Birding from the forest floor only gets you a small view of what's going on in the canopy. Forest towers are a great way to see more of the birdlife up and down the trees with hawks and swifts up in the sky, foraging flocks mid-canopy, and woodcreepers below the crown.

Costa Rica Country Roads Sep 19, 2024

Los Angeles Birding Spots: Chino Hills and El Dorado Jun 27, 2024

In advance of our repositioning cruise, we had a few days to bird around LA. We've been there a few times before to bird, so we were searching for new spots and new birds. That drew us to Chino Hills State Park which is a great place for wildflowers, hiking, and Black-chinned Sparrows. Before jumping on the cruise, we had some time to spend at El Dorado Regional Park.
*the name of the museum we were trying to recall is Arizona Sonora Desert Museum - thanks Taylor! Additionally, we mentioned multiple times an incorrect name for the trail we hiked at Chino Hills State Park. It is properly named the Coal Canyon Trail, not the Coal Creek Trail. We apologize for any confusion due to the mistake we did not catch before publishing the episode.

Cruising through the Caribbean Feb 22, 2024

A Day in South Florida Feb 08, 2024

Back in Florida - at least for a day! Before going on a "company retreat/family wedding" cruise, we had a day to bird the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area. Good food, sunny skies, and cherished birds! Luckily for us, there was a free walk with Tropical Audubon Society at Frog Pond WMA/Lucky Hammock, a great hotspot just outside of the Everglades National Park entrance.

Upper Texas Coast and (a little) Beaumont May 06, 2021

We went on their yearly sojourn to the Upper Texas Coast to compete in the Great Texas Birding Classic. This year we participated in the Human-Powered Competition and a new (to us) category, the Sunrise to Noon. Also, we spent some time visiting Cattail Marsh, an awesome wastewater treatment wetland in Beaumont!

SE Arizona and Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary Dec 17, 2020

Hannah and Erik escape the cold of Oregon for the warmer temperatures of Tucson, Arizona. First stop is the Ash Canyon Bird Sanctuary in Cochise County, Az and the famous feeders in Mary Jo Ballator's garden. After learning more about Mary Jo and the SABO, they head off in search of more southeast Arizona target species: Scaled Quail, Rufous-backed Robin, and Gilded Flicker at some incredible rural and urban birding sites.

Polar Owl, White Owl, Artic Owl...Snowy Owl Dec 03, 2020

Sewage Wetlands, an Urban Oasis Oct 08, 2020

In the Pacific Northwest, we often see a lot of shorebirds as vagrants in the fall. Hannah and Erik have spent the last few months working on a secret project with a handful of other young birders whose goals are to offer affordable travel experiences, benefit communities and non-profit partners, and build a supportive, inclusive community.

Alison Young, "The City Nature Challenge Communicator" Mar 25, 2020

The first-ever Citizen Science Day was held in 2016 and the citizen science teams at Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and California Academy of Sciences dreamed up a fun way to capitalize on their home cities’ friendly rivalry and hold a citizen science event around urban biodiversity. Green Jays, Gray Hawks, and more at the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival Nov 20, 2019

Another year, another Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival in the books! Hannah and Erik had an awesome time birding the RGV, seeing friends, and chasing birds. The festival field trips took them all over the valley from Falcon State Park to South Padre Island.

The RGV is such an incredibly special part of the United States, it’s the only place to see Green Jays, Great Kiskadees, Plain Chachalcas, and so much more. Listen in to find out what hotspots you shouldn’t miss (and where to eat) when you visit the RGV.

Cruisin', boozin', and birdin' on the Baltic Sea Oct 23, 2019

On the second leg of their Grand ScandinAVIAN Adventure, Hannah and Erik enjoy a leisurely cruise around the Baltic States and Scandinavia aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line Getaway. Backyard Birding and Wings Over Water Fest Mar 27, 2019

Hannah and Erik attended the Wings Over Water Northwest Birding Festival in Blaine, Washington. They rode a bus to Canada, bay cruise around Semiahmoo, and Hannah spoke on a panel! Greg Miller, the "Birding Philosopher" Jan 30, 2019

Hannah and Erik have an insightful and enjoyable talk with birding legend...Greg Miller! In 1998, Greg trekked the US to see how he could do in a Big Year and ended up competing against several other fantastic birders. Funnily enough, their quest was documented in the book and subsequently made into a fantastic movie, both titled The Big Year.
Greg is a wonderful guy and we really joyed talking to him about his adventures and his philosophies on life. Say "hi" the next time you see him birding!

Ecuador, Part 2! Dec 19, 2018

In this episode, Hannah and Erik try to wrap up their trip to Ecuador in a (semi) timely fashion. They take you east past Quito to the eastern slope of the Andes, deep into the Amazon Basin jungles, and finish up at the paramo just outside of Quito. In just about 2 weeks in Ecuador, they saw over 400-lifer bird species and had some incredible experiences that provides them a lifetime of stories to tell.
