We talk about the political messages of the album enshrouded in Magic the Gathering references. This was a great deep conversation that lasted almost 2 hours and we really get into all kinds of subject matter about the bands ethos. We end it all up discussing our love and passion for Magic the Gathering.

We also just have a general good time and some laughs about the best song on the album "House of Ideas" and that you should in FACT, only listen to the first half of the album and not even bother with the rest.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guest is Zak Vargas from the now defunct band Elysia. Zak came on the podcat to talk the 18 year history of the bands debut album "Masochist" which is currently getting a remaster\reissue treatment on May the 10th.

Zak took me through the entire history of the record track by track discussing each song as well as their timeline with demos and other songs and how the reissue came to be over the past few years. We also discuss a lot of the lyrical themes and even breifly touch on "Lion of Judas" and the bands break up.

Info - After having smashed prevailing standards for the style with their unique approach on their highly lauded previous release, Replicant take things further still with their new full length, finding ways to make their music even more convoluted and impactful while retaining their trademark dissonant and catchy sound. They've found ways to add new aspects to it without hampering the momentum, constantly changing things up with the listener's body still lashing uncontrollably. The songs veer off in their own unexpected, thrilling directions while upholding the inherent semblance of groove, only to reconnect later with greater force. Things seem to add up and make sense as the album progresses, an ostensibly innocuous mechanical contraption getting constant upgrades to become potentially world-ending. There's fire in the songwriting, the members refusing to succumb to the lull of complacency and working furiously, constantly on the songs to elevate them to a rarefied category. It sees the stature of the band rising, the sound evolving methodically and convincingly, the album giving more than what could be expected from them having already established their identity, and in turn setting new standards for others yet again.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guests this week are Cory Smarsh and Jacob Toy, guitarists in Deathcore/Death Metal band Signs of the Swarm. Cory and Jacob take me through their roots of heavy metal and the records and bands that got them into the genre, we even have a similar band that got us into the genre, which was Hatebreed. The two tell me about the writing process for this record and how there is no shortage of inspiration or riffs between the two guitarists and how they're always writing. This album really see’s the band step more into the Death Metal realm and Cory and Jacob told me how they wanted to really just “Write this album for ourselves” the two are fairly young and the band is only on their 3rd record so the sky is the limit with where these guys can go in the future.

The band is about to embark on the “Bloodletting North America” Tour with Disentomb, Visceral Disgorge, Organectomy, Continuum and Mental Cruelty. The tour starts September the 13th and runs through October the 13th.

The bands album “Vital Deprivation” comes out October 11th on Unique Leader records.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History, indeed, it is a very special episode for me personally and I hope my listeners also enjoy this episode. My guests were Ryan Morgan and Jesse Zaraska, Guitarist and Vocalist of Melodic Hardcore band Misery Signals. Ryan and Jesse were grateful enough to give me some of their time to discuss the 15 year anniversary of one of the most prolific albums to be released in the genre, their album “Of Malice and the Magnum Heart”. Ryan and Jesse take me through the early days of the band, a history which most people familiar with Misery Signals already know, but for the sake of the podcast and the history I was after, it seemed apt to start there and work our way into the writing and recording of the record. Jesse talks about “The Year Summer Ended in June” and the story behind that song, which, again, most fans of the band are familiar with. We discuss how the band wrote closely together for this record and how the writing process was relatively quick and very inspired. They also talk to me about recording with Devin Townsend and how it was a dream of Jesse’s to work with “Hevy Devy” most of his life up to that point. WE touch on the Malice X tour that coincided with the albums 10 year anniversary along with Mathew Mixon’s excellent Documentary about the album and the band called “ Yesterday was Everything” All that and some ever so slight hints about new material thats been in the works for the band.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. I delve into May of 1994 where we see one of the last albums to be released from the 2nd wave of Norwegian black metal, an album that took over 7 years to be written, recorded and released. All beset within the mayhem of a suicide, a murder a litany of burned churches and all while fostering a new genre into the zeitgeist of heavy metal. Elsewhere in the world far from the turmoil and elitism of the early black metal scene other disparate genres begin fusing sonic elements outside of their traditional soundscapes. Genres like Death metal and Grindcore coalesce elements to create a grandiose ferocity of noise and Non-metal influences like orchestral and classical music mix into the genre to create a more epic atmosphere of heaviness.

Welcome to this weeks bonus episode of the podcast. My guest is Davide Tiso, guitarist formerly of the band Ephel Duath and now currently spearheading Howling Sycamore.

Davide came on to give me a bit on insight to this current musical project along with its deeper intrinsic meaning behind the concept of the bands albums. We talk about the members in the band that he works with that have come from other well known acts like Necrophagist and Dangerous Toys. Theres discussion of the contributions to the record with former guests of this podcast Kevin Hufnagel and Marty Friedman, as well as working with Jamie King!

