Embedded With The Hardest-Hit Unit In Iraq Mar 03, 2025

"Desert Storm" vet and Army Times reporter Kelly Kennedy leapt at the chance to embed with an infantry unit to work on a story about PTSD. What Kelly couldn't have known is that her unit, Battalion 1-26, Charlie Company, was one of the first to serve 15 months in combat conditions. (A decision later reversed by the U.S. Army.)

Kelly's unit was placed in a "hot spot" and given the impossible mission to win hearts and minds. In fact, these soldiers faced almost daily IED incidents, earning them the dubious distinction of becoming the hardest-hit unit in Iraq. Things came to a head when one day the team refused to go on patrol, following the death of a comrade. Their 'mutiny' became a political lightning rod that resulted in ruined careers, ostracism, and penalty by the military upon Charlie Company. Many struggled when they got back home, and predictably there were a number of suicides within their ranks.

Kelly reports on her experience, her own PTSD, and that of the soldiers whom she befriended, with whom she remains connected.

Our remarkable guest from Season One returns explaining how a small group of powerful men create celebrities out of abused children:

Anneke Lucas was only a small child growing up in a little town in Belgium, when her mother began taking her to adult parties, and trafficking her to be abused as part of an organized system. When she was nine, she was spotted at one of these events by none other than David Rockefeller, who made her his own special project, whisking her away to America and presenting her as his ‘niece.’ Presented to David’s superior in the group, Sir Evelyn Rothschild, Anneke was invited to “join the family,” pledge her soul, and began preparing for her designated role as a future singing star. WWII’s Most Infamous Survival Story: The U.S.S. Indianapolis Feb 10, 2025

Re-airing a Season One fan favorite:

The most secretive mission of World War II ended in the largest scale shark attack of all time. The U.S.S. Indianapolis’ mission was so secret, the entire crew was unaware of their cargo: the components of the atomic bomb ‘Little Boy’ which was dropped on Hiroshima. Thus, when the cruiser was sunk by a Japanese torpedo, no one knew, and 900 sailors were left floating in shark-infested waters for four days. On July 30, 1945, after delivering their top secret cargo which would would strike Japan only one week later, the USS Indianapolis was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine. The 610-foot cruiser quickly sank, and the surviving sailors had to battle dehydration and hundreds of hungry sharks for over four days.
The crew of the Indianapolis was filled with incredible heroes, not all of whom survived this harrowing ordeal.

The Birth of Special Forces In The Civil War Jan 27, 2025

Military historian Patrick O’Donnell puts a spotlight on America’s original Special Forces units:

Founded in Missouri by Major General John C. Fremont, (and ‘named’ after his wife) the Jessie Scouts were a valuable intelligence cadre for President Lincoln during the Civil War. On the other side were Mosby’s Rangers and the Confederate Secret Service. Created to infiltrate and disrupt, these groups operated behind enemy lines, sometimes disguised as women or opposing soldiers, taking huge risks to accomplish their missions. They also participated in combat, beginning at the Second Battle of Manassas (or Bull Run.) Patrick describes these remarkable groups, and the plot to assassinate President Lincoln in his book, “The Unvanquished.”

Dropped Behind Enemy Lines: The Lost Paratroopers Of Normandy Jan 20, 2025

A fantastic WWII adventure: On June 16, 1944, the storied 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions accidentally dropped U.S. paratroopers off-target behind enemy lines in France near the ancient town of Graignes, Normandy, as part of the D-Day offensive. At great risk to themselves, including penalty of death, the 900 townspeople of Graignes determined to protect the paratroopers and fight the Nazis as a combined force, using the weapons the paratroopers had brought with them.

What transpired could be the best WWII movie never made. Acclaimed U.S. military historian, Professor Stephen Rabe’s own father was a paratrooper in Graignes. While he grew up hearing the story and meeting other surviving solders, it took Stephen over 60 years to research and write the story in his book, “The Lost Paratroopers of Normandy: A Story of Resistance, Courage, and Solidarity in a French Village.”

A Story Of Murder And Redemption Dec 30, 2024

As a toddler, Quan Huynh came to the U.S. as a Vietnamese refugee. A few years later he lost his father to cancer, and as an angry teenager joined up with the Vietnamese gangs of Los Angeles. He quickly got into trouble, shooting three people and killing a fourth. Quan was sentenced to 15 years to life, and sent to prison.

Quan shares his story of redemption and inner discovery during his incarceration, built upon the principle of taking responsibility, as detailed in his book "Sparrow In The Razor Wire." He was ultimately paroled and now counsels those currently serving sentences and former inmates to create constructive lives after prison.

SAS Rescue of the Iranian Embassy in London On Live TV! Dec 02, 2024

A Fan-Favorite Reprise Episode From Season One:
Prior to May 5, 1980, the world was largely unaware that the UK’s SAS (Special Air Service), or any elite special operations units, existed at all. Six days earlier, terrorists had stormed the Iranian Embassy in London and taken 21 hostages. As the situation was being covered on live TV around the world, the SAS attacked the embassy. HBH is honored to be joined by two members of that elite SAS team, Pete Winner and Sekonaia ‘Tak’ Takevisi.
The terrorists had not anticipated a violent response to their actions. However, what they received when UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher gave ‘Operation Nimrod’ the go ahead, was the full force of the most precise military instrument at her disposal: the SAS.
The SAS made an example of the terrorists for all the world to see. As a result, overnight, the SAS, also known as ‘The Regiment’, became famous around the world - a world that did not know soldiers of this caliber existed.

