Harvey Brownstone Interviews Lance Bernard Bryant of the Legendary Singing Group "The Platters" Oct 09, 2024
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Lance Bernard Bryant of the Legendary Singing Group "The Platters"

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Lance Bernard Bryant, is a current member of one of the greatest, most popular and beloved legendary music groups in history: The Platters.

Founded in 1952 by bass singer Herb Reed, The Platters brought us 40 hit singles, including the classic songs, “Only You”, “The Great Pretender”, “My Prayer”, “Twilight Time”, “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, “Harbor Lights”, “Enchanted”, “Winner Take All”, “The Magic Touch”, and many more. The Platters was the first Black group to reach international superstardom, with over 80 million records sold worldwide.

They’ve been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. And their classic hit songs “Only You” and “The Great Pretender” have been included in the Grammy Museum list of the greatest songs of the 20th century. They were the only act to have 3 songs included on the “American Graffiti” soundtrack, which is widely credited with igniting an oldies revival throughout the world in the mid-1970s.

And the global love affair with the music of The Platters just keeps growing. In fact, their music is so phenomenally popular, that on Spotify ALONE, their songs are streamed more than 3 million times every month. And despite a tumultuous history spanning decades of racism, unscrupulous identity theft and legal battles, and despite the passing of all the original members, the Platters as a group has endured and evolved and thrived over 7 decades, thanks to Herb Reed’s successor, Fred Balboni Jr., who has worked tirelessly to preserve and honour the legacy of this monumentally important group, which continues to bring their magnificent timeless music to concert halls throughout the world.

They are currently on a North American tour. And our guest is Lance Bernard Bryant, one of the 4 current members of The Platters, who’s taken time out of his very busy touring schedule to speak with me today.

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Sam Irvin, is a multi-award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter, author and educator whose love of horror movies as a child made him determined to meet and get to know the people who made those movies.

As a young teenager he produced a hugely popular fan magazine called “Bizarre”, dedicated to celebrating and promoting horror movies and the people who made them. Through a combination of ingenuity, tenacity, luck, and sheer force of will, he was able to meet, interview and sometimes befriend dozens of legendary stars including Vincent Price, Ingrid Pitt, Peter Cushing, Jane Seymour, Christopher Lee, Diana Rigg, Robert Morley, Michael York, and many others. And get this – by the time he was 13, he had already met a whole slew of big stars – everyone from George Burns, Jane Russell and Natalie Wood, to Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Robert DeNiro.

The fascinating journey of his remarkable youth as a self-proclaimed “professional groupie”, is the subject of his memoir entitled, “I Was a Teenage Monster Hunter: How I Met Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and More.” The book is a must-have for horror movie fans, because it contains the full text of his fabulous interviews with members of horror movie royalty at the pinnacle of their popularity.

Our guest began his filmmaking career as an assistant to legendary director Brian DePalma, working on the classic movies “The Fury” and “Dressed to Kill”. Since then, he has directed over 50 films including “Elvira’s Haunted Hills”, “Guilty as Charged”, “Oblivion”, “Out There”, “Acting on Impulse”, “Backlash: Oblivion 2”, “Magic Island”, “Fatal Acquittal”, and “Kiss of a Stranger”, which he also wrote. For television, he’s directed “Strip Mall”, “From Here on OUT”, “My Sister is so Gay”, and “Dante’s Cove”. He also co-produced the Academy Award winning movie, “Gods and Monsters”, as well as “The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy”, and the brilliant “Home Movies”, directed by Brian DePalma.

And if all of that weren’t enough, he wrote the acclaimed biography “Kay Thompson: From Funny Face to Eloise”, which led to being a consultant on Liza Minnelli’s Tony Award winning Broadway show, “Liza’s At the Palace”.

He’s also written 3 other books: “The Epic Saga Behind FRANKENSTEIN: THE TRUE STORY”, which provides a fascinating account of the making of the groundbreaking 1973 TV movie; he’s written a novel entitled, “ORBGASM: An Erotic Pulp Sci-Fi Satyricon”; and he wrote a hilarious children’s book called “Sam's Toilet Paper Caper!” He has also taught graduate courses on filmmaking at USC, and over the years he has won FOUR prestigious Rondo Awards.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Elizabeth Thomson, Author, Editor, “Bob Dylan: No Direction Home” Sep 23, 2024
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Elizabeth Thomson, Editor, “Bob Dylan: No Direction Home”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s show is all about an artist who is widely considered to be America’s greatest musical poet laureate and visionary, Bob Dylan.

He is an artist of transcendent historical importance, both as a cultural hero and an anti-hero. His songs have become part of our cultural DNA. In 1986, a groundbreaking book entitled “Bob Dylan: No Direction Home” was written by the renowned New York Times music critic, Robert Shelton, whose very first article about Bob Dylan brought him national attention and launched him as a celebrity. The book is uniquely insightful, because it’s much more than a biography. It’s an eyewitness account, because Mr. Shelton was a close friend of Bob Dylan’s, and he was there for all of the pivotal events in Dylan’s career in the first half of his life. This book comes as close as any book can, to finding the essence of the real Bob Dylan, and pierces through all the myths about this elusive artist. Mr. Shelton not only conducted an extensive and profound interview with Bob Dylan - he is the ONLY person EVER to have interviewed Dylan’s parents. Sadly, Mr. Shelton passed away in 1995, but in 2011, a much more complete version of the book was published, which included many parts that were left out of the original edition.

And now, a brand new edition is being released, thanks to our guest. She is a renowned journalist, broadcaster and author whose work has been featured in the most prestigious publications around the world. She’s a contributing editor to theartsdesk.com, she’s a contributor to The New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, she was a founding trustee of the Desmond Elliott Prize for first novels, she served as Editor of the business weekly, “Publishing News”, she was the founding Editor of “Book Brunch”, the online bulletin and website for the publishing industry, she has lectured at numerous universities, and as a broadcaster, she has interviewed everyone from Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, to Leonard Cohen, Judy Collins, Janis Ian, André Previn, Vanessa Redgrave and Joan Baez.

In fact, several years ago she wrote a highly compelling biography of Joan Baez entitled, “Joan Baez: The Last Leaf”. In 2018 she founded The Village Trip, a celebration of arts and activism in Greenwich Village and the East Village in Downtown Manhattan, and she currently serves as Joint Artistic Director of that event. But today, she’s hear to talk about the brand new edition of “Bob Dylan: No Direction Home”.
