Peter Sagal: How to Be Funnier Than Shit Nov 02, 2022

This week's guest is the remarkably witty, acerbic, and insightful Peter Sagal. He is the host of one of my favorite shows, Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! He is to wit what Mount Chimborazo is to mountains. If you've never heard of Mount Chimborazo, it's time for you to fire up Google to learn why it trumps Mount Everest as far as mountain metaphors go. Appearing on Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! was on my bucket list. I reached that pinnacle of personal success in 2013 when I played “Not My Job” on Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! LISTEN TO THE EPISODE HERE Like many remarkable people, Peter has worn a multitude of hats: playwright, screenwriter, marathoner, Jeopardy contestant, podcaster, documentary host, foreign correspondent, and magician's assistant. Peter hosted CONSTITUTION USA with Peter Sagal for PBS and the National Geographic Channel. Essentially, this was about a bald Jewish guy riding around the Midwest on a Harley. He studied English literature at Harvard and is the author of The Book of Vice: Naughty Things (and How to Do Them) and The Incomplete Book of Running. In this episode, we cover what it's like to be the target of Fox, Bill O'Reilly, and an evangelical megachurch pastor, the reason why it works to make fun of Bill Clinton's sexual peccadillos but not Donald Trump's, the flawed assumption that renders the US Constitution impotent these days, and why it's a good thing for Peter that I didn't die on August 17, 2022. I know you will enjoy this episode with the one and only Peter Sagal.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: Astrophysicist, Planetary Scientist, and Author Apr 20, 2022

For decades, Neil deGrasse Tyson has shared his knowledge and his wonder about the depths of the universe, helping millions grasp what they see when they look up at the sky.

Neil is director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. It turns out that Neil was born in New York City the same week NASA was founded. His interest in the universe traces back to age 9, after a first visit to the exact planetarium he is now the director for… the cosmos aligned that day.

In addition to being an astrophysicist, Neil is also a teacher, actor, philosopher, cosmologist, science writer, and television editor.

I dare say that this may be the least astrophysic-y interview he’s ever done. We delve into topics such as:

    • How he picked which college to attend
    • The naming of his daughter
    • What his family discusses at the dinner table
    • What he would do if he were dean of admissions of Harvard
    • How flight attendants assume he’s not in first-class because he’s black
    • The limitations of the bible as a reference source
    • Why he doesn’t mind how Mark Zuckerberg uses the term “metaverse”
In other words, this is truly a remarkable interview with a truly remarkable person.

By the way, a few hours before the interview I got a shot (two if you count the anesthesia) because of sudden hearing loss in my left ear. I’ve been deaf in the right ear for years.
But the show must go on. If Beethoven can compose deaf, I can podcast deaf.

Enjoy this interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson!

Mark is fundamentally a philosopher with valuable thoughts about how to manage your life. Some of the topics we cover include: Why you should look for sh@t sandwiches How people can give a f*ck about only two to four things How actions create passion, not vice versa He writes life advice that is science-based, pragmatic, and non-bullshitty - a.k.a., life advice that doesn’t suck.

Michael Sinyard: Founder of Specialized Bicycle Components Dec 16, 2020

He knew he could build a viable bicycle for less than custom bikes cost, and thus the Specialized Stumpjumper was born in 1981. Sinyard was inducted to the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1988. Tim Kendall: Former Facebook Exec, Former President of Pinterest, and Former Wrestler Nov 25, 2020

This episode’s guest is Tim Kendall. In my humble opinion, Tim’s greatest claim to fame is probably that he was an intern who worked for me. That said, since then, Tim has held somewhat important positions at other companies you may have heard of such as Facebook and Pinterest. And he was much more than an intern at both. He is the person who created Facebook’s monetization strategy as the director of monetization. This was way before the current monetization strategy of enabling foreign governments to influence American elections. He was head of product and then president of Pinterest where he made the company “focus.” Lately, he has appeared in the film The Social Dilemma--which you should watch on Netflix if you are concerned about the future of the world, your kids included. He is currently the president of Moment, a company that fosters physical, emotional, and social health by improving people’s relationships with their phones. He is one of the most qualified people in the world to analyze addiction to social media. He has an undergraduate and MBA degree from Stanford. As an undergraduate, he was on the wrestling team. For those of you that don’t know much about collegiate wrestling, let’s just say that it attracts people who are extremely gritty, intelligent, and dedicated. In this sport, there are few externalities or outside factors to blame. It’s you versus your opponent on a mat. And wrestlers know that there’s no lucrative MLB, NFL, NBA contract at the end of the contract but nevertheless they persist. In other words, wrestlers are the kind of people you’d want on your side. Dr. Vivek Murthy: Author and doctor. 19th Surgeon General of the United States Nov 02, 2020

This episode’s remarkable guest is Dr. Vivek Murthy, the former Surgeon General of the United States in the Obama administration. On Monday, November 9th, President Elect Joe Biden announced the leadership of his coronavirus task force — the first public step in what aides say will be a focus on confronting the pandemic that has claimed almost a quarter of a million American lives. It will be led by Dr. Vivek Murthy, a surgeon general under former President Barack Obama, who has been a key Biden adviser for months and is expected to take a major public role. He has an undergraduate degree from Harvard, an MD from Yale, and an MBA from Yale. His residency was at Harvard Medical School. He started Doctors for America, group of 15,000 doctors and medical students supporting high-quality affordable care. He also started a company called TrialNetworks to increase the efficiency of clinical trials. President Barack Obama appointed him Surgeon General in 2013. While in this position, he issued the first surgeon general’s report on alcohol, drugs, and health and the first Surgeon General’s report on the use of e-cigarettes by young people. He also launched the “Turn the Tide” campaign to address opioid addiction. April 2017 Donald Trump fired Vivek, which I would assert is a badge of honor. At that point Vivek started addressing the medical impact of loneliness and published a book called Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World.
