Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

September 1987 which was a jam packed month full of metal releases, but the question is was it quantity over quality or the other way around?

We examine and discuss 6 albums this week and most of the albums released during this time fall in the more “generic” category unfortunately.

Savatage, Grim Reaper and Armored Saint all put out albums that could genuinely be somewhat interchangeable in most respects. They aren't ground breaking even by 1987 standards and it leaves the listener wondering if these bands were that game changing back then or if most people didn't care that much for them.

Motorhead releases an album that could also be put under that same speculation, but its fucking Motorhead so they get a pass regardless. We see the pre-birth of what would eventually lead to the creation of Type O Negative with Pete Steeles Hardcore/Punk/Thrash hybrid album “Retaliation” with his band Carnivore. September was a weird month and while these are only our opinions it seems not many of these records have stood the test of time, but the bands themselves have, which speaks volumes.

We also do our weekly breakdown going into new releases and letting you all know about a new and up and coming band formed out of members from Enterprise Earth and I Declare War!

    Albums we discussed:

    • Motorhead - "Rock N Roll"
    • Kreator - "Terrible Certainty"
    • Armored Saint - "Raising Fear"
    • Carnivore - "Retaliation"
    • Grim Reaper - "Rock you to Hell"
    • Savatage - "Hall of the Mountain King"

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

This is a bonus episode this week.

Earlier this week we had a few minutes to talk with Johnny, lead singer of Winds of Plague to discuss their new album being released October 27th.

Johnny talked to us about his start into metal and hardcore, why the band took a hiatus off writing and touring and we delved into how and why they recorded their new album "Blood of my Enemy" and how the band took their time to write and record and just decided to have fun with this record as well as the importance of really writing something worthy of their discography and to push themselves as musicians.

    Show notes

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

This week we venture ever forward into August of 1987.

This is the month the Black Metal genre as we know it came into existence with the Mayhem EP "Deathcrush" forever changing the landscape of not only the underground metal scene, but how metal as a whole would be viewed for decades onward.

Then we talk some new releases that have come out over the past couple weeks and what Matt and I thought of them (Hint, theyre all fantastic)

And finally, we end on Cacophony's "Speed Metal Symphony" and album that showcases two of the best virtuoso guitar players to ever live, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman. With that album comes a tragic tale of Jason Becker and his diagnosis of ALS and how he continues to write music and maintain his positive attitude to this day!

    Albums we discussed this week:

    • Mayhem - "Deathcrush EP"
    • Cacophony - "Speed Metal Symphony"

    June 1987 Sep 10, 2017
    Show notes

Welcome to this weeks episode of The Heavy Metal History Podcast.

On this weeks episode we go back to June of 1987 (We skipped June somehow) In June we see a crossover band make waves with their 2nd album, and album that took almost 4 years to get out and they even alienated quite a bit of their original fan base with just this release. Whether thats because their listeners weren’t ready for musical growth or the album was just bad is for you to decide.

Out of the ashes of Black Flag Henry Rollins forges the Rollins Band and releases a blistering Metallic Hardcore album for our ears once again by will of his insane work ethic changing the face of music with this release.

The Swiss band Celtic Frost opens up their 3rd album in one of the strangest ways imaginable by having a cover song as the 1st track on the album. And its not a good cover song either, we don't know the reasoning behind WHY they chose to do this, but if I ever have the chance to talk to Tom G. Warrior, you can bet I will find out why.

We also are trying out a new segment called "The Weekly Breakdown" where we discuss new releases and tell you about the new record reviews on the website.

Albums we discussed this week were:

    • Suicidal Tendencies - "Join the Army"
    • Rollins Band - "Life Time"
    • Celtic Frost - "Into the Pandemonium"

Some Kind of Monster Part Two Aug 19, 2017
    Show notes

Welcome back to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History!

We pick up about an hour and 13 minutes into the documentary "Some Kind of Monster" and manage to power through this long and arduous film. Laughs were had, Lar's eminem hair style gets made fun of a lot and we give Hetfield his due for getting clean.

And we do the math on how rich Metallica probably is.