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guest for this episode was Cameron Porras, guitar player for tech-death band Inanimate Existence. Cameron came on the podcast to talk about the bands recent album “Clockwork” which was released May the 10th. We also discuss the early 2000’s era of finding music as well as illegal downloading and file sharing, which Cameron shares a fairly realistic view and opinion on the state of it, especially for someone who is in a band and wants people to buy his music. We go off on all kinds of tangents about “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and other topics. If you havent heard “Clockwork” yet, do yourself a favor and go buy it now! This episode was originally recorded a few weeks before the release of “Clockwork” and was scheduled to go out before the album came out, but due to some recording errors it got extremely delayed, but I hope you all still enjoy it and I appreciate Cameron taking the time to do the podcast.

My guest this week was an old friend/acquaintance from my touring days, Mike McKenzie, guitarist of The Red Chord and currently in Wear Your Wounds. Mike has a ton of other porjects and has stayed immensely busy with music since The Red Chord ended. Some of his projects include Stomach Earth, Nightkin, and Beyond the Sixth Seal. We discuss ALL those projects as well as The Red Chord’s final album “Fed Through the Teeth Machine” celebrating a 10 year anniversary. Mike is such an under rated and talented guitar player that his accoladed and bands he’s played with should speak for themselves. Mike took me through working with his newest project, the Jacob Bannon (Converge) spearheaded “supergroup” Wear Your Wounds, which along with Mike and Jacob includes, Adam McGrath (Cave-In) Sean Martin (Hatebreed) and Chris Maggio (Trap Them) that new album will see release later this year on Deathwish Inc.

#100 Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath) May 13, 2019

Welcome to this weeks 100th episode of Heavy Metal History!! My illustrious and legendary guest this week almost needs no introduction, but none the less here it is!

I got to speak at length with Dan Swanö, prolific sound engineer and owner of Unisound studios. Dan has worked with, recorded and played with some of the biggest bands that have come out of Sweden such as Dissection, Opeth, Dawn, Dark Funeral, Omnium Gatherum and Marduk, just to name a few. He’s played in bands such as Katatonia, Bloodbath, Edge of Sanity and Nightingale.

Dan was gracious enough with his time to talk to me all about fostering the Swedish metal scene, how he got his start in the recording business and where his passion came from for it. We discuss Edge of Sanity’s “Purgatory Afterglow“ celebrating a 25 year anniversary as well as Bloodbath’s “Nightmares Made Flesh“ Celebrating a 15 year anniversary.

Dan’s influence on the metal scene as a whole is legendary in it’s own right and should not be over looked so enjoy this episode and all that Dan had to tell me about his early days!

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. This week we delve into April of 1994, the month the world collectively mourned the loss of Kurt Cobain of the band Nirvana, one of the main contributors of the grunge era and genre, a genre that most in the scene at the time believe “killed” heavy metal. Heavy Metal was in fact not dead nor was it lying dormant, the genre was hastily evolving despite the opposing musical genres being a force of mainstream success and salient popularity. Yes bands weren’t selling millions of records like the aforementioned Nirvana, but that’s never what the genre has been or ever will be about. Metal has forged its own contorted and wry path through the mainstream, creating our own titans and gods of the genre. And while the rest of the world mourned one musician, heavy metal never stopped advancing its brutality to the underground. This is the genre gnashing its teeth against the prey.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. I take you through March of 1994, which is as eclectic as it is justifying groundbreaking. Pantera releases their highest selling album in their discography while GWAR fianlly makes their mark on the scene releasing a now legendary album in their discography. Meanwhile, the once glamorous kings of the L.A. hair metal scene, Motley Crue have been dethroned and left behind after Vince Neal leaves the band, showing that the metal scene and music has no place for their out dated style of music. New Death metal bands push the boundaries of the genre by incorporating various elements of symphonic and orchestral elements into the music and the band that birthed Pirate Metal puts out a valiant yet ultimately failed record here in 1994.

Mike came on to talk about the 25 year anniversary of GWARS 1994 album “This Toilet Earth” Mike gives so many details and insights to how the record was recorded including a harrowing story of how guitarist Pete Lee was tragically shot (and lived) during the recording sessions for the record. Mike and I also discuss the bands legacy and moving forward after the loss of Dave Brockie as well as Cory Smoot. The band has somehow managed to keep forging ahead despite all the diversity and tragedy in their 30+ year long sonic invasion of our smelly and putrid planet called Earth.