From The Brown Water Navy In Vietnam To High Command: Admiral Bill Retz Nov 11, 2024

While patrolling the waterways in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta as Operations Officer, Bill Retz nearly lost his life. Doctors advised him that his navy career was over yet—defying the odds after a difficult recovery—he ultimately rose to the rank of Rear Admiral. Tragedy At Abbey Gate Oct 07, 2024

Mikael Cook served as a U.S. Army engineer in the reserves. He was sent to Afghanistan in 2019 helping to build out infrastructure for U.S. military camps, working with local translators and other workers. He befriended his Afghan co-workers, especially an interpreter, Muhammad, and his brother Abdul.
Following the Trump administration’s decision in 2020 to withdraw from Afghanistan after nearly 20 years, it fell to the Biden administration to execute the withdrawal which they did very abruptly in August 2021, creating administrative and civil chaos and abandoning our allies and billions of dollars of U.S. military equipment.
The scene at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport were horrific with thousands of Afghans, who had worked for the U.S. and feared Taliban reprisals, desperate to escape. With no helping coming from the Biden administration, it fell to an ad hoc coalition of U.S. civilians and military members – later dubbed “Digital Dunkirk’ – to help rescue as many Afghans as they could. On August 26, 2021, in the midst of the chaos at the airport, an ISIS-K terrorist suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt that killed 13 U.S. servicemen and over 169 Afghan civilians.
Mikael Cook tells this tragic and dramatic story from various perspectives in his riveting book, “Life and Death at Abbey Gate: The Fall of Afghanistan and the Operation to Save Our Allies.”

A Modern Lynching Sep 30, 2024

Former Florida police investigator James Byrd-Williams, Sr. recounts the story of his son's murder in 2020. 44-year-old Michael Williams was an African-American man living in the mostly White college town of Grinnell, Iowa, to be near his ex-wife and kids. Occurring just weeks after the George Floyd incident, Michael Williams’ body was found strangled and burned in a ditch outside of town. Three people were later convicted.

J.B. expresses his frustration with the thoroughness of the investigation and the fact that officials and the NAACP—eager to avoid any media attention of the type recently seen in Minneapolis—denied it was a hate crime, and avoided the word 'lynching' in describing the homicide. UK newspaper The Guardian asked, “When is a lynching a lynching?”

Daughter’s Love Solves Mystery Of WWII Hero With Severe PTSD Sep 23, 2024

Becky Ellis was one of her father’s eight children by four wives, and the chaos of her childhood, dominated by a haunted and difficult father, marked her and all her siblings. As a child, she suffered through her father’s paranoia about Nazis attacking them; trips to the dentist without anesthesia; and other irrational behaviors.

Only at age 89, when Becky was a grown wife and mother, did her father Staff Sgt. Louis K. Boswell finally share his wartime recollections as part of the legendary ‘Timberwolves’ – the nickname for the 104th infantry division. The ‘Timberwolves’ were deployed in northwestern Europe and saw almost 200 straight days of brutal fighting through France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and western Germany, including participating in the Battle of the Bulge. The group saw an extreme level of casualties, and Becky’s father described how he survived and how it felt when he returned stateside, with what was then an undiagnosed case of severe PTSD.

This compelling account is a glimpse inside military families who must welcome home a traumatized parent. Personally liberated by finally solving the mystery of her father, Becky shared her story in her book, “Little Avalanches,” and continues to work with military families coping with PTSD.

At stake on July 19th 1972 was more than just a single battle for a small town on the Gulf of Oman. Due to Mirbat’s geographic significance, had the SAS fallen the communist rebels would have taken hold of the region – and controlled the global shipping routs for Middle Eastern oil.
Statues of individual soldiers are rare, but due to his heroism at the Battle of MIrbat, there are not one but two statues of Sergeant Talaiasi Labalaba. One unveiled in 2009 at the SAS headquarters in Herefordshire, and another in 2018 by Harry and Megan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in Fiji - which at the time of Labalaba’s enlistment was still a British colony.

Three lives collide and transform in wartime: The Japanese fighter pilot, Mitsuo Fuchida, who led the attack on Pearl Harbor; the U.S. pilot Jake DeShazer, who bombed Tokyo in retaliation and became a Japanese POW; and Peggy Covell, an American woman who felt compelled to help the Japanese-Americans interned in the U.S., despite her missionary family having been murdered by the Japanese military.

Firefight in the Laotian Jungle: A Riveting Story from America's "Secret War" Jul 29, 2024

Lynne Black Jr., as member of RT Alabama – a recon team of the legendary MACV-SOG (“Study and Observations Group”) – fought in one of the most amazing missions of the eight-year "secret war" during the Vietnam War.
As their Kingbee helicopter spiraled downward toward the target west of the dangerous A Shau valley in Laos, Lynne and his team observed an NVA flag planted atop a nearby knoll surrounded by thick jungle. From his days in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, he knew that the presence of an NVA flag meant that there was at least a regiment of NVA soldiers in the area. That meant that the nine men of RT Alabama would be up against the approximately 3,000 NVA they were sent to find.

It was Lynne’s first mission into Laos and one he will never forget, including stepping up to lead his group, dodging napalm and grenades, and experiencing temporary deafness from non-stop AK-47 gunfire.

