    Latest Episodes:
Tyrone Davis Jr. Will Never Miss A March Jun 05, 2020
    Show notes

The generous Tyrone Davis Jr talks with us this week. Tyrone takes a second to talk us through his experience protesting over the weekend. He's a remarkable, lifelong activist and the last thing in the world he needed to do was talk with us.

We were not going to have a episode this week in solidarity with George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and the countless lives lost to police violence, but we were honored that Tyrone was willing to chat with us and we thought giving our platform to his voice was important. He and Dan did Waitress together on Broadway and it has been inspiring to see the Waitress family come together around Tyrone.

As Tyrone mentions in the episode, please consider supporting the National Lawyers Guild, which provides legal support for people who are protesting and Free Them All For Public Health which provides medical help and support to protestors who are arrested.

If you're looking for more information, here are some resources we found helpful. The 1619 Project via the New Times provides a remarkable, comprehensive look at the history of racial inequality in this country. Code Switch and Left Right Center are also excellent resources for having the hard conversations with people who disagree. Also check out the book White Fragility... open your mind, change your perspective. Stand up for Black Lives. Donate for Black Lives. Protect Black Lives. All of us here at Guys Who Like Musicals unequivocally believe that Black Lives Matter.

Ashley Park: Hey Old Friend, Here's To Us May 29, 2020
    Show notes

Mean Girls, Sunday in the Park with George, The King and I...We met at 18, and now one of us is a TV star, a Tony Nominee, and has Tina Fey's cell phone number. ASHLEY PARK IS HERE!! We love this girl and we're so grateful she took an afternoon to talk to us. Ashley is currently (well ... in lockdown like all of us) but she was working on the Paramount TV series Emily in Paris and slated to star in Thoroughly Modern Millie at City Center when the world shut down. She shot the Netflix reboot of Tales of the City while finishing her run in Mean Girls. If THAT is not an actor's dream, I don't know what is. We talk about how she showed up in a fabulous hat to Joe's wedding (a hat that later found its way into Emily in Paris), where she found her "funny", and she calls out Dan on their... history. Here's to us, who's like us, damn few.

Izzy McCalla: There is Room For All of Us May 22, 2020
    Show notes

She's Jasmine, she's Alyssa, she's the dance captain of the 2012 University of Michigan production of Chicago where Dan and Joe wore mesh shirts and pretended they were Fosse dancers. LOOK IT UP. Actually ... please don't. Izzy has been seen in Aladdin on tour and on Broadway and is best known for her portrayal as Alyssa in THE PROM on Broadway. She was working on the out of town tryout of Jeffery Seller's FLY at the La Jolla Playhouse when the pandemic hit. We are SO STOKED for this one. FLY is a new iteration of the classic Peter Pan story where Wendy – a girl seduced by the mysteries of Neverland, and struggling with her own impending womanhood – is the focus of this singular version of the Peter Pan story that combines stunning choreography and an exhilarating, percussive score. We chat this week with Izzy about how the work never stops (take those voice lessons people), how we limit ourselves, and, our favorite, "you can't move forward if you're looking side to side." WE LOVE YOU IZZY.

"House lights to half" Stage Manager, Matt Lutz (FROZEN) May 15, 2020
    Show notes

This is horrible timing, but we just found out this afternoon that Frozen will no longer be a Broadway show. We talked to Matt last week before we knew any of this and had a wonderful conversation about life as a stage manager. We have had many of you asking for more insights into the world of stage management and we're sorry it took so long. Matt and Joe worked together on Frozen for Joe's entire run and Matt is the best... he's a terrible golfer though. JUST KIDDING. Matt has been Broadway stage manager for 7 years. He's worked Frozen and Aladdin on Broadway as well as the public theatre, signature theatre and several other off broadway theatres & regional theatres. Also freelancer on corporate and special shows/events. We chat about life in the theater, the jump from regional to Broadway, and the rush you get when you utter the word ... GO.

Andrew Kober is Blue Collar Broadway May 01, 2020
    Show notes

Hows this for a resume? Sunday in the Park with George, Beautiful, She Loves Me, Les Mis, School of Rock, and a little tribal musical called Hair. Andrew Kober has carved a career for himself in shows every theater kid would kill for. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon and quickly established himself as one of Broadway’s most reliable, most inventive actors. Alex Finke guest stars this week (YES!!) We talk about carving a lane for yourself, not being an asshole, and how, sometimes, the audition is the best part. Also.. if you haven’t seen the Asher and Daddy show ... it’s an absolute MUST on Andrew’s Instagram.

    Show notes

COREY COTT IS HERE AND IT'S BANDSTAND WEEK!!! If you haven't already heard.. the Bandstand film will stream on Playbill.com all weekend. Check it out! A portion of the proceeds are being donated to The Actor's Fund. A little light in the darkness or all of us. This week we sit down with Corey Cott. Corey has been seen on Broadway in FREAKING NEWSIES and Gigi. He's currently starring in his first series regular role in Fox's Filthy Rich which will premier later this year. Rachel Sussman is a RAD Woman Apr 03, 2020
    Show notes

We are so excited to have our first Producer on Guys Who Like Musicals. Joe met Rachel working on The Woodsman at New World Stages back in 2015. (If you can't tell by how many times Joe geeks out about it over the course of this hour). The Woodsman is currently on BroadwayHD!! Rachel is a highly acclaimed producer and creator. She is a TONY AWARD NOMINATED Producer for the Pulitzer Prize finalist, What The Constitution Means to Me. She started the The Mitten Project, a creative incubator in Northern Michigan for writers starting their careers in the theater. She is currently producing a million things, but the main course in her world is a musical based on the the Suffragist movement. You will remember where you were the first time you heard about this project. We're obsessed with her and we know you will be too.

This week we are sending all the prayers and love to Nick Cordero. The original Earl in Waitress and the veteran Broadway performer is fighting COVID-19 like mad. Stay healthy. Stay safe. Be kind.
