Finding Authenticity at Home ft. Jason Dunnigan
Mar 17, 2021
Finding the courage to be yourself is a lesson everyone hopes their kids learn. But it’s not always easy. That’s part of why this episode’s guest is so refreshing. Jason Dunnigan is a dad to four kids who defies all the conventional “rules” of fatherhood. He does his daughters’ hair, he helps his kids shop for clothes, and he’s a committed fan of reality TV. In this episode, Jason is sharing his secret formula for authenticity that’s earned him quite a following on social media.
Jason started sharing his fatherhood journey on social media as a way to encourage other dads to step outside the box. He grew up with lots of girl cousins who taught him how to braid their hair, and Jason has continued that tradition with his own daughters, doing their hair as often as possible.
But his unique brand of fatherhood isn’t just braids and ponytails. Jason wants his kids to remember him as an active participant in their lives, and the kind of dad who supported them, no matter their desires.
Recently, Jason and his wife, Emily, have stepped into the DIY sphere. During the COVID-19 pandemic they updated their kitchen by painting the cabinets and replacing hardware, before completely gutting and renovating a bathroom. Now they’re working on finishing two rooms in the basement.
Jason hopes other people will see his brand of authenticity and find the courage to express themselves as well. He loves meeting followers out in the “wild”, so if you run into him in the Salt Lake City area, don’t be afraid to say hi.

Finding Inspiration in the World Around Us ft. Stephen Orr
Jan 06, 2021
There are people you meet in your life who find the positive in every situation. The guest on this episode of Heart of the Home Podcast is one of them. Stephen Orr is Editor-in-Chief of Better Homes and Gardens magazine. As the head of one of America’s most storied brands, he finds himself in the unique position of preserving tradition while also forging ahead with new concepts and ideas. Stephen grew up in small town America, eventually leaving home to chase his dreams in New York City. Now he finds himself bridging the gap between the city and BH&G headquarters in Iowa. Here at Stagg Design, we’re big believers in evolution and growth. We had bold dreams when we started this design firm, and it’s exciting to look back and see how far we’ve come. But our success has come with plenty of changing and adapting along the way. The same is true here on Heart of the Home Podcast. That’s why we’re temporarily hitting the “pause” button while our team works to re-invent what this podcast means. We still want to bring you inspiration for your own projects and answer your DIY questions, but we also want to focus more on telling the stories of home. We want to talk to more people, and learn how they interact with the spaces around them. Most of you know I have a background in journalism, and connecting with people and telling their stories is a passion that will never go away. There are nearly 8 billion people in this world, and they all have something to share. I’m looking forward to being a small part of giving them that voice. Stagg Design Shop Vintage Art Collection ft. Melissa and Katie
Sep 16, 2020
We’re big believers that when everything in a home is brand new, the whole space can feel cold and sterile. That’s why our team loves incorporating family heirlooms and vintage pieces into our designs. Helping you easily create that soulful feeling in your home is also one of the biggest reasons we developed the Vintage Artwork Collection on Stagg Design Shop. On this episode of Heart of the Home Podcast, Jen is joined by our resident stylist and our art director to discuss the collection and why your home could benefit from a piece of it.
We LOVE hearing from our listeners, readers and followers. Lots of times, you reach out with your own design/DIY dilemmas. In this episode, we’re addressing some of your questions. We’re looking at when it’s worth restoring vintage furniture, how you can channel your kids’ creativity when designing their own rooms, and how to bring that boring oak banister into the 2020s with style!
Behind the Design: Project Fit Fam ft. Meg, Melissa and Kelton
Sep 02, 2020

Pandemic Home Projects Update ft. Jon

Today, Jen and Jon are sharing their progress, plus discussing what they’re hoping for as their kids get ready to go back to school.
Behind the Design: Project Valley Views ft. Meg and Melissa
Aug 19, 2020
Anyone who has ever built a new home knows how exciting it can be choosing all the finishes. When you’re working with a custom home builder, you often have the freedom to use any kind of materials you want. However when you work with a semi-custom home builder, your options are much more limited. But that doesn’t mean you have to settle. Our clients navigated this type of situation when building #ProjectValleyViews. In this episode, our design team is discussing how we helped our clients still get the home of their dreams even if there were some limitations.
Homeschooling, Homesteading, and Finding Joy Every Day ft. Jennifer Borget
Aug 12, 2020
The COVID-19 Pandemic has forced all of us to adapt our lives. For many parents with children, that includes more schoolwork happening at home. Jennifer Borget is a mom of 3 who never expected to be a “home school mom”, but she found herself on that path several years ago. She’s joining Jen on Heart of the Home podcast to share some of her best tips for learning at home. They’re also talking about gardening, homesteading, and Jennifer’s unique perspective as a black woman and the wife of a white police officer.
As a black woman, the mom of biracial children, and the wife of a white police officer, Jennifer has interesting perspectives on the tensions surrounding race and police brutality in our country right now. She recently shared this post about the organizations working to uplift black lives and help bridge the gap between police and the communities they serve.
Revisiting Organizing Your Home ft. Sam Pregenzer
Aug 05, 2020

