377/ Beyond the List: The Geneology of Matthew 1:1-17 Sep 07, 2023
    Show notes

In today’s episode, Rachael focuses on the often-overlooked genealogy found in the beginning of Matthew. In a culture where lineage was synonymous with identity, Matthew's genealogy is a treasure trove of symbolism, revealing essential truths about Jesus' heritage and mission. In this episode, we learn how Matthew strategically crafts his genealogy as a bridge connecting the messianic promises to their fulfillment in Jesus. This was pivotal for the Jewish audience, signifying Jesus as the awaited Messiah who would restore Israel.

This episode encourages listeners to reconsider the significance of this genealogy, urging them not to miss the nuances that point to God's restoration plan. Just as God worked through broken lives in the past, He continues to use imperfect people for His perfect plan.

376// Good News for Everyone: An Introduction to the Gospel of Matthew Sep 06, 2023
    Show notes

The book of Matthew stands as a powerful introduction to the New Testament, revealing the heart of the gospel message – the good news about Jesus. As one of the original twelve apostles, Matthew presents a compelling narrative of Jesus' life, teachings, and transformative ministry.

Matthew's overarching goal is to affirm Jesus' kingship and authority, even in ways that challenge the expectations of his audience. He masterfully weaves a narrative that emphasizes Jesus' fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, serving as a guide for Jewish Christians to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. This purposeful approach resonates with the broader theme of fulfillment found throughout the gospel.

Whether you're a seasoned reader or new to the Scriptures, the Hearing Jesus podcast offers a valuable opportunity to deepen your understanding of Jesus' life, teachings, and enduring impact.

375// Exploring the Genre of a Gospel: An Introduction to the Gospels Series Sep 05, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode of the Hearing Jesus podcast, host Rachael Groll delves into the concept of the gospel and the reason for having four gospels in the Bible. The gospel is a genre of writing, specifically biographies about the life of Jesus, and it is found at the beginning of the New Testament. Rachael explains that the gospels were not necessarily written in chronological order, and each gospel writer had a unique perspective and audience in mind.

Rachael addresses common questions about reading the gospels, including the differences in sequence and wording among the accounts. She highlights the literary techniques used by ancient writers, such as rearranging sources for emphasis. The gospels were primarily meant to be heard, not read, as public readings spread the message to wider audiences.

As modern readers, Rachael encourages us to engage with the gospels by understanding the cultural context, considering the morals of the stories, and applying the teachings to our lives. She concludes with a prayer for listeners, inviting them to explore the treasure of God's word and seek a fresh understanding of the gospel message.

The Hearing Jesus podcast offers valuable insights into understanding the gospels and deepening one's connection with Jesus. Join Rachael as she leads listeners through an in-depth study of the gospels, providing rich context and practical applications for today's audience. Learn to approach the scriptures with fresh ears and an open heart, discovering the beauty and significance of the gospel message.

374// God Still Works During His Silence: Introduction to the Gospels Sep 04, 2023
    Show notes

Before we dive into the study of the New Testament, I wanted to spend a little time looking at what the scholars call the “inter-testamental” period or the “silent years.” These were the years between the Old Testament and the New Testament. One thing that we learn from this period of time is that just because God is silent, it doesn’t mean He isn’t working. Join me today as we take a look at what was actually happening during this period of time.

There is Never A Moment That God is Not With Us

It doesn’t matter how you feel, the truth is, God never leaves us alone. Scripture reveals that to us over and over, and the word of God is more powerful than what we feel. In this six-week study from the Book of John, Rachael Groll takes you on an in-depth exploration into the lives of six women Jesus knew. Women often deal with feelings of insecurity and unworthiness, yet the lives of these women show that Jesus values us, wants a relationship with us, and can use us to further His kingdom. In her warm, conversational style, Rachael ties together her life experience, knowledge of the Scriptures, and her compassion for women to encourage us and enable us to become the women God has called us to be.

Bible Study 101: Allow This Prayer to Change Your Life

Today I pray over you the same prayer a missionary prayed over me years ago- and it changed my life! I pray it blesses you.

The Hearing Jesus Podcast will encourage and equip you to step into the calling God has for your life, living out your faith in the everyday. Together we will break down walls that keep us from growing spiritually. We will dig deep into our Bibles to understand and connect the Scriptures to our lives. We will boldly obey what God calls us to do, walking through doors that only He can open.

Hey friends, welcome to the Hearing Jesus Podcast.

Do you sometimes doubt if you are truly hearing God’s voice or if it’s really your own? Do you wonder how you can know the difference? Do you struggle to feel confident in your relationship with God and what He says in his word? Do you sometimes feel stagnant or like you hit a wall in your spiritual life?

Hey, I’m your host, Rachael Groll: missionary, author, pastor, and life coach. And I have been there. I, too, was doubting God’s voice in my own life. I, too, felt insecure about the things I thought God might be calling me to do. I wanted to make a difference in the world and be obedient to what God was calling me to do, but I wasn’t quite sure how to figure out what exactly that was. I kept telling myself that I was wasting time trying to figure it out or waiting for Him to show me. Or that I wasn’t qualified to do the things I thought He might be telling me to do.

The answer for me was found in the pages of the Bible, as I learned how to understand what it was actually saying. If you are ready to grow in your faith and to step confidently into the calling God has for you, then join me as we dig deep into God’s word so you can learn to live out your faith in your everyday life.

Friend, you are loved, you are cherished, and you are His.
