy planned the killings in Duxbury, Massachusetts. What jurors heard cut both ways. Goodheart explained why McLean Hospital sent Clancy home on January 5, 2023: she seemed like a caring mother focused on the future, with support at home and follow-up care booked. Nineteen days later the children were gone. Pressed by defense attorney Kevin Reddington, Goodheart acknowledged she has never treated postpartum psychosis, and Yahoo News reports McLean never pulled Clancy's prior records or ran blood tests during her stay. Then Tufts described where Clancy stood the day before it all ended, in two words said under oath. Tony lays out what the prosecution wanted from this testimony, what the defense actually got, and why the stakes could not fork harder. A conviction means life without parole. A finding of not guilty by reason of a lack of criminal responsibility means a state psychiatric facility. There's also the courtroom fight that opened the day, an accusation about a hot mic, a denial from the district attorney's office, and a judge reminding everyone in the room that the microphones are always on. Tufts is back on the stand August 10 for cross-examination, and Reddington has already shown which prescription he plans to start with. This is the episode that gets you ready for it.

Lindsay Clancy Trial: Prosecution's Postpartum Expert Grilled Over Her Own Experience Aug 10, 2026
    Show notes

Dr. Jennifer Tufts, the psychiatrist who evaluated Lindsay Clancy, spent today's session getting picked apart by defense attorney Kevin Reddington โ€” and it wasn't pretty. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is charged with three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation after prosecutors allege she killed her three children โ€” 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan โ€” with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She's pleaded not guilty, and her legal team, led by Reddington, is arguing severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication left her unable to understand what she was doing.

On the stand, Tufts said she'd trained in postpartum care and had treated up to 50 patients over four years. Reddington zeroed in on a narrower number: in the month before she saw Clancy โ€” while practicing independently for the first time โ€” she'd handled maybe two postpartum depression cases. He also brought up a lawsuit that names Tufts, alleging she misrepresented her postpartum expertise, which is the kind of detail that tends to stick with a jury longer than a resume. From there, Reddington moved into medication โ€” pressing her on side effects, interactions, and what she actually knew about the drugs Clancy was taking. The throughline of his questioning: a communication breakdown between doctor, patient, and the other providers involved in her care.

Prosecutors still maintain Clancy understood the nature of her actions despite the defense's psychiatric claims. After the killings, she allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court.

What Happened to Alex Murdaugh's Shirt Inside SLED's Lab Aug 10, 2026
    Show notes

Alex Murdaugh's lawyers just filed a motion that doesn't name one hidden document or one lying witness. Instead it demands something bigger: that prosecutors search ten categories of material โ€” witness deals, disciplinary files, lab records, everything โ€” and then swear in writing that nothing helpful to Murdaugh exists beyond what they've already turned over. Put your name on it. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer spent a career inside federal investigations. On this episode of Hidden Killers, she tells Tony Brueski what a demand like that actually does inside an agency, and whether Dick Harpootlian is fishing or hunting.

The motion didn't land in a vacuum. It landed one day after a federal judge dismissed Murdaugh's $600,000 lawsuit against Becky Hill, the former clerk whose jury interference got his murder convictions overturned. Hill pleaded guilty to obstruction, perjury, and misconduct: charges built on a book-promotion photo, self-paid bonuses, and lying about sealed exhibits. She received no prison time. The tampering itself was never charged. Coffindaffer confronts the piece of that story that won't sit still: SLED investigated Hill while SLED's own biggest conviction depended on her verdict surviving.

And SLED's record is exactly why the written-certification demand has teeth. Lead investigator David Owen is connected to a separate murder case a judge dismissed after finding evidence that could have helped the defendant was never properly disclosed. Agent Ryan Kelly, whose testimony cleared Eddie Smith of any connection to the killings, was fired this June from a sheriff's office internal affairs job. The firing is unrelated to his SLED work, but his file now sits inside the defense's demand. Then there's the shirt: negative for human blood, then chemically rendered untestable forever.

April's retrial will decide Murdaugh's fate. This conversation is about who audits the people who decided it the first time.

What Nancy Guthrie's Kidnapper Actually Received From the FBI Aug 10, 2026
    Show notes

The office running the Nancy Guthrie investigation handed the public its biggest piece of evidence by accident. The Pima County Sheriff's Office sent out a media release with the alleged kidnapper's Bitcoin wallet address printed at the bottom. They clawed it back, but only after it was screenshotted across the internet. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer took that address and traced every transaction on it, and this episode of Hidden Killers walks through what she found.