#88 February 1994 Feb 22, 2019

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. On this weeks episode we we see the rise of the 2nd wave of Black Metal. February of 1994 less than 6 months after the murder of Mayhem guitarist Euronymous and almost a year after the Norwegian scene began it’s infamous assault into the mainstream with murder and arson leaving the music ancillary to the controversy itself. Some of the most prolific albums would be released in this month. Darkthrone would keep the “spirit” of Black Metal with their lo-fi intensity while also stoking the fires of controversy with anti Semitic alliances. Emperor would push the genre forward with their technicality and proficiency as song writers. Enslaved bring to to the genre their own unique blend of Black Metal song writing pushing song times to new lengths. Meanwhile in England, far removed from the Norwegian scene, Cradle of Filth forges their own unique style of Black Metal built upon gothic influences. This was truly the time of Black Metal, only to still be enshrouded by the allure of death and fire, the music becoming another victim in it’s history.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guest this week is founding member and guitarist, David Gregor, of the legendary underground Milwaukee Wisconsin based Death Metal band Morta Skuld.

Morta Skuld was conceived in the early 90’s during the Death Metal explosion in America. The band achieved moderate success between 1993 and 1997 but somewhere along the line got a bit lost and relegated to a more obscure band amongst history in the flood of other releases and bands over the years. In 1994, less than a year after releasing their first record “Dying Remains” Morta Skuld released their 2nd record “As Humanity Fades” a record that is inherently heavy as it is devastating. For a release that came out in 1994 it showed that Death Metal was far from dead and in this episode David joins me on the podcast to discuss the making of “As Humanity Fades” and its 25 year legacy as and album and as a band. This conversation about the album was to go into the February 1994 episode, but I felt like giving David his own full episode here because of all the behind the scenes making of the album and the bands history he shared.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. Our first history episode of 2019! January 1994.

1994 is often derided as the “death” of Heavy Metal, and while it seems like a lot of bands struggled around this time to compete with the massive popularity of Grunge, a whole wave of new music was being birthed into the world, Black Metal makes its ominous and controversial mark on the world, the height of Swedish Melo Death is massively influencing and shaping bands and genres for years to come and while the genre and releases show no signs of stopping some of the releases put out during this time are less than stellar, but there’s also some of the most prolific albums of some bands careers that were put out in 1994.

January of 1994 shows the diversity that is now prevalent in Heavy Metal, bands from all over the world have solidified their status as masters of their genre. Black Sabbath and Dio both put out albums against each other after a falling out due to a reunion show that left Ronnie James Dio feeling unwelcome, that left Black Sabbath to once again use Tony martin and release and album that isn’t the best, but certainly not their worst album in their lengthy discography. The masters of Doom Prong put out one of their most seminal works and unleash a whole new wave of heaviness through unconventional means. Swedish Melodic bands are enrapturing ears all across the world as Dawn and Merciless put forth their own works into the world. And the first black metal band to put out a record in 1994 would be Satyricon, who would actually out out TWO albums in the same year, with Shadowthrone being release later in 1994.

#84 December 1998 Jan 26, 2019

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History!

Here we are the final episode covering 1998, the year has seen the entire genre change and blow up to such epic proportions. The new millennium will change things even further, but we arent there yet! December of 1998 is the month where barely any records get released because one of two things happen, either it gets forgotten by the next year, or its not out long enough at the end of the year for people to give it a chance and these records are no exception. Nightwish releases their most experimental album with “Oceanborn” Trail of Tears put out a masterful funeral doom ladened record. Ulver completely changes genres which causes them to be dropped from Century Media. By releasing this album it shows Ulver’s true musicianship and experimental side, which unfortunately alienated a lot of their original fans who only wanted a black metal album, but the band didn’t want to make that kind of music anymore and have since left the genre behind. Extol, a band from Sweden meshes an extreme style of music with the antithesis of what its about, being one of the first christian black metal bands, yes, you read that right…and finally I close out the episode with 2 addendum records that were omitted while doing research earlier in the year.

We've had quite a year and we cant thank you all enough for listening and supporting us and what we do! December, just like November only saw a handful of releases from bands. Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

My guests this week on the podcast is the 3 piece band Wristmeetrazor, I got to talk with all the members of the band and this podcast is the ONLY place you’ll get to hear an interview with all of them. We talk about the history of the band and how all the members came together, their “throwback” influences with early screamo bands like City of Caterpillar, Pg.99, Kodan Armada, Orchid as well as early 00’s Metalcore like Norma Jean, Zao and the like. The band wears their influences on their sleeve but have crafted a unique sound album full of emotion and authenticity that is lost on a lot of bands in some respects. In fact my favorite part about talking with these guys was to hear their passion and enthusiasm for the music and wanting to play shows and tour. Its something that I dont hear too often from most bands and to hear that was refreshing. We also talk about how all the members learned their respective instruments. The writing and recording process and what it’s like to be on Prosthetic and how the plan was to release their newest album “Misery Never Forgets” regardless of whether they were going to be signed or not as the band are no strangers to the DIY scene. I appreciate the band taking their time to do the podcast and I hope my listeners take a chance on a newer band thats resurrecting and old sound and making it new again.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guest for this episode of the podcast is Kyle Rasmussen, Guitar player/Vocalist of the Death Metal Band Vitriol, based out of Oregon. When writing up the description for this episode I barely knew what to include or cover about our conversation in this episode, Kyle was easily one of the most interesting, honest and eloquent person to talk to and while we do spend about an hour talking about music and the band, the last hour is filled with Kyle’s personal struggle with addiction and his complete transparency of what he dealt with after an intense surgery almost took his life and was left addicted to pain killers. I feel like thats about all I need to say and I hope that Kyle’s story and honesty will help anyone who listens to this that may be struggling with their own addictions as well. I cant thank him enough for the way he approached this story and his willingness to discuss a serious issue.