The Horrors of an African-American Mental Asylum Jul 22, 2024

In 1911, experts believed that the psychology of different races was distinct, and so, like other states, the state of Maryland founded Crownsville, a mental asylum administered by an all-white doctor and nursing staff expressly and exclusively for African-Americans.
From her book "Madness," author/Peabody Award-winning journalist/on-air NBC correspondent Antonia Hylton describes how the physical building was built through the labor of actual patients; how many African-Americans over the years were wrongfully sent to Crownsville, and how its medical practices didn’t expect patients would ever leave, let alone be healed. Hylton walks us through the dubious history of this institution, and the dramatic hiring of its first African-American staff.
Crownsville ultimately closed its doors only in 2004.

Gold Star Son Waits 21 Years to Learn of Father’s Death in Vietnam Jul 15, 2024

In 1968, SSgt. Richard Fitts Sr. was a member of the legendary MACV-SOG team based in Vietnam, fighting in the ‘secret war’ in Laos, when the helicopter he was flying in crashed in the jungle in a ball of flames. Richard was declared Missing in Action while his wife and 3-year-old son back home in Massachusetts were given no other information.
For the next 21 years, Richard Fiits Jr. grew up without a father; not knowing if he would ever return. It wasn’t until 1990, when his father’s remains were finally found and buried with military honors, that Richard Fitts Jr. finally began to learn the truth of his father’s heroic career.
Now a musician, Richard Fitts Jr. talks about growing up with only one memory of his dad, and the journey he took to solve the mystery of who his father was and discover himself along the way. As the 20+-year secrecy oath binding living SOG veterans expired, Richard was able to make some surprising discoveries which resulted in his making a documentary, “21 Years—A Folded Flag,” to honor his father’s legacy, and to also help the children of other Gold Star families.

Marine Remembers the Vicious Battle of Dai Do Jul 08, 2024

In late April 1968, John K. Cordsen was a U.S. Marine on his second tour of duty when he became engaged in one of the most fiercely fought yet little-known battles of the Vietnam War. Over three days, a single battalion of 860 U.S. Marines fought against nearly 10,000 North Vietnamese soldiers over control of a river that was a critical supply line. Casualties were high and both sides claimed victory, but U.S. forces ultimately prevailed.

Part of the storied 2nd infantry, 4th Marines known as the “Magnificent Bastards” led by Brigadier General “Wild Bill” Weise, John shares his experiences and his dramatic journey to survive after sustaining grievous injury. B-17 Pilot Shot Down Over Belgium! Jul 01, 2024

Howard Snyder Jr. was a B-17 pilot bombing Nazi targets during WWII—when in February 1944 he and his ten-man crew were shot down over Nazi-held Belgium, close to the French border. His son Steve Snyder details how eight of the men, including his dad, survived the crash before scattering into the countryside.
Howard survived through the bravery and largess of local Belgians, who tried to help the stranded American soldiers. Howard ultimately worked for the Resistance in Belgium until he was able to make his way to the Allied forces and return to London, and eventually, home to the U.S. He made lifelong friends with the people who had helped him, and their families. All of this is chronicled in Steve's book "Shot Down," including his own meeting years later, with the German pilot who shot down his dad’s plane.

In his book, "A Place Called Home," he describes his Dickensian childhood surviving a flawed parent, life on the streets, and a social services system seemingly designed to deprive his family of the help they needed.
When his mother grew too violent, David was initially relieved to be put in the foster system, despite being separated from his siblings. But things went from bad to worse, until finally he found a family that helped him find acceptance and balance into his young adulthood.

The Man Behind MK Ultra--the Infamous Government Mind Control Program Jun 10, 2024

In his book, “Poisoner-in-Chief,” (Henry Holt & Co.) former New York Times reporter and prolific author, Stephen Kinzer describes the shadowy man responsible for setting up one of the most infamous U.S. government programs. In 1953 during the “Cold War,” MK Ultra was initiated to develop techniques to brainwash people to act as our ‘programmed’ agents, in response to the paranoid misconception that Communist regimes had already succeeded in this objective, as in the film “Manchurian Candidate.”
Kinzer describes how Sidney Gottlieb coldly led this CIA-sponsored program based on heinous human research salvaged from the Nazis and Japanese, unleashing brutal experiments involving drugs, torture, sensory deprivation, and sexual abuse on human subjects. Gottlieb next went on to establish his moniker “Poisoner-in-Chief” as he led efforts to develop assorted poisons and delivery techniques, arming the CIA as it sought to assassinate various figures and world leaders including Fidel Castro.

Worst Combat in the Arghandab Valley, Afghanistan Jun 03, 2024

From Brutal Fighting in WWII's Huertgen Forest to Nuremberg Trials to Priest May 13, 2024

Moritz Fuchs was a private in the 1st infantry division, 26th regiment, when he was sent overseas after D-Da,y to help fight German forces in the Huertgen forest, which saw some of the worst fighting in the whole war and claimed over 30,000 U.S. casualties.
After being wounded and recovering, he later served in the Harz mountains of Germany. After the war, he was appointed bodyguard to the Chief Prosecutor of the Nuremberg trials and was a witness to all the historic proceedings. Father Fuchs describes his impressions of the trials and how they deeply affected him.
Immediately following his discharge and return to the U.S. he enrolled in seminary school and became a priest, serving for over 60 years until 2018 when he passed away at age 92.

Chuck Mawhinney grew up hunting in the Oregon woods on his grandfather's farm, and was selected for sniper training his first day of shooting practice in the Marines. Serving in Vietnam for 16 months, he went on to post the Corps' highest number of confirmed kills (103), and the highest number of probable kills (216). Hear his journey of skill, survival and helping his fellow soldiers.
When he returned to the U.S. he was released from the Corps as part of the Reduction in Force policy. He returned to his native woods and made a stateside career in the U.S. Forestry Service.