Start with the number. The alleged demand was four million dollars. Coffindaffer's trace shows the only money that ever entered the wallet was 0.0022 Bitcoin โ€” about three hundred dollars โ€” deposited by the FBI on February 10. It sits there untouched. No ransom was ever paid, which lands hard against the family's public statement that they did their part.

Then the silence. The blockchain shows messages written straight to the wallet, including the exact words Savannah Guthrie spoke on camera about being willing to pay. Whoever sent those notes had a direct, open channel to the family the entire time and never used it. Coffindaffer tells Tony Brueski what that pattern looks like from the inside of a federal kidnapping case. None of the explanations are comfortable.

She also separates the two ransom notes into what she believes are two different hands: an organized author writing threats on a schedule, and a second voice claiming they never intended to hurt her. If she's right, the apology note reads like insurance in a death penalty state.

And through all of it, Sheriff Nanos sits for his six-month message, calls the FBI partnership great, and concedes thousands of hours of video haven't been reviewed. Six months. Nancy Guthrie's family is still waiting. Tony and Coffindaffer follow the only trail that can't be spun: the money.

What Lindsay Clancy's Own Psychiatrist Admitted In Court Aug 10, 2026
    Show notes

Something happened in the Lindsay Clancy trial that legal analysts didn't expect from a prosecution witness โ€” an admission that may have done more for the defense than for the state. I break it down along with everything else that unfolded across the Commonwealth's case.

Thirteen psychiatric medications, all within therapeutic range โ€” that's the prosecution's headline fact, the one they want the jury fixated on. It's supposed to mean she was lucid. It doesn't mean what they think it means, and their own expert said so under cross-examination.

Day 8 alone produced eleven witnesses, all called by the state. A medical examiner detailed how 8-month-old Callan died. Lindsay Clancy broke down hard enough at the defense table that the judge halted the hearing until she composed herself. The family's pediatrician recounted a completely unremarkable checkup with 5-year-old Cora hours before the deaths. Coworkers and friends testified to insomnia, brain fog, a rotating list of medications, and time spent at McLean Hospital. Patrick Clancy's own father took the stand and called her a great mother.

Then the case detective was asked about a search warrant on her Facebook account, hunting for any sign of abuse in the home. He confirmed it turned up nothing.

Her journal entries were read into the record โ€” lines about drowning, about barely holding on. The prosecution reads those words as premeditation. The defense reads them as a woman's mind unraveling in real time, on paper, before anyone stepped in. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington has conceded what happened. What he's fighting is whether Massachusetts can prove she was sane beyond a reasonable doubt. I walk through where that fight stands now.

Keffe D Called Himself WHAT On National TV?! Aug 09, 2026
    Show notes

There's a version of Duane "Keffe D" Davis who spent fifteen years describing, in detail, how he says Tupac Shakur was killed. He told the LAPD in a 2008 proffer session. He said it again on BET's "Death Row Chronicles." He put it in writing in his 2019 memoir, claiming he handed his nephew Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson the gun and ordered the hit over a fight at the MGM Grand. Then Davis got arrested in September 2023, and a different version showed up. He told ABC News he made the whole thing up to sell books. He said he wasn't even in Las Vegas that night, contradicting what he'd published under his own name. Both versions can't be true, and the jury in Las Vegas is going to have to decide which one to believe with no murder weapon and no DNA to lean on. Anderson, the man Davis says pulled the trigger, denied it before he was killed in Compton in 1998. Judge Carli Kierny has ruled Davis's own statements admissible, which means the case largely comes down to his own words against each other. Every defense motion so far has failed. The immunity argument built on that 2008 proffer was rejected. The bid to suppress a search of his home was denied. The push to dismiss over the twenty-seven-year delay was denied. Las Vegas police had his statements by 2009 and waited fourteen years to make an arrest. Davis has burned through three legal teams and picked up a battery conviction behind bars along the way. He's 63 now, facing life without parole, and he's pleaded not guilty. Mopreme Shakur says his family has waited thirty years to see this case reach a courtroom, and this trial is that moment.