That’s where professional organizers like Sam Pregenzer come in. In the early days of Heart of the Home Podcast, we talked with her about ways to get all our homes in order. Today, we’re revisiting that conversation, because it’s a reminder we can all use.
Behind the Design: Project Desert Escape ft. Meg and Melissa
Jul 29, 2020
If it feels like we’ve been talking about #projectdesertescape for a long time, it’s because we have. But at 7,000 square feet, it’s one of the largest projects our firm has ever done, and there are lots of amazing spaces to share with everyone! In this episode of Heart of the Home Podcast, Jen is talking with two of our designers about what went into designing this home, and the unique challenges they faced working on a remote project.
Show Notes
Before we started on this project, the home had some interesting wallpaper choices. One of the powder rooms had a print that Jen describes as “being in the belly of a snake”. A guest bedroom featured wallpaper that looked 3D and would make you feel dizzy if you looked at it too long. (And don’t even get us started on those bubble lights on the wall…)
The house also featured lots of lighting that was obviously high-end, but didn’t necessarily match the style of the home or the direction our clients wanted to go.
We are absolutely thrilled with the way each of the spaces turned out. And trust us, there were lots, because this is a BIG home. (7,000 square feet to be exact.) You can find more details and images about the project here. But we’ll also share some of our favorite spots below, because we don’t want to keep you waiting!
Revisiting Adapting Your Home to Fit Your Family ft. Oakley Peterson
Jul 22, 2020
One of our first episodes on Heart of the Home Podcast featured one of our favorite people on the planet, Oakley Peterson. She’s the woman behind the popular Instagram account ‘Nothing Down About It‘. In the interview, she shared about being the mom of a son with Down Syndrome. In this episode, we’re re-visiting that conversation with Oakley. It’s all about creating an environment at home that allows children of all abilities to thrive.
The Home Behind the Infamous Instagram Haircut ft. Abi Ayres
Jul 15, 2020
Would you ever be able to rent your home to complete strangers while you’re still living there? And then keep doing it with different groups of strangers? That’s just one of the things about Abi Ayres that is so interesting. You may know her as the woman who got a really bad haircut on Instagram, but when you dig deep, she is so much more than that one viral moment. Abi is our guest on this episode of Heart of the Home Podcast. She and Jen are discussing home, family, and how she believes we should all get to know ourselves.
Show Notes
Abi is truly one of our favorite people to follow on social media. She shares real-life struggles in an honest and hilarious way that has us laughing more often than not. But she’s also not afraid to share the raw, personal stuff that makes us all human.
Abi and her husband Ammon are parents to three adorable little ones. They have recently embarked on a journey Abi refers to as “Homesteading Like a Gangster”. Their family is growing all sorts of vegetables in the backyard, learning to can and preserve that produce, baking sourdough bread, brewing homemade kombucha, and even raising chickens!
Their current home is the third flip Abi and Ammon have gutted and remodeled themselves. The first one was a house in Michigan that Abi says was full of some pretty disgusting stuff. (We’ll spare you the visuals of the worst, but just know rat traps with decaying rats, and peanut butter that expired in the ’70s are on the list.)
They finished this first project in the middle of the Great Recession, while living thousands of miles away from family. We say that’s the definition of a DIY warrior! But the results were worth it. Check out these after images.
After moving back to Utah, the Ayres family repeated the process with two more homes. The first time in West Valley City.
Where the results were just as impressive as you’d expect.
And a third time in Millcreek. I mean, check out that wood paneling!
We will never get sick of a good before-and-after. Abi’s Millcreek home is the perfect example of a satisfying transformation.
You can connect with Abi Ayres on Instagram @abiayres or by visiting her website.

In this episode Jen is checking in with Kelton for a status update, and sharing some advice about managing your own expectations.