Canada's Psychopath Machine Jan 29, 2024

When 18-year-old Steve Smith was sent to Oak Ridge Psychiatric Hospital in Ontario, Canada in the 1960s, (misdiagnosed due to an ill-timed LSD trip) he didn't expect the inmates to be running the asylum, or to be part of a control group in a government-sponsored experiment to try to control psychopaths and turn normal people, like Steve, into controlled psychopaths, with the aim of unleashing them on society. The inmates endured cruel and ingenious methods of torture and various drugs, including LSD. Amazingly, Steve survived to tell the tale and filed the lawsuit that prevailed twenty years later and has led to other class action lawsuits against the Canadian government.

The Operation Tailwind Scandal Jan 22, 2024

On 11 September 1970, 16 U.S. soldiers and 110 Montagnards from Hatchet Company B were sent deep into the Laotian jungle in support of a CIA team, during the Vietnam War. Over the next four days, they were continually attacked by overwhelming numbers of NVA. If it wasn’t for the air support of helicopter pilots like Barry Pencek, they wouldn’t have escaped alive. Twenty years in a special report CNN characterized this mission as a vicious attack on civilians resulting in a scandal that was later disproved, and resulted in the team medic’s Mike Rose receiving a Medal of Honor. Barry gives us a blow-by-blow account of the battle and resulting controversy.

Infiltrating the Sicilian Mob: The DEA's Take-Down of the "Pizza Connection" Sep 11, 2023

Kelsi Sheren grew up in rural Canada, joining the Canadian military at 18, where she was trained to fire the powerful M777 howitzer.
Deployed to Afghanistan in 2008, Kelsi was assigned to multi-national teams serving alongside British and American soldiers, responsible for searching Afghan women as the team entered villages, a task forbidden to her male comrades in that Muslim country.
On one mission, the dramatic death of a fellow soldier and friend to an IED triggered a very debilitating case of PTSD. Kelsi's harrowing journey of loss and recovery makes up the dramatic spine of her book, Brass & Unity.

Helping Solve an Infamous Pennsylvania Murder as a Forensic Linguist Nov 21, 2022

Charlene Hummert had been strangled to death using a dog collar when her body was found in her SUV in the parking lot of a grocery store on March 21st 2004. The murderer planted a series of handwritten letters, pretending to be Charlene’s non-existent stalker, in an attempt to draw police attention away from himself. However, due to the expert testimony of a forensic linguist, the jury needed less than an hour to deliberate and convict Charlene’s own husband, Brian, of her gruesome murder. HBH is honored to welcome leading forensic linguistics expert Dr. Robert Leonard.
Dr. Leonard has trained counter intelligence agents for the FBI and other US agencies, as well as for the UK and Canada - even helping out at Disneyland London. His testimony has been pivotal in high-profile cases across the world from California to France, including the notorious and still-unresolved case of JonBenet Ramsey.
Not only does Dr. Leonard have extensive knowledge of over a dozen languages - before his career in academia he opened for Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, as a founding member of well-known rock band She Na Na.

Rapid Fire: A WWII Triumph Led by a Legendary Buffalo Soldier Nov 15, 2022

On the 26th of December 1944, Lt. John Fox commanded a mere 70 Americans - all of whom were black - against a massive German assault. The mountaintop village of Sommocolonia, along Italy’s northern most border, stood between the Germans and the strategic port of Livorno, 40 miles south. If successful, they would have choked off supplies to the Allied forces. In Lt. John Fox’s first and only battle, his heroism stopped that from happening.
John repeatedly called for defensive artillery fire to slow the enemy advance, closer and closer to his own position. The artillery, fired by John’s men of the US Army’s legendary and segregated 92nd Infantry Division, also known as the Buffalo Soldiers, killed over 100 German Soldiers and held the rest off long enough to turn the tide of the battle.
Prior to serving in the Army - because he was an African American - John had to transfer from Ohio State to Wilberforce University, just to be allowed into ROTC training.
In 1996 John was one of seven African Americans
posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the US Military’s Highest Decoration, by President Bill Clinton.

As Afghanistan Fell, Amazing Americans Rose Up and Kept Their Promise Nov 07, 2022

A retired Green Beret simply could not lose another soldier in the Global War on Terror. He called together a group of Special Forces veterans from the Army, Navy and CIA to join him in one last mission. As the US withdrew after 20 years in Afghanistan and the Taliban seized control, their friend, an American-trained Afghan commando, had to be saved. However, that would be just the beginning of their remarkable evacuation efforts. It is our sincere honor to welcome US Army Lt. Col. Scott Mann.
Amidst the total chaos of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, what began as a mission to save their friend Nazam, grew into something far greater. Operating from their own basements and garages in the US, Scott and his team first called their mission Operation Harriet, after Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Then - after using ‘Pineapple’ as a vital code word - it became Task Force Pineapple, and is now well known as Operation Pineapple Express.
By any name, Scott and his amazing group helped more than 500 Afghans escape their collapsing country. They worked tirelessly, until the horrific suicide bombing at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport August 26, 2021.

