    About Harvey's guests:

Today’s guest, Billy Stritch, is a renowned composer, arranger, vocalist, and pianist extraordinaire who is both a highly sought-after music director and a star performer in his own right.

For 25 years he worked closely with Liza Minnelli as her music director, collaborator and accompanist. He’s also been the music director and arranger for many other great stars including Tony Bennett, Marilyn Maye, Linda Lavin, Linda Eder, Ann Hampton Callaway, and Christine Ebersole.

As a solo entertainer, he performs sell-out shows in concert halls and nightclubs across the country, including his highly acclaimed tribute shows to Mel Tormé and Cy Coleman, as well as his spectacular show with Jim Caruso called “The Sinatra Century”. During the pandemic, he was one of the first artists to start performing online, creating his own weekly live-stream show called “Billy’s Place”, celebrating the Great American Songbook with songs and stories from his amazing career.

He’s recorded numerous albums, and some of my favourites are “Jazz Live”, “Waters of March”, “Billy Stritch Sings Mel Tormé”, “The Sunday Set: Recorded Live at Birdland”, “Christmas at Birdland”, and “Billy’s Place”, which is a collection of his favorite songs from those online shows I just mentioned. He’s also been prominently featured on at least a dozen other albums by music artists like Christine Ebersole, Jim Caruso, Benny Carter, Klea Blackhurst, and many more. And if all that weren’t enough, our guest is also a Broadway star.

And when he’s not on tour, he can often be found dazzling New York audiences on Sunday nights at Bemelman’s Bar at the Carlyle, and of course, every Monday night at Birdland, for Jim Caruso’s Cast Party.

    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Harriet Schock & Gary Lynn Floyd about the Music of Harriet Schock

    About Harvey's guests:

Today we’re celebrating the music of one of America’s greatest and most iconic songwriters, Harriet Schock.

She’s written many hit songs including “Hollywood Town”, “First Time on a Ferris Wheel”, “You Are”, “Rosebud”, “Worn Around the Edges”, “It Tears at Me”, and of course, the multi-platinum selling, Grammy-nominated “Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady”, recorded by Helen Reddy.

Most recently, Harriet wrote and recorded the poignant and emotionally powerful coming out anthem “I am Yours”, which I’m very proud to say, was inspired by my story and my struggle to gain parental acceptance after telling my parents that I was gay when I was 19.

Harriet is here, making her 3rd appearance on our show, to discuss her highly anticipated, magnificent new album entitled “Paintings”, and she will be singing the title track from the album during this interview. The album has been released to coincide with an upcoming new documentary film about her, entitled “Hollywood Town: The Harriet Schock Story”.

And joining Harriet, making his 2nd appearance on our show, is a highly popular singer-songwriter whose heartfelt recording of “I am Yours”, which he performed the last time he was on our show, led to the making of a beautiful new album of some of Harriet Schock’s most beloved and enduring songs, entitled, “Present Schock: The Songs of Harriet Schock”. One of the hit songs from this album is a newly reimagined rendition of “Ain’t No Way to Treat a Lady”, sung from the male perspective, and Gary will be performing the song for us on today’s show.

And his brand new album, “Look Out”, marks his vocal debut. The album, recorded in New Orleans with jazz heavyweights Herlin Riley on drums and Amina Scott on bass, includes a great mix of jazz standards like “This Can’t be Love”, reinvented pop classics like “Moon River”, “Time in a Bottle”, and “Every Breath You Take”, and theme songs from his youth including “Rainbow Connection”, the “Spiderman” theme and even a song from MASH.

Prior to the pandemic, our guest had a very successful career as a pianist and music director. He spent a decade as music director for the world renowned Second City theatre company, entertaining audiences around the globe. He’s worked with Martin Short, Dan Ackroyd, Deborah Cox, and many others, and his music has been heard internationally on radio, in film, and on television. Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with “The Seekers” Founding Member, Keith Potger

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Keith Potger, is part of pop music royalty. He was a founding member of one of the most popular and beloved vocal groups in music history: The Seekers.

With their signature fusion of folk and pop, their addictive instrumentations and perfect harmonies, and the amazing lead voice of Judith Durham, The Seekers were the first Australian music group to achieve global superstardom, selling well over 50 million records worldwide, and giving us such unforgettable songs as "I'll Never Find Another You", "A World of Our Own", "Morningtown Ride", “The Carnival is Over”, "Someday, One Day", "Georgy Girl", “When Will the Good Apples Fall”, and my personal favourite, “Walk With Me”, and so many more.

After The Seekers disbanded in 1968, our guest founded The New Seekers, who achieved worldwide success in the early 70s with hits including “Never Ending Song of Love”, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing", "You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me", “Look What They’ve Done to my Song, Ma”, and "Beg, Steal or Borrow". In 1992, The Seekers reunited for their Silver Jubilee, and they toured internationally for many years, and recorded 2 platinum-selling albums: “Future Road” and “Morningtown Ride to Christmas”.

And in 2019, our guest, along with original members Athol Guy and Bruce Woodley, and with the addition of longtime producer, guitarist and singer Michael Cristiano, released an album as “The Original Seekers”, entitled “Back to our Roots”. There’s also a wonderful live concert DVD entitled, “The Seekers Golden Jubilee Farewell Tour”. And most recently, a 3-CD compilation was released to mark the group’s 60th anniversary, featuring the group’s very last recording, “Carry Me”.

Our guest, as a member of The Seekers, has a prestigious, prominent and permanent place in music history. The Seekers were honoured as Australians of The Year in 1967, the only group to have been given this acknowledgement. They’ve been inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame, and the Music Victoria Hall of Fame, and in 1995 they were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia.

In 2012, the Seekers were honoured by the Australian Post Office with their own postage stamp. In 2013, The Seekers received the Ted Albert Award from the Australian Performing Rights Association for Outstanding Services to Australian Music.

And in 2014, our guest, along with his fellow group members, was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. But quite apart from all of that, our guest has had a highly successful career as a songwriter, record producer and solo performer. He’s released 3 solo albums: “Secrets of The Heart”, “Sunday” and “Smile Now”. And he continues to perform in concert to sold out, wildly enthusiastic audiences.