#80 Pantera: Part Two (1989-1994) Dec 08, 2018

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. This weeks episode we pick back up with Part two of the history of the band Pantera. This episode is due to be released on an ominous day, the "deathiversary" of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbot. Not as a means to talk about the loss we as the metal community suffered that day back in 2004, but to honor not only his memory, but his brother Vinnie who passed earlier this year. And most importantly to remember the accolades and achievements the band reached during their time. This episode goes into the years between 1989 and 1994 of the band where I talk about "Cowboys from Hell" and "Vulgar Display of Power" where the band is at their creative peak and they would change the face of metal as we know it. Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guest this week is Nick Lee, guitar player of New York based band Moon Tooth! Nick’s intriguingly unique guitar playing style struck me immediately upon hearing the bands 2016 release “Chromaparagon” and if I had the podcast going back then I would have had him on immediately. But here we are two years later and the stars aligned with Nick coming on the podcast to discuss the bands upcoming release “Crux”

Nick and I discuss working with Mark Morton from Lamb of God as well as “Machine” aka Gene Freeman for the pre-production work on “Crux” we discuss many other topics like his guitar playing, his early metal influences and the history and beginnings of the band Moon Tooth!

The word “Crux” is defined as the “decisive or most difficult point of an issue.” The album ‘Crux’ tells the story of the band at this crucial point: where the past must die so new life can begin.

‘Crux’ is due out early 2019 on the soon to be launched, Modern Static Records. Official release date and pre-order info TBA very soon.

#78 Jeff Wilson (Chrome Waves / ex-Wolvhammer) Nov 27, 2018

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guest this week on the podcast was a long time coming, Jeff Wilson formerly of Wolvhammer, Nachmystium, Abigail Williams, Doomsday and about a ton of other recording projects. Earlier in the year Jeff was due to be on the podcast when his band Wolvhammer were about to release their album "The Monuments of Ash & Bone" but due to scheduling it never came to fruition....until now!! Jeff came on the podcast to talk about leaving Wolvhammer and now refocusing on a past project he did called Chrome Waves (that also included past guest Stavros Giannapolous!). Jeff holds very little back in this candid and no bullshit discussion about the bands he was in and the realistic nature of touring and writing records. Its a solid episode to end the month on and really shows what a lot of musicians deal with on the more personal side of things when not playing and writing songs. Jeff is a monster though when it comes to music and hes always writing new material.

#65 Imperial Triumphant Jul 02, 2018

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guests this week were 2 out of 3 members of New York based Avant-garde Black Metal Band Imperial Triumphant, guitarist and bass player Ilya and Steve Blanco. Born in the metropolis: Imperial Triumphant embodies the sounds of New York. The chaos, the menagerie, the perils and majesty of the greatest city on earth. We portray this great juxtaposition between high society luxury coexisting with absolute filth and urban decay. Our city is like the corpse of a giant. What was once so bright, grand and spectacular, is now filled with greedy maggots writhing towards their share of 'success'. We don't support it nor are we against. We only play the sounds of the New York City as we hear them. Ilya and Steve spoke at length about their non metal influences with jazz and classical compositions, as well as their roots in heavy metal. The conversation circled around what influences the two members and how they push the boundaries of modern metal with the classically infused and inspired compositions, which Ilya went to music school for. We start with the bands early beginnings inspired by and emulating Norwegian Black Metal Bands and the transformation over the years into a sound only current style. The band is breaking new ground and pushing the genre forward into a new era which I am excited for, this is thinking music, dense with layers and ambience unlike most things out now. The bands imminent release "Vile Luxury" will be out July 13th through Gilead Media Records.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. This week I got to speak with Jadran "Conan" Gonzalez, lead guitar player and founding member of the band ExMortus. Welcome to this weeks (2nd) episode of Heavy Metal History!