WWII’s Brutal Battle For The Pacific: Iwo Jima Oct 31, 2022

Some of the most ferocious fighting in recorded human history took place on a tiny Pacific Ocean island between February 19th and March 26th 1945. The United States Navy and Marine Corps invaded Iwo Jima, which was being held by The Imperial Japanese Army, protecting the island’s two separate air fields. Raymond Salvie was one of the incredibly brave Marines who fought and survived these weeks in hell.
This historic interview is one of many conducted by Joe Messineo over the past decade, as part of the Veteran's History Project. We sincerely thank Joe for granting us access and allowing this exciting collaboration with HBH.
The Japanese force of 21,000 was surrounded, outmanned and outgunned by 110,000 American troops. While the invading force was overwhelming, under this 8-square-mile island was more than 11 miles of tunnels, which allowed the Japanese to launch brutal waves of counter-attacks.
Raymond is true American hero who passed away peacefully earlier this year at the age of 97.

A Child Sex Trafficking Survivor Speaks Out Oct 24, 2022

A ten year old Belgian girl found herself sold into a murderous pedophile network by her own mentally ill mother. Despite living in hell, the little girl still loved her mother and believed that someday she would find love in another person as well. Severe and organized child abuse is among our world’s greatest horrors. To such an extent, that it can be hard to comprehend and process. Acknowledging the existence of evils so significant can be the first step towards eradication. For the victims, acknowledging the darkness can be the first step in the healing process.
Anneke bravely recounts her experience. Her strength and poise is enough to give anyone pause, when the reality of what she has survived comes into focus. Despite such suffering at far too young of an age, ultimately she has found remarkable peace and unconditional love.

The Order - aka The Kingston Clan - is a fundamentalist, polygamist, racist, misogynistic, and criminal Mormon cult. They prefer to keep a low-profile. When Jacob Kingston was advised by an Armenian known as ‘The Lion’ to trade in his Toyota Tercel for a Lamborghini, The Order noticed. But their share of the profits - many tens of millions of dollars - was simply too much to do anything about it.
Levon ‘The Lion’ Termendzhyan dropped out of high school at 17 to work at a gas station, and would became a billionaire by the time he was 30. Despite being a fearsome mafia boss, due to his expertise in fuel transportation and delivery, he seemed like the perfect partner for Jacob.
Their criminal operation, which scammed the US government through biodiesel subsidies, generated hundreds of millions of dollars. The scope of protecting their operation and spending their stolen money was spectacular. It spanned from Utah to California to Belize to Turkey, the latter of which where they stashed over $100 million should they ever needed to flee the US. They spent millions more using a fake attorney to pay off an LA Narcotics cop and an FBI counter-terrorism agent, and to buy multiple Bugattis, a Bel-Air mansion, private jets and even a 150-foot yacht.

Rapid Fire: The Longest-Serving Special Forces A-Team Soldier in US History Oct 14, 2022

Master Sergeant Changiz Lahidji has served on more Special Forces A-teams than anyone in history. If that wasn’t impressive enough, he is also the very first Muslim to wear the US Army Special Forces Green Beret.
An absolute legend during his 24 years as a Green Beret, Changiz has served America in every war since Vietnam - including over 100 combat missions in Afghanistan alone. He has traversed dozens of other theaters of operation. His amazing and heroic time in the Army is unlike any other.

Surviving A Murder Attempt and What Happened Next Oct 10, 2022

In the early 1990s, gang warfare and the crack cocaine epidemic took hold of South Los Angeles. The violence spiraled out of control, to a scale which grabbed national attention. During this, the most dangerous period in LA’s history, a criminal with an automatic weapon tried to kill an officer at close range. Fortunately for that officer, the weapon malfunctioned, and a chase began. HBH is honored to welcome retired LA Country Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detective and author: Danny R Smith.
The current crime wave in Los Angeles gets a lot of attention both locally and nationally, as 2021 saw a homicide rate of over 300. However, in 1991 that rate was more than triple with over 1,000 homicides reported.
For Danny, decades surrounded by unspeakable violence affecting colleagues, children, and other innocents took a toll. Long after retiring, the effects remain and like too many others who have put their life on the line, the battle with PTSD continues.

Welcome to The CIA and ‘The Farm’ its Legendary Training Program Oct 03, 2022

Being accepted to work at the CIA is highly difficult. The interview process is long and secretive - and applicants and their references are often vetted without ever knowing it. Once accepted, very few go on to practice espionage. That distinction is reserved for those invited to the CIA’s top secret and legendary training program known as ‘The Farm’. Fewer still actually graduate the program and become Case Officers or as they are most commonly referred: Spies. HBH is excited to welcome back former CIA Case Officer Doug Laux.
Before deploying abroad, or even traveling to Camp Peary - which houses ‘The Farm’ somewhere deep in the forests of Virginia - Doug was required to make enormous personal sacrifices. He had to to lie to family and friends, leaving them all completely in the dark, as to what he was really doing with his life.
This is all the very beginning of a CIA Case Officer’s career. Doug’s career at the agency was a significant one which took him to Afghanistan, Syria and other other hot zones around the world.

Rapid Fire: The Battle of Iwo Jima & A Hero Who Survived Sep 29, 2022

Raymond Salvie enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1944 at the height of World War II. By the end of February 1945 he found himself part of the US military’s massive Pacific Campaign, landing on the beaches of Iwo Jima.
The infamous 5-week battle of Iwo Jima is regarded as some of the fiercest fighting in modern military history. At one point Raymond fired mortars from the same position for 4 straight days. By battle’s end there were 27,000 American casualties and 18,000 Japanese were killed or unaccounted thereafter.
Raymond passed away peacefully earlier this month at the age of 97.

