Think of it as training with Dopamine rather than training with rewards
Dogs are selfish and thats a good thing!

"I wish the dog could understand what I'm saying!" A very relatable request or wish that any dog trainer has probably uttered at some point or another. The truth is though, with the proper approach and consistency, you can get the dog to at least understand "yes" or "no" which does allows you to communicate more effectively with your dog.

Jared Warren of Southern State K9 joins us in a two part discussion on building and utilizing markers. You cant discuss markers without at least working level of understanding when it comes to reward structures as well.

What is a "marker"
The types of markers: reward, duration, terminal, indirect reward, negative
You're actually using markers whether intending to do so or not
Dog training isn't just one way ~ "There are 9 million ways to Rome"
Sometimes the best option is to go backwards and reset
Charging the marker
"Free shaping" vs "luring"
Luring = "mechanical shaping"
Mark and....release, keep going, reward
The hope of reward has to outweigh the struggle of behavior

Whether you're a DIY trainer, a professional, or a dog owner who hires a trainer, one truth remains: every dog is unique and won't follow the same path. However, the pressure often mounts once a date is set on the calendar. Ben shares his insights on why patience isn't just a virtue in dog training—it's a requirement. Tune in to learn how to stay calm and focused on the individual needs of your dog, regardless of the timeline.

It's important to have goals. Just not at the expense of the dog.
Is there more concern over impatience at the entry level or the advanced level of testing?
Teach developing skills rather than passing a test
Focus on the relationship and handling skills

271. Conformation Shows ~ What are they and why do they matter? Jul 02, 2024

AKC conformation judge, Lonnie Carrol of Bear Hug Griffons, joins us to cover everything in the show dog world. Very often we hear the phrase "function over form" and Lonnie explains why it shouldn't be an either/or situation and we should be striving for both form AND function.

What are conformation shows?
The different classes and what it takes to earn championships
Compete in 'classes' then move into the 'groups' before entering the 'best in show'
Dogs are judged against a breed standard. Then the dogs compete as to who best meets the standard.
The dog's 'structure' determines how they move more than external factors
Where do the breed standards come from?
The requirements of becoming a judge and keeping up with all of the breed standards
The 12,5,4 Rule (12 years, 5 litters bred, and 4 champions out of those litters)
Balancing the looks with the purpose of the breed
Sometimes a breed is so pretty its detrimental
If there is a way to put a title on a dog then people will do it
The dog behavior needed in the show ring
The politics of the show ring environment