April of 1998 part two, we pick up right where we left off with 6 more devastating albums to discuss, this is the month of Death Metal! Incantation release a seminal Death Metal record with “Diabolical Conquest” really pushing the genre into a whole new direction and sound all during the same time when the band Nile uses the influence of ancient Egypt to create a whole new sound and style of Death Metal as well. The legendary Suffocation decide to break up (Later would be called a hiatus) by putting out one of the most devastating EP’s ever released. Cephalic Carnage infuse a multitude of genres but merge mostly Grindcore and Death Metal to such a horrific and devastating degree with their “Conforming to Abnormality” album. Children of Bodom (who are almost literally children) release an album through sheer determination, technical prowess and Alexi Laiho would later become one of the best “Modern” guitar players in the genre. And of course…another Power Metal release, this time from Blind Guardian who use the inspiration of J.R.R Tolkien and Lord of the Rings to make an album.

#56 April 1998 Part One May 14, 2018

Welcome to this weeks episode of The Heavy Metal History Podcast!

This week we discuss and get into April of 1998 where we finally have an excellent cohesion of quality AND quantity of records released. The Chasm put forth their brand of Mexican Death Metal, Skinless refine the Brutal Death Metal genre. One of the most legendary Hardcore bands Converge release one of their finest albums and would go on to evolve and get better with every subsequent record released. Virgin Steel release a semi concept album infused with Power Metal. One of the more under rated and forgotten Cannibal Corpse records was released, it was their 2nd record with newest vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher and first with newest guitarist Pat O’Brien, seriously just listen to the massive riff in the song “From Skin to Liquid” and Katatonia would take an entire genre into their hands with the release of their album “Discouraged Ones” . and this is just PART ONE! We will continue next week with even more releases in Part Two.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History the Podcast!

March of 1998 saw a plethora of releases from legacy bands as well as birthing new genres into the world. Deeds of Flesh brings Brutal Death Metal into the world, Training for Utopia bring the early days of the Christian Metalcore movement, Tristania try to perfect and refine their sound on “Widows Weeds”. Rob Halford, after leaving Judas Priest starts a solo project with the help of Trent Reznor, John 5 and a few more prolific artists to put out an Industrial Metal album with his group 2wo. Motorhead do their best to stay relevant by rushing out an album that none of the band even like to talk good about. German Thrash band Tankard show where Municipal Waste got their whole “schtick” from. Even MORE power metal from bands like Symphony X and Rage. Iron Maiden put out an album that not even our analysis and research can fully explain the reasoning behind this terrible terrible album and we ask how much would you have to pay Dustin to listen to Iron Maiden's "Virtual XI" (A lot). Finally we round out the episode discussing one of the best Black Metal albums released in 1998 with Marduk’s Nightwing and speaking of the band who are recently in the news, we get into the dirt about the current climate in metal, where so called "journalists" (Metalsucks) along with the likes of ANTIFA have taken it upon themselves to perpetuate witch hunts of black metal and metal in general, about political correctness with feigned SJW outrage. #54 Ged Cartwright & Theo Le Derf (A Cunning Man) Apr 29, 2018

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. My guests this week are Ged Cartwright and Theo Le Derf, members of the band A Cunning Man. They are a Two man Scottish Metal project blending a variety of melodic styles.

A Cunning Man began life as a one-man metal project created by composer and vocalist Ged Cartwright. Guitarist Theo Le Derf joined the project in early 2017 and brought with him a unique style and contrasting influences. Whilst the song writing remains firmly rooted in Extreme and Melodic Metal, elements such as Modern Classical, Post-Rock and Jazz differentiate the sound from others within the genre.This is also true of the distinctively Scottish approach to the lyrics, instrumentation and storytelling.The duos ultimate ambition is to immerse the listener in the concept of A Cunning Man."To Heal a Broken Body" is A Cunning Mans second EP and was entirely self-funded, recorded and produced. The EP was released independently on 23/02/2018 via Bandcamp.

Classifying this band in terms of genre isn't easy, but there are metal influences involved. Ged and Theo came on to talk about their influences, Ged has a more straightforward metal connection, but Theo's was equally as interesting as he actually isn't really into the metal scene in a direct way. Theo's influences are more jazz centric as well as influences by classic guitar players like Hendrix. A Cunning Man is a newer band and I really wanted to talk to these guys about their music and for people to check them out and listen to something different and unique that's out there.

Aggressor and I talked about the bands early days of really expanding on the sound created by bands like Venom and running with it to forge an entirely new cross over genre. We spoke about their 1998 album "Deep Tracts of Hell" (which will be on an upcoming history episode) their new album "Aura Noire" the meaning behind that title and what keeps the band and Aggressor making music after all these years.