Escaping the Iranian Revolution as a 13 Year-Old Refugee Sep 26, 2022

In the late 1970s Iran fell into violent revolution, as Ayatollah Khomeini installed an Islamic fundamentalist government. This forced millions of citizens opposed to his system of rule to flee their home nation, as refugees. Armin Armiri was only thirteen when his family left the only country they had ever called home.
Forced to spend his teenage years in refugee camps, Armin finally arrived in America in 1989, without money, family, or friends. Starting out as a busboy, he eventually became manager and owner of iconic clubs in both New York and Los Angeles and is now a successful actor, producer, and director. HBH is excited to welcome our guest: Armin Armiri.

The Only Black Woman to Fly the Legendary U-2 Spy Plane Sep 19, 2022

As the Cold War was taking shape in 1953, the United States accepted Lockheed Corporation’s proposal to build the U-2 spy plane, out of absolute necessity. The program has been such a massive success for the US military and CIA, that the plane remains in service today over 64 years later. However, only one black woman has ever flown the U-2. We are honored to welcome United States Air Force Col. Merryl Tengesdal.
Colonel Tengesdal’s remarkable journey began in the Bronx. Despite facing enormous adversity throughout her Air Force career, Merryl surpassed every expectation. She earned her seat in the cockpit of the most successful spy plane in history, more than 70,000 feet above the earth’s surface.
The significance of the now legendary U-2 spy plane, nicknamed “Dragon Lady”, cannot be overstated. The program was such a priority for American national security that it became operational and first took flight in 1955, only two years after it was initially proposed.
Since retiring in 2017, Merryl may no longer be flying more than 13 miles up into the sky, but she has hardly slowed down. She now works as a personal trainer and even starred on the hit CBS reality show, ‘Tough As Nails’.
Merryl Tengesdal is a true inspiration and we highly recommend her book, ‘Shatter the Sky: What Going to the Stratosphere Taught Me About Self-worth, Sacrifice, and Discipline’.

Rapid Fire: 9/11 and the Man the CIA Chose to Lead the Response Sep 16, 2022

Introducing ‘Rapid Fire’, new short-form episodes of Heroes Behind Headlines featuring our host Ralph Pezzullo himself, telling an amazing story about an incredible hero. There is no better person with whom to begin, particularly during the week of September 11, than CIA Case Officer Gary Berntsen.
Gary is the man the CIA picked to lead the first Americans into Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11. Armed with less than 500 total CIA and Special Operations personnel - along with US air power and over $11 million in cash - Gary led one of the most consequential missions in American history.
It is easy to forget in the two decades since, but the initial phase of taking the fight to Al-Qaeda and the Taliban was a massive success. A phase which cumulated before Thanksgiving 2001, with none other than Osama bin-Laden trapped in the mountain pass of Tora Bora.

SEAL Team 6 Helicopter Crash and the Dire Rescue Mission Sep 12, 2022

August 6th, 2011. Wardak Province, Afghanistan. 15 SEAL Team 6 operators and 23 allied personnel traveled on board a helicopter with call sign “Extortion 17”. Tragically, the aircraft was struck by a Taliban-fired rocket-propelled grenade and crashed. Moments later, an urgent rescue mission was launched. HBH is honored to welcome the man who led that mission: author and retired US Army Ranger Sergeant First Class Nicholas Moore.
Every mission and movement of SEAL Team 6, the Navy’s most elite special forces unit, is classified. However, when Extortion 17 went down, all available personnel were alerted to their position.
Nicholas and his team rushed to the location, contending with potential improvised explosive devices along the way. They hoped to help survivors among the 38 passengers of the twin-rotor Boeing CH-47 ’Chinook’ helicopter, including a service dog and its handler.
The crash of Extortion 17 was the largest single loss of life in the history of both SEAL Team 6 and the Afghan War.

Battling Invisible Illness to Battling She-Hulk: Jameela Jamil Aug 29, 2022

Easily breaking bones and having to do “death math” to judge if an activity is safe enough for you on a daily basis creates countless challenges. But that is what living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) requires. To overcome those enormous hurdles, and now star as a supervillain in the brand new Marvel television series ‘She-Hulk: Attorney At Law’ on Disney+, is nothing short of incredible. HBH is excited to welcome actress, activist, writer and comedian, Jameela Jamil.
EDS can be incredibly dangerous. A degenerative disorder, it causes those living with it to experience a shortage of collagen that affects connective tissues, which support vital functions of the body including skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs and bones. Unfortunately, while treatments can help manage symptoms, there is no cure. Jameela is also a survivor of anorexia. While many are familiar with the eating disorder, most people do not realize that it has the highest cause of death for any mental illness.
Through all of these challenges, Jameela’s career has soared. As an actress, despite EDS, she was able to do a number of her own stunts playing the supervillain ‘Titania’ on She-Hulk. As an activist, she is a leading critic of diet culture and body image marketing, particularly on social media - and is currently campaigning to introduce two bills to the United States Senate to combat these destructive influences in society.
Jameela’s spirit is both inspiring and hilarious and we thank her for sharing her incredible story with us.