Jun 17, 2020

Now she’s on a crusade to empower other women to pick up those power tools and finish projects all on their own! On this episode, she and Jen are talking about the best ways to make bold color choices in your home, and how to get started on your DIY journey if you don’t have much experience.
The Importance of Elevating Black Voices ft. Shavonda Gardner
Jun 10, 2020
We’ve been trying a lot harder to listen this week. In the wake of the death of George Floyd and protests against police brutality sweeping across the country, we have felt the weight of knowing we need to do something more. The call for change is louder than ever. We hear it, and we want to do what we can to amplify it. That’s why we’re inviting back one of our favorite guests from a past episode. Shavonda Gardner is an extremely talented interior designer. She’s also a black woman in a predominantly white space. In this episode, we’re handing the microphone over to her. She’s sharing an important message, one we think we all need to hear.
Renovating a Home During a Pandemic ft. Kelton
May 27, 2020
If you’ve ever renovated a home, you know problems always come up. (And they’re never ones you were anticipating.) But when our podcast producer bought a fixer-upper earlier this year, he never could have imagined a global pandemic would interfere with his remodeling schedule. This project has been full of surprises. Some good. (Like finding designer-grade supplies on a budget). And some bad. (Overpowering animal odors anyone?) On this episode, Jen is chatting with Kelton Wells about how he prioritized spaces in this renovation, and the biggest hurdle in transforming this house into his ideal home.
Designing a Kitchen Full of Memories ft. Maria Lichty
May 20, 2020
You’ve heard us say it before (and we’ll probably say it again), good homes help you easily create memories. That’s exactly what happens in the kitchen of Maria Lichty. She’s the brains behind the popular Instagram account, blog, and cookbook “Two Peas and Their Pod”. Her recipes are delectable showstoppers while still being approachable – much like Maria herself. She believes everyone can cook, and she’s on a journey to help everyone connect with their inner chef. In this episode, she and Jen are discussing the ways your kitchen can become the most important place in your home.
She started blogging shortly after marrying her husband, Josh, when people started asking for the recipes she served at her wedding. (She prepared all the food herself, by the way.)
Along the way she has amassed quite the following, and it’s no surprise why. I mean, just look at all these amazing treats she has cooked up!
These days her two favorite kitchen helpers are her sons, Caleb and Maxwell.
It is obvious the heart of Maria’s home is her kitchen. It is welcoming, open and organized… the perfect place to whip up a batch of your favorite treats!
But the most impressive part of her kitchen, is this wall of KitchenAid mixers. If this doesn’t bring you joy, we’re not sure what will.
Choosing Paint Colors for Outdoor Projects ft. Jon
May 13, 2020
If you’ve been following us for a while, you may have the feeling that the Stagg Reno backyard is a never-ending project. While we do keep finding things to build, it’s only because we have a clear vision of the yard’s full potential! Our latest project is one that many people have weighed in on over on Jen’s Instagram page. We asked for your input on what color to paint our new garden structure, and you sure had opinions! In this episode of Heart of the Home, Jen and Jon are discussing the status of this latest project, and sharing what color they finally chose. They’re also sharing some tips to help you pick the right color when finishing your own outdoor spaces.
Following Your Dreams and Building Memories at Home ft. Cali Carlin Sorensen
May 06, 2020
If you’ve ever worked with the Stagg Design team, you know we are planners! That’s one of the biggest lessons our guest this week hopes to share. Cali Carlin Sorensen is a veteran television journalist, mom of three, wife, and now successful entrepreneur. Throughout her life and career, she has always followed her gut, and that instinct has always landed her just where she’s supposed to be. In this episode, Jen and Cali are talking about following your dreams while still staying true to yourself, and Cali is also giving us a sneak peak into the beautiful home she and her husband are making their own in central California.

This is a space our team actually designed and installed toward the end of last summer, but because it was near the end of the season, we’ve been saving it to share with you until things started warming up again. In this episode, Jen is joined by two of our designers, Meg and Melissa. They’re talking about what inspired this spectacular outdoor space, and how you can use those same tips to create the front or backyard of your dreams.
Designing Spaces That Always Feel Like Home ft. Mary Conley
Apr 22, 2020
The team at Stagg Design firmly believes that every house deserves to feel like a home, and every person deserves that peaceful feeling that being in your favorite space can bring. Achieving that balance can be especially difficult if you have to move often and without much warning. That’s the reality today’s guest and her family are all too familiar with. Mary Conley is a blogger, influencer, mom of two (soon to be three!), and wife to NBA star Mike Conley. About a year ago, they all got the news that Mike was being traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Utah Jazz. That meant they didn’t have much time to pack up their home in Tennessee and find a new place to live in Salt Lake City. In this episode, Mary shares how she creates that feeling of home no matter where her family is staying, plus she’s dishing on what life is like when her husband has to spend so much time on the road.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned during all our years of doing DIY projects, it’s that there really is no shortage of things that can go wrong. The fence Jon installed in the backyard of the #StaggReno is a perfect example. From the word, “go”, we faced problem after problem. From contractors standing us up, to posts literally snapping in two, and even mislabeled cans of stain (yes, it was as bad as you’re thinking), this project faced a lot of setbacks. While this might sound like a tale of warning, there is a light at the end of this tunnel. The good news: we did finish, and we couldn’t be happier with the end result. In this episode, Jen and Jon are sharing a few laughs (it’s finally been long enough) over one of their most difficult projects yet.
With a variety of textures, colors and designs, nothing can turn a room into a statement quite like the right wallpaper. But the trouble is, some people stay away from the stuff because they have terrible memories of scraping, ripping, soaking, and scraping some more to remove paper from their parents’ or grandparents’ walls. Well, we are here to tell you, times are changing! Wallpaper is very different now than in decades-past, so in this episode, Jen is laying out her case for why your next room makeover should include paper on the walls, and maybe even the ceiling!
