    Show notes

Welcome to this weeks 100th episode of Heavy Metal History!! My illustrious and legendary guest this week almost needs no introduction, but none the less here it is!

I got to speak at length with Dan Swanö, prolific sound engineer and owner of Unisound studios. Dan has worked with, recorded and played with some of the biggest bands that have come out of Sweden such as Dissection, Opeth, Dawn, Dark Funeral, Omnium Gatherum and Marduk, just to name a few. He’s played in bands such as Katatonia, Bloodbath, Edge of Sanity and Nightingale.

Dan was gracious enough with his time to talk to me all about fostering the Swedish metal scene, how he got his start in the recording business and where his passion came from for it. We discuss Edge of Sanity’s “Purgatory Afterglow“ celebrating a 25 year anniversary as well as Bloodbath’s “Nightmares Made Flesh“ Celebrating a 15 year anniversary.

Dan’s influence on the metal scene as a whole is legendary in it’s own right and should not be over looked so enjoy this episode and all that Dan had to tell me about his early days!

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

My guest this week is vocalist Dylan Walker of the band Full of Hell. Dylan came on the podcast to talk about the bands upcoming album “Weeping Choir” which comes out on Relapse May 17th. We delved deep into the bands history as well as those moments in a bands career where things aren’t going the best and how to stay motivated and keep pushing forward despite those set backs.

We also discuss at length collaborations between Full of Hell and other bands and ruminate as to why more bands don’t do collaborations and why it may or may not work for every band but works for Full of Hell. And finally we discuss the art direction behind “Trumpeting Ecstasy” and “Weeping Choir” and even talk a bit about David Lynch!

    April 1994 May 03, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

This week we delve into April of 1994, the month the world collectively mourned the loss of Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana, one of the main contributors of the grunge era and genre, a genre that most in the scene at the time believe “killed” heavy metal.

Heavy Metal was in fact not dead nor was it lying dormant, the genre was hastily evolving despite the opposing musical genres being a force of mainstream success and salient popularity. Yes bands weren’t selling millions of records like the aforementioned Nirvana, but that’s never what the genre has been or ever will be about.

Metal has forged its own contorted and wry path through the mainstream, creating our own titans and gods of the genre. And while the rest of the world mourned one musician, heavy metal never stopped advancing its brutality to the underground. This is the genre gnashing its teeth against the prey.

    Records I discussed:

    • In Flames – “Lunar Strain”
    • Abruptum – “In Umbra Malitiae Ambulabo, in Aeternum in Triumpho Tenebraum”
    • Oppressor – “Solstice of Oppression”
    • Rollins Band – “Weight”
    • Cannibal Corpse – “The Bleeding”
    • Visceral Evisceration – “Incessant Desire For Palatable Flesh”
    • Burzum – “Hvis lyset tar oss”

    Show notes

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

My guests this week were Bjorn Dannov and Natahn Gearhart, Vocalist and Guitarist of Arizona based Death Metal band Vehemence. 15 years ago the band released “Helping the World to See” a completely under rated gem in the world of melodic Death Metal.

Bjorn and Nathan came on the podcast to talk about the writing and recording of that album as well as other insights to the bands history and final album that was released back in 2015. The band is no longer “active” but you can still follow them on social media HERE and be on the lookout for both guys new projects in the near future.

Paul Ryan (Origin) Apr 22, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to this weeks bonus episode of the podcast!

My guest this week was Paul Ryan, guitar player that formed Kansas based Tech-Death band Origin. Paul came on the podcast to discuss the “Origins of Origin” (yes pun somewhat intended) He takes me through the early days of the band and the recordings that were Origin before it was even given that name. Currently Paul has re-recorded all the material from that time period, its called "Abiogenesis - A Coming Into Existence" out May 3rd worldwide via Agonia Records.

Revisit the Origins of ORIGIN with the new single "Mind Asylum": the pre-ORIGIN era, never-before released track!

"Abiogenesis - A Coming Into Existence" was recorded and recreated from the original 1991-1996 era that preceded ORIGIN's official formation. The album features never-before released tracks, that laid foundations to one of America's top death metal purveyors. The tracks on "Abiogensis" were recreated to the best of his ability, by founding ORIGIN member & mastermind Paul Ryan, who recorded all instruments himself, between 2013 and 2018.

My guests this week were Adrian, Max and Jason, members of the Illinois based Death Metal band Warforged. The guys came on the podcast to talk about their beginnings as musicians, their first full length album “I:Voice” coming out May 10th through The Artisan Era.

Adrian takes me through his extremely unique writing process of the bands record and how all the members came together to write and record his vision.

We also talk about road stories and how the band got robbed in S.F., keeping yourself entertained while on tour, I also may or may not be the new drummer (sorry Jason) and all in all we have a ton of laughs over the course of the 2 1/2 hour podcast!

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

My guest is lead vocalist Mike Paparo of the band Inter Arma. Mike came on the podcast to discuss the new album “Sulphur English” to be released this April 12th through Relapse records.

Mike and I discussed the new direction of the album and how the band manages to defy what critics and fans alike expect from them, and with “Sulphur English” it is no different, its a genuine juxtaposition to the band previous album “Paradise Gallows” and yet the two albums seem equally as cohesive.

Mike takes us through his writing process and what authors inspire him as well as what he reads to get inspired. Thanks for listening!

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

My guests this week on the podcast were guitarist Nick Padovani and bassist Hugo Doyon-Karout (also of Montreal based Tech-Death band Beyond Creation) Nick’s band Equipoise is almost like a “super group” of top tier musicians in the Tech Death scene. Comprised of members Stevie Boiser (Inferi), Jimmy Pitts (Eternity’s End), Chason Westmoreland (Burning the Masses, The Faceless) Phil Tougas (First Fragment, Chthe'ilist) and Sanjay Kumar (Wormhole) with all these amazing musicians coming together to create the band’s first full length, “Demiurgus” out on The Artisan Era now!

While talking to Nick and Hugo we delve into their early influences as musicians and then discuss all the intricacies and planning that went into writing and recording this album due to the musicians involved living all over the place. We also discuss that “Demiurgus” is a concept album based of the anime “Full Metal Alchemist” go check out “Demiurgus” below and please buy their record!

    March 1994 Mar 29, 2019
    Show notes

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

I take you through March of 1994, which is as eclectic as it is justifying groundbreaking. Pantera releases their highest selling album in their discography while GWAR finally make their mark on the scene releasing a now legendary album in their discography.

Meanwhile, the once glamorous kings of the L.A. hair metal scene, Motley Crue have been dethroned and left behind after Vince Neal leaves the band, showing that the metal scene and music has no place for their out dated style of music.

New Death metal bands push the boundaries of the genre by incorporating various elements of symphonic and orchestral elements into the music and the band that birthed Pirate Metal puts out a valiant yet ultimately failed record here in 1994.

    Records I discussed:

    • Obsessed - “The Church Within”
    • Pungent Stench - Club Mondo Bizarre For Members Only
    • Nailbomb - Point Blank
    • Motley Crue - Self Titled
    • Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
    • Running Wild - Black Hand Inn
    • Gutted - Bleed for us to Live
    • GWAR - This Toilet Earth
    • Bestial Warlust - Vengeance War till Death
    • Tankard - Two Faced