Exposing a Vicious Human Trafficking Operation Aug 22, 2022

Human trafficking is a $150 billion global industry, which remains severely underreported. One of the epicenters for this barbaric business is Western Africa, where lawlessness has reigned for generations. Fortunately, one man decided to go undercover to try and help take down the people behind these atrocities. On his own and utilizing only a $34 pair of glasses with a hidden camera, he put his life at risk. Four months and 6,000 miles later, he miraculously survived a journey into the darkest corners of humanity. HBH is honored to welcome, directly from Ghana, Emmanuel Azeteng Ayarick.
Living in a two-room hut in Ghana, Azeteng noticed what many people around him had: migrants were disappearing. He knew full well that the people behind this apparent human trafficking operation were without question some of the most vile and wicked on earth. Nevertheless, in an act of unimaginable bravery he decided that, on his own, he would infiltrate a group of migrants to try and gather evidence which he could then deliver to western government authorities.
Azeteng spent his horrifying investigation surrounded by the complete disregard of human rights and frankly human life. Daily, he was face-to-face with murder, gang rape and other atrocities. He was even sold into slavery himself, before an incredible escape.
Human trafficking is responsible for countless deaths, including over 10,000 migrants in the Sahara desert alone, every year. Despite the fact that much of the world moved on long ago, over 24 million people still live in modern day slavery.
We thank Azeteng for his time and his truly remarkable courage, as he is living proof that one man of modest means can make a difference.

Rescuing a CNN Reporter from Behind ISIS Enemy Lines Aug 15, 2022

In November of 2016, Mosul was the epicenter of the intense battle to drive ISIS out of Iraq. CNN reporter Arwa Damon, her cameraman, and an Iraqi security convoy were ambushed and trapped behind ISIS enemy lines. A US Navy SEAL platoon quickly activated to save them. However, as hundreds of ISIS fighters were closing in, the only chance of a rescue was with the assistance of incredibly precise and powerful air strikes. Luckily, embedded with the SEALs that day was our guest: former US Air Force Technical Sergeant Josh Apple.
When most people hear about air strikes they think of missiles launched from miles and miles away. However, when Americans are in contact with the enemy, ‘Danger Close’ air strikes often turn the tide of the battle. These strikes are not possible without the incredible work of a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC), also often referred to as Air Combat Controllers, who are on the ground directing lethal air assets in real-time with remarkable precision. Under-appreciated and under-reported, it is impossible to overstate the critical role JTACs play in US military operations worldwide.
When Josh Apple and the SEALs received word that a reporter and her cameraman were being closed in on in urban Mosul, they knew the stakes were enormous. The race to save them was a race against fatal consequences, which likely would have played out in the very public fashion which ISIS prefers.

From Wall Street to Afghanistan with Special Forces in 2 Weeks Aug 08, 2022

Very few people have a lifestyle in which it is entirely possible to be working on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange, and then two weeks later find yourself on an unbelievable deployment with US Special Forces in Afghanistan. However, as a reservist, that is exactly the life one lives. HBH is excited to welcome Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander Tim Sanchez.
Since 9/11 Tim has had held a number of lucrative positions on and off Wall Street. He has also been a commissioned officer in the US Navy Reserves for more than 19 years - and as a result has been stationed in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Bahrain, amongst others. Tim discusses the story of his encounters with the Taliban in Afghanistan, as well as his struggles with mental health which followed.
The long term effects of military service on reservists are largely underreported and can be even more jarring than those effects on our enlisted men and women. Reservists are often expected to transition in and out of their deployments seamlessly. These transitions carry immense challenges which can change lives forever.

Destroying an Al-Qaeda Sleeper Cell Ready to Attack the US Aug 01, 2022

‘Black Hawk Down’ and the Battle That Never Ends with a Delta Force Legend Jul 25, 2022

On October 3, 1993, a US Army operation in Mogadishu, Somalia, which was supposed to take 45 minutes, lasted for more than 18 hours. Delta Force operators had surgically and swiftly taken high value targets supporting warlord Mohamed Farrah Aydid into custody. However, when a Black Hawk helicopter crashed, the original plan to leave the city had to be abandoned - and then another Black Hawk went down. Tragedy ensued in the form of the longest sustained firefight since Vietnam. HBH is deeply honored to welcome US Army Delta Force Command Sergeant Major Tom Satterly, and his amazing wife Jen.
Off the battlefield, the Satterly's are just as heroic. They are remarkably open about their own mental health struggles and now run the All Secure Foundation, which has helped thousands of combat families with PTSD and other mental health issues which arise from the complex toll of military service.
Even as the overnight battle in Mogadishu was winding down, the violence was still incredibly dangerous, to the extent that Tom and a small group of remaining soldiers could not be driven or air-lifted out of the city. As depicted near the end of the 2001 blockbuster movie ‘Black Hawk Down’ directed by Ridley Scott, Tom and that small group had no choice but to run through RPG and AK-47 fire and out of downtown to safe harbor. That specific action is so legendary in military circles that every year around early October current and former soldiers gather to run what is now known as the ‘Mogadishu Mile’ to pay homage almost 30 years later.
To this day, the public knows very little about the US military’s most secretive and advanced Special Operations Unit, which goes by the official name of US Army First Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D). It is most commonly known as Delta Force, where Tom Satterly spent 20 of his 25 years in the Army. Tom led hundreds of missions, including Operation Red Dawn, which captured none other than Saddam Hussein. He is the recipient of numerous medals including 5 Bronze Stars, with 2 for Acts of Valor.
Tom and Jen Satterly are a true inspiration and we thank them for their groundbreaking work, commitment and courage. Bombing Vital Nazi Targets While Escaping Death in WWII Jul 11, 2022

