Hawkeye History Podcast: Jeff Horner Jul 03, 2019
    Show notes
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The door was left open a crack during the late 1990s. Iowa State was looking to slip through it.
The Hawkeyes’ future was unknown at the time. Dr. Tom Davis’ contract had not renewed and a new coach had not been hired.
Cyclone coach Larry Eustachy used the opportunity to court Mason City point guard Jeff Horner, despite him growing up an avid Iowa fan. The basketball phenom really liked what he saw and heard on an unofficial visit to Ames.
What would have become a nightmare for Iowa having already lost in-state stars Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison to Kansas turned fond memories. Steve Alford replaced Davis and corralled Horner shortly after his arrival in Iowa City.
Horner went on to lead the Hawkeyes to two NCAA Tournaments and a Big Ten Tournament title. He’s their all-time assists leader (612) and is second in three-pointers made (262).
We caught up with Horner recently for the Hawkeye History podcast, on which he told stories about being recruited by ISU, playing for Alford, living through the Pierre Pierce arrests, studying Pornography at Iowa (what?) and much more.
Please give it a listen. You won’t be disappointed.

Hawkeye History Podcast: Acie Earl Jun 27, 2019
    Show notes
IOWA CITY, Iowa – If you drove the lane against Iowa in the early 1990s, you dealt with Acie Earl. And often times, he sent your shot right back to you free of charge.
The shot-blocker from Moline (IL) High won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors as a junior and still holds the school record for career blocked shots (365). He was more than a one trick pony, however.
His 1,779 points rank third all-time on the school leader board behind only Roy Marble and Aaron White. His 811 rebounds put him seventh in Hawkeye history.
The Boston Celtics drafted Earl in the first round and 19th overall in the 1993 NBA Draft. He and Ricky Davis, who went 21st in ’98, were the only Iowa first-round picks since ’90.
We caught up with Earl for our latest Hawkeye History podcast, during which he talked about what he’s doing these days and his time at Iowa, including playing for Dr. Tom Davis and his friendship with the late Chris Street.

Hawkeye History Podcast: James Vandenberg Jun 14, 2019
    Show notes
IOWA CITY, Iowa – James Vandenberg became the next man in on an extreme level. He established himself as the prime example of that Iowa football mantra.
For the first nine games of the 2009 season, the redshirt freshman quarterback helped prepare starter Ricky Stanzi for action. When the latter went down with a leg injury in Week 10 against Northwestern, Vandenberg was called to duty.
The Hawkeyes were unbeaten and ranked in the Top 10 at the time. They were challenging for a Big Ten Championship.
With Stanzi sidelined the following week at Ohio State, Vandenberg started for the first time in his college career in The Shoe. He helped the Hawkeyes put up a strong fight before they fell in overtime.
Vandenberg went on to start two seasons after Stanzi’s graduation. He experienced the highs and lows of being the Iowa quarterback. He played served as the No. 1 for one season under offensive coordinator Ken O’Keefe and the other under Greg Davis. It turned out to be a tough transition.
We caught up with Vandenberg for our latest Hawkeye History Podcast, in which he talks about the coaching change, stepping in for Stanzi as a freshman and what he learned from all of his college experiences.

I caught up with Holloway for our latest Hawkeye History podcast. He shared some great stories, including breaking down his famous play, some regrets he has some his time at Iowa, a funny Kirk Ferentz memory and more.