This week we move forward to February of 1998. '98 is shaping up to be quite a year for metal releases, February alone has 2 of my favorite bands and records being released. Primal Fear continue the trend of Power Metal, Amon Amarth storm onto the scene with their epic and unique sound of Scandinavian “Viking” Metal. And one of the most under rated albums of all time, Morbid Angels “Formulas Fatal to the Flesh” was released, this album showcased such a ferocity and heaviness that is almost unparalled. And the legendary King Diamond released one of his best sounding albums with Voodoo and even has a guest solo with the legendary Dimebag Darrel.

And if you recall our February 1987 episode where we did a dramatic reading of King Diamond's "Abigail" (How cool that "Voodoo" was also released in February nearly 20 years later) we once again will do a dramatic reading, this time of King Diamond's "Voodoo" My friend Blaine, who was last heard on our Halloween special joins us for the reading. And with this one, I had to make sure it was a special one and man did we score a hell of an interview. My guest this week is Matron Thorn, guitar player of the death metal band Ævangelist. We talked a myriad of topics, including grunge, the current heavy metal climate, how Matron writes his songs in terms of "inspiration" and whats next for Ævangelist. That and SO much more on this episode, we get deep, we get philosophical and we really have an excellent conversation. Our 50th episode couldn't have been better.

Ævangelist are an American death metal/black metal band that integrates avant-garde and experimental elements into their music. The band is primarily composed of Ascaris and Matron Thorn, though additional musicians take on drum and guitar duties for live performances. The band was formed in 2010 by Ascaris and Matron Thorn and they have released four full-length albums and five EPs to date. Their latest album 'Enthrall to the Void of Bliss' was released on October 9, 2015 through 20 Buck Spin. They are due to release a split EP with French avant garde black metal band Blut Aus Nord on June 17, 2016 through Debemur Morti Productions titled 'Codex Obscura Nomina'.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History the Podcast!

This years content of the podcast see’s Dustin and Matt dissecting the year 1998. A year where you get a full scope of almost every genre thats been invented, Power Metal dominated the releases, Nu Metal is just on the horizon, while Death and Black Metal take a little bit of a back seat to how many bands/releases were put out. January of 1998 is a mixed bag of releases, the year starts off with German Power Metal band Edguy releasing their 2nd album and showing the growth of their sound within a year, an Indonesian band Kekal fuses Black Metal with their own unique sound of metal to create something very unique in its execution. Another Power Metal band from Denmark, Mercenary released their first album falling in line with a myriad of other artists that would unleash Power Metal into the world. Virgin Black released an EP that would show a hint of how massive the band would grow to be with their Funeral Doom sound they would become the epitome of. Angelcorpse fuses Thrash and Black Metal to make a decent but over all underwhelming album and Dark Order from Australia make the Thrash Metal genre their own with an Aussie infused twist.

#45 Brody Uttley (Rivers of Nihil) Mar 05, 2018

Welcome to this weeks episode of The Heavy Metal History Podcast! My guest this week is Brody Uttley, lead guitar player for the tech-death metal band Rivers of Nihil. Formed in 2009 by guitarist Brody Uttley, bassist/lyricist Adam Biggs, and vocalist Jake Dieffenbach, Rivers of Nihil quickly made a name for themselves in the death metal scene, attracting the attention of legendary DM titan Erik Rutan. Rutan, revered for his work as both a musician (Hate Eternal, Morbid Angel) and producer (Cannibal Corpse, Goatwhore), insisted on recording The Conscious Seed of Light. The results were, unsurprisingly, spectacular, with Heavy Blog Is Heavy going so far as to assert that the debut "rivals even the most legendary work of some of [Rivers of Nihil's] peers and influences." They continued along this trajectory with Monarchy, which Metal Injection praised as an "incredibly striking" demonstration of how "Rivers of Nihil have evolved into a monster." Brody came on the podcast to talk about the writing and recording process of their new album "Where Owls Know My Name" Brody also talks to us about his heavy metal beginning, how some of their songs ended up in the Joe Lynch film "Mayhem" and what Brody's "Dream band" with members alive or dead would be.

Welcome to this weeks episode of The Heavy Metal History Podcast. My guest this week is multi instrumentalist Matthias Sollak of the band Harakiri for the Sky. Harakiri for the Sky is an Austrian band formed in Salzburg and Vienna in 2011 by vocalist JJ (Michael V. Wahntraum) and multi-instrumentalist Matthias Sollak, formerly of black metal band Bifröst. They have released three studio albums – Harakiri for the Sky (2012), Aokigahara (2014) and III: Trauma (2016) – via German record label Art of Propaganda. Their fourth album Arson will be released on February 2018 also through Art of Propaganda. Matthias came on the podcast to discuss the writing and recording of Arson as well as his early heavy metal influences and how working by himself writing all the music has given him the most creative freedom.

