    Ham Radio 360: WA7NB DX-pedition…Planning, Operations, Fun! Aug 26, 2014
    Show notes

A DX-pedition is an expedition to what is considered an exotic place by amateur radio operators, perhaps because of its remoteness, access restrictions or simply because there are very few radio amateurs active from that place. This could be an island, a country, or even a particular spot on a geographical grid. DX is a telegraphic shorthand for “distance” or “distant”. ….linked from Wikipedia

In the newest episode of the Fo Time Podcast, we’re joined by Art Blank, WA7NB from Arizona. Art has been participating in DX-peditions since 1995 and the discussion revolves around planning and funding a DX-pedition along with logistics and operations. Art’s latest involvement was with the Juan Fernandez Island DX-pedition in 2013. If you are interested in exploring this end of the Ham Radio hobby, this episode is for you.

    Ham Radio 360: Field Day-Solar, Battery & More Jun 17, 2014
    Show notes

    Field Day 2014!

In Episode 2 of the Fo Time Podcast, sponsored by MTC Radio, Jeremy KF7IJZ joins us to discuss the upcoming Field Day, Solar/Battery Options for Ham Radio Operators, and more. Jeremy is an active member of his local Amateur Radio Community and has a considerable online following due to his Solar/Battery product review videos and commentary.

    Field Day

Field Day is an annual event held on the fourth full weekend of June, where Amateur Radio Operators across North America come together to practice their emergency communication skills. Field Day is an opportunity for ham radio operators to work with other operators and to test their equipment and operating skills in a simulated emergency environment. Jeremy and I discuss the upcoming Field Day and the different ways in which ham radio operators can participate.

    Solar/Battery Options

Having a reliable power source is essential for Amateur Radio Operators, especially during emergencies when conventional power sources may be unavailable. Jeremy and I discuss different solar and battery options that ham radio operators can use to power their radios and other equipment. We also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different power sources and share our personal experiences with various options.

    Why People Choose Amateur Radio

In addition to discussing Field Day and Solar/Battery Options, we also hear from two Amateur Radio Operators about why they became involved in the hobby. Amateur Radio is a diverse and vibrant community, and people come to the hobby for a variety of reasons. Some are drawn to the technical aspects of the hobby, while others are interested in the social and community-building aspects of the hobby.

    Conclusion

The upcoming Field Day is a great opportunity for those interested in Amateur Radio to learn more about the hobby and get involved. Many local clubs provide a GOTA (Get On The Air) station for unlicensed individuals to operate with guidance and experience the “Magic of Radio.” In addition, having a reliable power source is crucial for Amateur Radio Operators, and there are various Solar/Battery options available to meet their needs. Whether you’re interested in the technical aspects of the hobby or the community-building aspects, Amateur Radio offers something for everyone.

Ham Radio 360: ARES responds to the Joplin Tornado-a look back with AC0HA Jun 17, 2014
    Show notes

In times of natural disasters, communication is crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of affected individuals. Amateur radio operators or “hams” play a vital role in disaster response, providing essential communication support when other means of communication fail. In this episode of Premiere Fo Time Podcast, we talk with Cecil Higgins, AC0HA, who was the “Ham In Charge” during the ARES response to the Joplin MO Tornado Disaster in 2011.

    The Importance of Disaster Response

When a natural disaster strikes, communication systems such as telephone lines, cell towers, and internet connectivity can easily become unavailable or overloaded, hampering emergency response efforts. Amateur radio operators, who are trained in emergency communication protocols and equipment, provide reliable and flexible communication support during disasters, ensuring that emergency services can communicate with each other and coordinate their efforts.

The Role of Amateur Radio Operators in Disasters

Amateur radio operators can take on many roles during a disaster response, including providing communication support for emergency services, assisting in the search and rescue of survivors, and coordinating relief efforts. During the Joplin MO Tornado Disaster, Cecil and his team of amateur radio operators provided communication support for the ARES response team, ensuring that emergency services could communicate with each other and respond effectively to the disaster.

    Equipment that Worked Best

During disasters, communication equipment needs to be durable, reliable, and easy to set up and use. Cecil and his team found that portable radios with long-lasting batteries and antennas worked best in the field. They also used repeater systems, which allowed for extended communication range and provided better coverage in areas with weak signals.

Lessons Learned from the Joplin MO Tornado Disaster

Cecil and his team learned several valuable lessons during the Joplin MO Tornado Disaster, including the importance of having a backup power source, establishing communication protocols before a disaster strikes, and working closely with emergency services to ensure effective communication. These lessons can help other amateur radio operators prepare for future disasters and ensure that they are ready to respond when needed.

    Conclusion

The recent Twin-Tornado that devastated the small Nebraskan town of Pilger serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of disaster preparedness and the critical role that amateur radio operators play in disaster response. Amateur radio operators like Cecil and his team provide an essential service during disasters, ensuring that communication lines remain open and that emergency services can respond quickly and effectively. Let us continue to pray for those affected by the recent disaster and support the courageous individuals who are always ready to respond in times of crisis.

Upcoming in Episode 2: KF7IJZ and I discuss Field Day, Solar/ Battery, and a great deal more!