What Kohberger's First Statement Never Mentioned Aug 09, 2026
    Show notes

After three and a half years of silence, Bryan Kohberger finally spoke โ€” and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott noticed what he left out before she noticed what he put in. His statement calls the case against him "a work of fiction," invites the state to seek the death penalty again, and thanks the people who believe he's innocent. He references the public, the state, his family, his supporters. He never once names Kaylee, Madison, Xana, or Ethan.
Scott breaks the statement down line by line โ€” the opening that positions Kohberger as the wronged party, the phrase "my actual innocence is my truth," and a new affidavit accusing his own defense attorneys of telling him guilt wasn't an important factor in taking the plea.
Meanwhile, his handwritten petition to withdraw that plea has its own origin story. Reporters traced key phrases in it back to a true crime book โ€” "broken plea" is literally the book's title, and "clumps of hair," the detail Kohberger cites as proof of his innocence, appears nowhere in any court filing. His own defense team once tried to suppress that same book with a cease-and-desist letter. A DNA expert his defense hired had already tested that hair and found it consistent with Ethan Chapin's own, according to PEOPLE.
Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta of Defense Diaries joins Tony Brueski to explain why Steve Goncalves โ€” the father who resisted this plea deal hardest โ€” is now the one pushing for a trial and the death penalty, and whether any of what Kohberger filed has a real shot in court. They also walk through the nine-page questionnaire where Kohberger answered "yes" under oath, confirming the plea he's now trying to take back was entered voluntarily.

Why Murdaugh Prosecutors Won't Test This DNA Aug 09, 2026
    Show notes

There's DNA sitting in a South Carolina evidence locker that could identify whose skin was under Maggie Murdaugh's fingernails the night she and her son Paul were shot to death, and prosecutors trying to convict Alex Murdaugh a second time don't want an independent lab anywhere near it. SLED tested the sample once, said it didn't match the family, and stopped. The defense wants a second opinion from the genealogy lab that helped crack the Bryan Kohberger case in Idaho. The state wants first crack at it themselves, using the same process that already failed, in a procedure the defense argues could use up what's left before anyone independent ever sees it. Ask yourself why. If that DNA is really meaningless, a confirmed result helps the prosecution as much as anyone else. The only reason to block a test is if you're not sure what it says. The defense has also laid out a pattern they say runs through this whole case: a white T-shirt that tested negative for blood, a blood spatter expert who allegedly reversed his findings after a visit from the lead investigator, and a SLED captain accused of directing subordinates to bury exculpatory results. Meanwhile, a federal judge threw out Murdaugh's lawsuit against former clerk of court Becky Hill on August 5th, the case his own attorney admitted was built for one purpose: putting her under oath and pulling her records before the retrial. Gone with it is any chance of tracing the anonymous email that got a juror removed from deliberations. Two doors just closed, five months before Alex Murdaugh goes back to trial for murder. Judge Debra McCaslin, who's overseeing the retrial, has already asked prosecutors point blank how long independent testing would take, a question that doesn't leave much room to keep stalling.

What Lindsay Clancy Did In Her Final Twenty-Five Minutes Aug 09, 2026
    Show notes

Two families, two very different relationships with the help that was available to them โ€” and this week both stories collided. Lindsay Clancy's murder trial in Plymouth Superior Court just wrapped three days of heavy testimony: Patrick Clancy on the stand for two of them, his 911 call played for a visibly shaken jury, and first responders walking the courtroom through the scene itself.
Then prosecutors produced nine prescription bottles. Most still had pills in them. That single detail cuts against the defense's central argument โ€” that Lindsay was overwhelmed by medications her providers kept adjusting. Her lawsuit says a postpartum program discharged her after one day in December of 2022, after providers noted her symptoms might be medication-related and told her to taper off an antipsychotic. She was a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General. She knew exactly where to go for help โ€” and got a single day of it.
Compare that to Nick Reiner, who told reporters in 2015 he'd been through somewhere between seventeen and eighteen rehab stays since around age fifteen, all arranged and paid for by his family, including a yearlong conservatorship. He's now charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner and has pleaded not guilty.
Tony Brueski connects what jurors just heard about those pill bottles and that twenty-five-minute errand prosecutors won't stop mentioning, to the bigger question underneath both cases: whether endless access to treatment and almost none of it produce the same outcome, and what that says about the systems built to catch people before this happens. Reiner has pleaded not guilty and no motive has been officially confirmed. Clancy's jury has not returned a verdict, and prosecutors argue she acted intentionally and should be held criminally responsible.