October of 1987. A month that saw a monumental release from a band from Brazil, the legendary Sepultura, a band that defied geographical odds to get recognized in an American dominated genre up to this point. Exodus falls in line with other legendary Bay Area thrash bands and released “Pleasures of the Flesh” an album and band that often gets overlooked in conversation about “big” thrash bands. Finally a band that would have members who would all be legendary in their own right with a little help from Dave Mustaine, Sanctuary would prove to be the catalyst for the likes of Warrel Dane and Jeff Loomis.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

September 1987 which was a jam packed month full of metal releases, but the question is was it quantity over quality or the other way around? We examine and discuss 6 albums this week and most of the albums released during this time fall in the more “generic” category unfortunately. Savatage, Grim Reaper and Armored Saint all put out albums that could genuinely be somewhat interchangeable in most respects. They arent ground breaking even by 1987 standards and it leaves the listener wondering if these bands were that game changing back then or if most people didnt care that much for them. Motorhead releases and album that could also be put under that same speculation, but its fucking Motorhead so they get a pass regardless. We see the pre-birth of what would eventually lead to the creation of Type O Negative with Pete Steeles Hardcore/Punk/Thrash hybrid album “Retaliation” with his band Carnivore. September was a weird month and while these are only our opinions it seems not many of these records have stood the test of time, but the bands themselves have, which speaks volumes.

On this weeks episode we go back to June of 1987 (We skipped June somehow) In June we see a crossover band make waves with their 2nd album, and album that took almost 4 years to get out and they even alienated quite a bit of their original fanbase with just this releases. Whether thats because their listeners weren’t ready for musical growth or the album was just bad is for you to decide. Out of the ashes of Black Flag Henry Rollins forges the Rollins Band and releases a blistering Metallic Hardcore album for our ears once again by will of his insane work ethic changing the face of music with this release. The Swiss band Celtic Frost opens up their 3rd album in one of the strangest ways imaginable by having a cover song as the 1st track on the album. And its not a good cover song either, we dont know the reasoning behind WHY they chose to do this, but if I ever have the chance to talk to Tom G. Warrior, you can bet I will find out why.

#22 Metallica's St. Anger Jul 24, 2017

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. This week Dustin and Matt decide to change things up and discuss on album specifically, an album that is controversial and maligned for many a Metallica fan, the album of St. Anger. The band took a long time and a lot of money to write and record this record all while embroiled with James going to rehab, filming a documentary while writing it and finding a new bass player in Robert Trujillo. While Load and Re-Load started to turn away a lot of Metallica fans, it seems St. Anger is what really turned a lot of us off to the band and left most of the fan base extremely polarized in their opinion of Metallica after this album was released. Along with this episode, next episode Matt and I are going to watch the documentary “Some Kind of Monster” that went along with the making of this album and "live" commentary it.

#14 May 1987 Pt.1 Apr 26, 2017

Welcome to this weeks episode of The Heavy Metal History Podcast.

May of 1987 saw such a plethora of legendary releases that we had to split this episode into two parts in order to cover everything properly. We talk about Anvil, a band that was largely forgotten and mostly considered a “generic” band up until the release of their 2008 documentary “Anvil: The Story of Anvil” saw the band receive a 2nd wind in their career, but nearly 20 years prior to that documentary the band put out their 4th album “Strength of Steel”, their only charting album in their entire discography. Helloween released their 2nd album which begins a 2 part concept album and even showcases the beginnings of what would become Power Metal. And the almighty birth of Death Metal with Chuck Shuldiner’s band Death putting out an album that would be far ahead of its time with “Scream Bloody Gore”, the album epitomized everything that would become so prevalent in the formation of the Death Metal genre, which even the bands name rooted in the genre itself.

Welcome to this weeks episode of The Heavy Metal History Podcast.

We move ahead to April in 1987. in which we see the explosion of Bay Area Thrash with Testament and Death Angel, both bands releasing their first records, but with a massive difference in their ages. The Members of Death Angel at the time of the release of their album were all still under 20 years of age and had been writing since they were teenagers and the ferocity that they unleashed into the world with their album “The Ultra Violence” still holds up even 30 years later with its technical proficiency and relentless speed. From the frigid north in Canada, Voivod put out their 3rd record where they finally begin to reign in and refine their unique brand of chaos driven music. And also hailing from the Bay Area, Faith No More Introduce themselves (yes, pun intended) to the world with their unique brand of rap infused, skate punk heavy metal, on what many consider to be their true first album “Introduce Yourself”. Lead singer Chuck Mosley never gets as much credit as Mike Patton does, but his vocal delivery along with the songs put out on this record are easily some of the bands best from possibly the most overlooked record in their discography.

And the band Pentagram furthers the “Doom Metal” sound pioneered by Black Sabbath on their release “Day of Reckoning”.