In World War II, an American bomber pilot’s combat service was to last for 25 missions. However, most did not survive to see their 10th. In October 1943, John ‘Lucky’ Luckadoo began his 22nd mission. The assault on Bremen, Germany was to utilize dense cloud cover to shield the B-17 Flying Fortresses. However, when they arrived, the clouds had disappeared, and 50 American pilots and crew members would lose their lives. HBH is honored to be joined by Kevin Maurer, the author of ‘Damn Lucky: One Man's Courage During the Bloodiest Military Campaign in Aviation History’, and special guest - 100-year-old John ‘Lucky’ Luckadoo.
The Nazi submarine pens outside of Bremen were extremely well-fortified by anti-aircraft munitions and German Luftwaffe fighter planes. Even with the expected cloud cover, the mission was to be harrowing. However, when the expected advantage was nowhere to be found, Second Lieutenant John ‘Lucky’ Luckadoo thought this mission may be his last.
Like 10 million other brave young Americans, ‘Lucky’ answered the call and joined the US military after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Rescuing ‘Lone Survivor’ Marcus Luttrell and Jessica Lynch Jul 04, 2022

Three-Day Firefight in ‘The Valley of Death’ With Tim Kennedy Jun 27, 2022

156 miles of Afghanistan stood between a convoy led by US Army Special Forces and the Forward Operating Base (FOB) they were to resupply. As their destination was in the very heart of Taliban territory, they knew they would be attacked. However, no one could have predicted the absolutely terrifying firefight would last for three days. Afghanistan’s Oruzgan province was so hostile in 2008, that resupplying FOB Anaconda via aircraft was deemed too dangerous. The World’s Only Authenticated Pirate Treasure: Discovering The Shipwreck of ‘The Whydah’ Jun 13, 2022

On April 26, 1717, amidst the golden age of piracy, Captain Samuel ‘Black Sam’ Bellamy tried to navigate a violent storm off of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The flagship of his pirate fleet, The Whydah Gally, shipwrecked and sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean where it stayed until 1984. Now, more than 300 years after the wreck, HBH is excited to be joined by the man who discovered the Whydah, Underwater Archaeologist, Explorer and Author: Barry Clifford.
The only pirate shipwreck in the world whose whose identity is unquestionably authenticated, the Whydah contained a vast treasure including the booty from more than 50 ships which the 140-plus man crew had pirated, as well as 60 cannons.
Surprisingly, the 110-foot Whydah contained much more than its buried treasure. Also excavated was extensive evidence and documentation that perhaps the most progressive, diverse and inclusive democracies in the world at the time were found on-board pirate ships, 59 years before the founding of the United States.
Moreover, due to a promise to his close friend and First Mate, John F. Kennedy Jr., none of the artifacts from the Whyda shipwreck have ever been sold. They are on display at the incredible Whydah Pirate Museum in Yarmouth, Massachusetts.

SAS Rescue of the Iranian Embassy in London - On Live TV Jun 06, 2022

Prior to May 5, 1980, the world was largely unaware that the UK’s SAS (Special Air Service), or any elite special operations units, existed at all. Six days earlier, terrorists had stormed the Iranian Embassy in London and taken 21 hostages. As the situation was being covered on live TV around the world, the SAS attacked the embassy. HBH is honored to be joined by two members of that elite SAS team, Pete Winner and Sekonaia ‘Tak’ Takevisi.
The terrorists had not anticipated a violent response to their actions. However, what they received when UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher gave ‘Operation Nimrod’ the go ahead, was the full force of the most precise military instrument at her disposal: the SAS.
The SAS made an example of the terrorists for all the world to see. As a result, overnight, the SAS, also known as ‘The Regiment’, became famous around the world - a world that did not know soldiers of this caliber existed.

WWII’s Most Infamous Survival Story: The U.S.S. Indianapolis May 23, 2022

The most secretive mission of World War II ended in the largest scale shark attack of all time. The U.S.S. Indianapolis’ mission was so secret, the entire crew was unaware of their cargo: the components of the atomic bomb ‘Little Boy’ which was dropped on Hiroshima. Thus, when the cruiser was sunk by a Japanese torpedo, no one knew, and 900 sailors were left floating in shark-infested waters for four days. HBH is excited to welcome Doug Stanton, author of ‘In Harm’s Way: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis and the Extraordinary Story of Its Survivors’.
On July 30, 1945, after delivering their top secret cargo which would would strike Japan only one week later, the USS Indianapolis was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine. HBH is thrilled to welcome back our good friend, Omar Kahn. Today, Omar tells us of an operation he undertook as a private investigator against the vast smuggling network of Ayub Afridi, the single largest funding source for Al-Qaeda.

9 British SAS v. 400 Communist Rebels: The Epic Battle of Mirbat Apr 04, 2022

Russian and Chinese-backed rebels were making deadly headway in Oman during its Civil War of the early 1970s. In support of the Western-allied Sultan, the British Army secretly deployed nine operators from its most elite unit, the SAS. HBH is honored to have today’s guest, Pete Winner, with a special appearance by Sekonaia ‘Tak’ Takevisi, two of the nine SAS heroes who took on over 400 Omani rebels at the Battle of Mirbat.
At stake on July 19th 1972 was more than just a single battle for a small town on the Gulf of Oman. Due to Mirbat’s geographic significance, had the SAS fallen the communist rebels would have taken hold of the region – and controlled the global shipping routs for Middle Eastern oil.
Statues of individual soldiers are rare, but due to his heroism at the Battle of MIrbat, there are not one but two statues of Sergeant Talaiasi Labalaba. One unveiled in 2009 at the SAS headquarters in Herefordshire, and another in 2018 by Harry and Megan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in Fiji - which at the time of Labalaba’s enlistment was still a British colony.
