The Anxious Achiever: Kevin Love on Trying to Achieve His Way Out of Depression Dec 09, 2020
    Show notes

Published on 16 Nov 2020. NBA star Kevin Love has reached incredible success in the NBA. But his drive to move ahead also masked depression and anxiety, which he’s struggled with for much of his life. For a long time, he hid his battle with mental health because he was worried that his fans would see him as “weak.” But after a very public panic attack in 2017, Love started speaking out about his mental health. Love talks with host Morra Aarons-Mele about role modeling openness about mental health, how he manages his social anxiety as a celebrity, and why basketball both aggravates and relieves his depression. Further Reading: “To Anybody Going Through It” (The Player’s Tribune, 2020) “Kevin Love details his battles with mental illness” (ESPN, 2018) “Kevin Love on How to Find the Right Therapist, and What to Do If You Can’t Afford One” (GQ, 2019)

Invest Like the Best: Matt Ball - The Future of Media: Movies, the Metaverse, and More - [Invest Like the Best, EP.185] Dec 03, 2020
    Show notes

Published on 04 Aug 2020. My guest today, Matthew Ball, is a long time coming. He’s the former head of strategy at Amazon Studios, an investor, and probably my favorite business essayist writing today. In fact, I can’t think of another author whose work I read as quickly once a new essay drops. Read his latest on the past and future of Nintendo and you’ll see why. Our conversation is all about the past and future of media. We discuss movies, music, television, video games, and the metaverse. When I re-listened to this episode I couldn’t believe how much information was in Matthew's head and how easily he covered so many topics in depth. Please enjoy this great conversation. Hi-Phi Nation: Criminal Minds Dec 03, 2020
    Show notes

Published on 02 May 2020. One place where law and morality are supposed to agree is that there should be no crime without a criminal mind, what is called “mens rea” in criminal law. But there have been a proliferation of crimes that do not require knowledge or intent, contributing to over-prosecution and overincarceration. Conservative and libertarian lawmakers have claimed the moral high ground over progressives in advocating that people who do not intend and do not know they are breaking a law be excused for their criminal conduct. Is this correct, or is it just a cover to make white-collar crimes harder to prosecute? Today we look at the battle over mens rea reform in the criminal justice system, the moral theory underlying the idea that being culpable for wrongdoing requires an objectionable state of mind, and why it is that human beings care so much more about mindset than they do about conduct.Guest voices this week: Michael Chase, Benjamin Levin, Gideon Yaffe, State Senator Todd Kaminsky, John Guidry, and Sarah LustbaderJoin the invite-only Zoom events after every episode this season, visit hiphination.org to find out how.The episode is brought to you by the Getting Ethics to Work podcast, from the Prindle Institute for Ethics at Depauw UniversityBecome a Slate Plus member at slate.com/hiphiplus to get a bonus episode every week this season, and to support Slate during this difficult period. TED Talks Daily: A blueprint for reparations in the US | William "Sandy" Darity Dec 03, 2020
    Show notes

Published on 14 Jul 2020. With clarity and insight, economist and author William "Sandy" Darity discusses how the grievous injustice of slavery in the US led to the immense wealth gap that currently exists between Black and white Americans. He explains how reparations for descendants of enslaved people would work -- and why it's necessary that the US engage in this act of compensation and redemption to make progress towards true equality. (This virtual conversation, hosted by TED's current affairs curator Whitney Pennington Rodgers, was recorded June 30, 2020.)