This year on the podcast we decided to change things up with the content and move far ahead to albums celebrating 30, 20 and 10 year anniversaries respectively.

So with that, we move ahead to February 1987 (No metal releases in January of 1987 somehow).

Our Guest this week was Matt Solis who plays in the band Cormorant and writer for Decibel magazine. We discussed 3 albums and did a VERY special dramatic reading of King Diamond's "Abigail" record, spooky ambient music included! Even for the beginning of 1987 the releases that were put out are already a sign of the evolution of the genre in a very short amount of time, the speed, ferocity and technicality in which a lot of these albums were written is a good indicator of where the genre would end up in present day.

I once again cover a few punk rock records to show its importance of crossover within the metal genre. We see Black Flag’s first EP that was marred with line-up changes which the band would deal with for years to come and Dead Kennedy’s thrust the Bay Area punk scene into the world with the release of their biggest and most well known album that would prove to be quite as outspoken as their leading man Jello Biafra. Saxon keeps their output going with their 2nd release of 1980. Finally we close out with the once leading man of Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osborne, crossover to even more success with is solo career and unleashing Randy Rhodes into the world with “Blizzard of Ozz”

Welcome to this weeks episode of the Heavy Metal History Podcast.

This week we move ahead to May through July of 1980. In this 3 month span of history we see the rise of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene completely dominate everything in its path, with bands like Saxon, Accept, Krokus and Samson putting out albums. Samson is the band that introduced the world to Bruce Dickinson who would eventually become the lead singer for Iron Maiden. In Australia, AC/DC rises like a phoenix from the ashes after the loss of Bon Scott and puts out one of the highest selling records of all time with “Back in Black” while not an out right metal album, its place in the genre has some merit and thats why I felt it should be mentioned in this episode.

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History.

We move into April of 1980 to discuss the rise of the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) scene with two of the most now well known bands putting out records in the same month on the same day. The timing of those two records couldn’t have been at a better time as the souring and dueling leads of both those band would begin to change and shape the sound of bands to come for years. While Iron Maiden was releasing their maiden (pun intended) record, the flip side of that is that Judas Priest was on their 6th album by this time and had already been a band for almost 6 years. And yet the two bands are synonymous with each other as are the release of these records respectively. I touch on the Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath album that was ALSO released in the same month, but I have already covered the making of that album in our part 2 episode of Black Sabbath. The Los Angeles based punk rock band X also puts out one of the genres most well known and memorable records during this time.

#3 January-March 1980 Jan 16, 2017

Welcome to this weeks episode of The Heavy Metal History Podcast we move ahead in the wake of Black Sabbath to January through March of 1980.

The early days of metal, especially in 1980, the album releases weren’t as extensive as the later years would become. And the inclusion of punk rock and some of those early bands and releases are an equally imperative piece of the genre to talk about as it would later go on to fuse with metal and form Hardcore.

With Punk rock coming to the forefront almost 5 years earlier, 1980 would see some of the most iconic and well known albums from the genre to be released. The Clash would go on to have massive success with “London Calling” and later in the year with “Sandanista” due to a late release date in the U.S. Between the months of January and March we also see the beginnings of the Blackened Thrash genre with Witchfynde who would also release 2 albums in the same year. The Ramones put out their most successful and highest selling album of their discography. German band Scorpions continue along their already broad path or Rock/Metal with Animal Magnetism and Van Halen continues to storm the scene with their 3rd album, that album has a song that possibly later inspired and heavily influenced Slayer’s “Seasons in the Abyss”

#2 Black Sabbath Pt. 2 (1975-1980) Jan 09, 2017

Welcome to this weeks episode of Heavy Metal History. This week we pick up where we left off in the history of the progenitors of the genre.
We go through the years 1976-1980 of Black Sabbath’s storied career discussing the drug fueled creations of Black Sabbath during a completely toxic and almost un inspired part of their career. A time that was mired by excessive drug use, lawsuits, divorce and a growing disolvement between original members of the band. This was during “Technical Ecstasy” and Never Say Die”.

These albums are a fascinating tale of excess and the inevitable toll it takes on creativity. And we finish of the bands history with a massive shake up in its original long lasting line-up that lead to a resurgence and one of the best albums of their career with addition of the legendary Ronnie James Dio taking over lead vocal duties after the departure of Ozzy Osborne.

#1 Black Sabbath Pt. 1 (1970-1975) Dec 28, 2016

Welcome to the first episode of the Heavy Metal History Podcast!

In our first episode we talk about the band that started it all, Black Sabbath! We go in depth of the bands start of their career between the years 1970-1975, their recording process for each album as well as interesting and little known facts about the band.

While maybe not the exact beginnings of Heavy Metal, Black Sabbath truly pushed the sonic boundaries of sound and shaped the way the genre would evolve and grow.
